We bring you last week's top performances from Jamaicans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Samardo Samuels

   #1. This week's number one is an international power forward Samardo Samuels (206-89, college: Louisville, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Cleveland Cavaliers (2-6) in their last game. Despite Samuels' good performance the Cleveland Cavaliers lost 96-106 on the road to the Golden State Warriors. He scored 11 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 38 minutes on the court. It was Cavaliers' fourth consecutive loss in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Samuels averages: 4.5ppg, 2.8rpg, 2FGP: 44.0% and FT: 62.5% in the six games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Jamaican senior national team.

Roy Hibbert

   #2. Second place goes to former international center Roy Hibbert (218-86, college: Georgetown, currently plays in NBA). Hibbert contributed to an Indiana Pacers' victory against the Washington Wizards (0-7) 89-85 in the NBA last Saturday. He scored 7 points, had 12 rebounds and made 2 blocks. The Indiana Pacers have rather weak 3-6 record this season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. It's Hibbert's fifth year with the team. Hibbert is currently fifth on the league's list of best blockers. He has very reliable stats this season: 8.2ppg, 7.9rpg, 1.3apg, 2.4bpg, 2FGP: 38.6%. Hibbert is a naturalized American. He played for the Jamaican national team in 2010.

   #3. The Jamaican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward Patrick Ewing Jr. (203-84, college: Georgetown, currently plays in Germany). Ewing Jr. led Telekom Baskets to a victory against the league leader ratiopharm Ulm (7-2) 107-103 in the German BBL on Saturday night. He scored 15 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 24 minutes. Telekom Baskets Bonn (4-3) is placed ninth in the BBL. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. It's Ewing Jr.'s first year with the team. Ewing Jr. has relatively good stats this season: 11.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.6apg, 2FGP: 54.9%, 3FGP: 6.7% and FT: 91.7%(22-24) in the seven games. He is a naturalized American. Ewing Jr. is also a member of the Jamaican senior national team.

   #4. Guard Oritseweyinmi Efejuku (196-86, college: Providence, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) was not able to help Fuerza Regia (11-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Fuerza Regia was defeated 101-96 in Mexicali by the second-ranked Soles. Efejuku was the top scorer with 31 points. He also added 5 rebounds and 4 assists (made all of his seven free throws). It's Efejuku's first season with the team. Efejuku has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 19.2ppg, 4.2rpg and 3.0apg. Efejuku has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and Jamaican. He is also Jamaican national team player.

Akeem Scott

   #5. International point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point, currently plays in Mexico) was the major contributor in Pioneros' victory against the closely-ranked Toros (17-5) 81-79 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Saturday night's game. He recorded 14 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in 27 minutes. Pioneros de Quintana Roo-Cancun (11-11) is placed fifth in the LNBP. This year Scott has relatively solid stats: 14.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.4apg and 1.6spg in the 20 games. He is a naturalized American. Worth to mention Scott played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Scott plays currently for the Jamaican national team.

Kevin Young

   #6. Center Kevin Young (206-84, college: Missouri, currently plays in Japan) contributed to an Aishin Sea Horses' victory against the closely-ranked Panasonic Trians (8-4) 84-80 in the Japanese JBL last Sunday. Young scored 9 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Aishin Sea Horses (9-3) are placed second in the JBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Young is ranked third on the list of the best blockers in the league. His overall stats this season are: 8.2ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.1bpg. Young is a former international player as he played for the Jamaican senior team six years ago.

   #7. International power forward Ryan Reid (203-86, college: Florida St., currently plays in France) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked JSF Nanterre (3-3) crushing them 94-64 in the French ProA in Saturday night's game. Reid scored 8 points. Chorale de Roanne Basket (2-4) is placed 14th in the ProA. Reid's overall stats this season are: 5.0ppg and 4.3rpg. He is a naturalized American. Reid used to play for the Jamaican national team last year.

   #8. Forward Ronald Yates (201-83, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Switzerland) managed to help Benetton Fribourg Olympic in a victory against the seventh-ranked BBC Nyon (2-4) crushing them 92-64 in the Swiss LNA last Saturday. He scored only 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 14 minutes. Benetton Fribourg Olympic (5-1) is placed second in the LNA. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. This year Yates' overall stats are: 9.0ppg, 4.7rpg, 2.8apg and 1.2spg in the six games. He is a naturalized American. Yates used to play for the Jamaican national team back in 2010.

   #9. International forward Vashil Fernandez (208-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the Georgia Southern University crushing them 85-54 in the NCAA on Friday night. He recorded 5 points. The Valparaiso University has conference record this season. Fernandez's total stats this year are: 9.0ppg, 4.7rpg, 2.8apg and 1.2spg. He is a naturalized American. Fernandez is also in the roster of the Jamaican national team.

   #10. Forward Courtney Walters (208-87, college: Northwood, FL, currently plays in Switzerland) faced previously mentioned Ronald Yates in the Swiss LNA last game. Walters was not able to secure a victory for BBC Nyon (2-4) in their game against Fribourg (5-2). He scored 9 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 30 minutes. But BBC Nyon was crushed 92-64 at home by the higher-ranked (#3) Fribourg. This year Walters' total stats are: 6.8ppg and 8.0rpg in the six games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Jamaican National Team roster.


The list of other players, who all have Jamaican passport but never been selected to any of Jamaican national teams:

   #1. Adrian Uter (200-F/C-84, agency: Gross Zeev ISA, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Israel), who plays in the Israeli Winner League could not help Maccabi Rishon (3-2) to beat GreenTops Netanya (5-0). Uter scored 9 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and made 3 blocks in 38 minutes. But Maccabi Rishon lost 62-70 on the road to the leading GreenTops Netanya. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Uter is currently second on the league's list of best rebounders and also on the list of best blockers (first place). He has individually a very good year with high stats. Uter averages: 15.4ppg, 11.0rpg, 1.4apg, 2.6bpg and 1.4spg in the five games he played so far. He is a naturalized American.

   #2. Sherman Gay (201-PF-82, college: Loyola Mary, currently plays in France), who plays in the French ProB (second division) was not able to help Le Portel (6-3) in their last game on Friday. Despite Gay's very good performance Le Portel was defeated 89-85 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Pau-Lacq-Orthez. He was the top scorer with 26 points. Gay also added 8 rebounds and made 4 blocks. Gay is currently second on the league's list of best blockers. This season he has very high stats. Gay averages: 16.8ppg, 6.8rpg and 1.9bpg. He is a naturalized American.

   #3. Corey Muirhead (197-F-83, college: W.Carolina, currently plays in Czech Republic) was the major contributor in a BK Pardubice's victory against the closely-ranked USK Praha (6-4) 89-76 in the Czech Republic NBL last Saturday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 10 rebounds. Muirhead also added 7 assists. BK JIP Pardubice (5-4) is placed sixth in the NBL. Muirhead belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #3. This season he has very good stats: 12.5ppg, 9.3rpg, 3.0apg and 1.3spg. Muirhead has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Jamaican.

   #4. Jermaine Bucknor (199-F-83, college: Richmond, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German BBL was not able to secure a victory for TBB Trier (4-3) in their last game. Despite his good performance TBB Trier lost 66-72 in Muenchen to the higher-ranked (#4) Bayern. Bucknor was the second best scorer with 14 points in 30 minutes. This year Bucknor's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.1apg in the seven games. He is another player who holds two passports: Jamaican and Canadian.

   #5. Geoff McDermott (203-F-87, agency: Interperformances, college: Providence, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Palencia Baloncesto (4-2) in their game against CB Clavijo (3-3) in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division). Despite his very good performance in Friday night's game McDermott recorded a double-double by scoring 17 points and getting 10 rebounds. McDermott has reliable stats this season: 10.5ppg, 6.2rpg, 1.5apg and 1.7spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #6. Experienced Corey Williams (191-G-77, college: Alabama St., currently plays in Lebanon) couldn't help Bejjeh in their game against Antranik in the Lebanese Division A, despite his very good performance last Thursday. Williams was the top scorer with 26 points. He also added 5 boards, dished 5 assists and stole 4 balls in 39 minutes. But his team lost 83-90. Williams is currently third on the list of most steals with 3.5spg. This year he also averages: 22.0ppg, 5.0rpg and 4.0apg in the two games. Williams is a naturalized American.

   #7. Bryan Bailey (185-PG-80, college: Bucknell, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help BBC Bayreuth in their game against EWE Baskets in the German BBL. He was the second best scorer with 9 points. His team was crushed by 21 points 71-50. Bailey is ranked sixth on the list of the best passers in the league. This season he has very good stats: 12.6ppg, 3.3rpg and 3.7apg. Bailey is a naturalized American.

   #8. Sebastian Douglas (193-G-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Cleveland St. to an overtime victory against the Bowling Green State University 79-73 in the NCAA in Monday night's game. He recorded 16 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 40 minutes. Douglas has reliable stats this year: 12.6ppg, 3.3rpg and 3.7apg in the seven games. He is a naturalized American.

   #9. Hugh Robinson (202-C-83, currently plays in Sweden) couldn't help Brahe Basket in their game against Malbas in the Swedish Basketettan (second division), despite his very good performance on Sunday night. He was the second best scorer with 18 points. Robinson also added 8 rebounds and 2 blocks in 33 minutes. But his team lost 74-80. Robinson is currently first on the league's list of best blockers with 2.9bpg. This year his other stats are: 14.4ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.1spg in the seven games.

   #10. Alwayne Bigby (196-G/F-90, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Rhode Island in their game against the Virginia Tech in the NCAA. Bigby recorded only 4 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. His team was badly defeated by 19 points 69-50. Bigby has averaged so far 6.8ppg and 8.0rpg. He has both Jamaican and Canadian nationalities.
  



JDF continue march through Southern basketball league - May 6, 2016

The Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) continued to surprise in the Southern Basketball Conference (SBC) League, scoring their fourth straight win after beating former champions Majesty Gardens, 83-70, on Monday at the Tony Spaulding Complex. Ramyi Franklyn produced 16 points and 10 rebounds with good support from Dermaine Foster, 13 points. Bayamon adds Scott to their roster - May 5, 2016

Vaqueros de Bayamon (BSN) added to their roster 26-year old Jamaican ex-international swingman Durand Scott (196-92kg-90, college: Miami, FL). He is a dual citizen owning also American passport. Scott moved there from Enel Brindisi in Italian Serie A where he started the season. In 26 games he recorded 13.3ppg, 4.8rpg, 1.5apg and 1.1spg this season. The last season he played at Hapoel Tel-Aviv (Winner League) in Israel. In 31 games he averaged impressive 15.2ppg, 4.5rpg, 2.2apg and 1.5spg.    [read more]

Vichy Clermont inks Sherman Gay - Apr 19, 2016

Jean D'Arc Vichy Clermont Metropole (ProB) signed 34-year old American (has also Jamaican passport) power forward Sherman Gay (201-82, college: Loyola Mary). He started the season at Salon Vilpas in Finnish Korisliiga. In 16 games he had very impressive stats: 15.6ppg, 6.1rpg, 1.1spg and 1.0bpg this season. The last season Gay played at Saint-Quentin.
