Roy Hibbert's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Jamaicans playing currently abroad - Nov 29, 2012

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Jamaican players, who play currently abroad.


Roy Hibbert

   #1. This week's number one is former international center Roy Hibbert (218-86, college: Georgetown, currently plays in NBA). He contributed to an overtime Indiana Pacers' victory against the New Orleans Hornets (4-10) 115-107 in the NBA in Wednesday night's game. Hibbert had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 11 blocks in 36 minutes on the court. The Indiana Pacers have 7-8 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. It's Hibbert's fifth year with the team. Hibbert is ranked second on the list of the best blockers in the league with 3.1bpg. He also averaged so far 9.5ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.4apg, 2FGP: 38.8% and FT: 52.9% in the 15 games he played so far. Hibbert is a naturalized American. He played for the Jamaican senior national team two years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division). He could not help Pioneros (11-11) in their last game. Despite Scott's very good performance Pioneros lost 76-85 on the road to the lower-ranked (#5) Panteras. He was the top scorer with 17 points. Scott also added 4 rebounds and dished 6 assists in 23 minutes. It's Scott's first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 13.8ppg, 3.1rpg, 3.3apg, 1.4spg, 2FGP: 57.1%(109-191), 3FGP: 35.6% and FT: 76.2% in the 24 games. Scott is a naturalized American. Worth to mention Scott played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He is in the roster of the Jamaican senior national team.

Samardo Samuels

   #3. The Jamaican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international power forward Samardo Samuels (206-89, college: Louisville, currently plays in NBA). He was not able to help the Cleveland Cavaliers (3-12) in their game against the Memphis Grizzlies (11-2) in the NBA. Samuels scored 8 points in only 13 minutes. The Cleveland Cavaliers lost 78-84 in Memphis to the Grizzlies. It was Cavaliers' fourth consecutive loss in a row. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Samuels averages: 4.0ppg, 2.1rpg, 2FGP: 41.2% and FT: 57.1% in the nine games. He is also a member of the Jamaican senior national team.

   #4. Forward Patrick Ewing Jr. (203-84, college: Georgetown, currently plays in EuroChallenge), who plays in Germany was not able to secure a victory for Telekom Baskets (3-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Ewing Jr.'s very good performance the first-placed Telekom Baskets was defeated 82-78 at home by the lower-ranked Antwerp Giants (#3) in the group H of EuroChallenge. He was the second best scorer with 17 points (made all of his five free throws). There are only two games left until the end of the EuroChallenge Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Ewing Jr.'s overall stats this season are: 9.5ppg, 5.5rpg and 2.0apg. He is a naturalized American. Ewing Jr. is also Jamaican national team player.

   #5. International guard Oritseweyinmi Efejuku (196-86, college: Providence, currently plays in Mexico) led Fuerza Regia to a victory over the third-ranked Halcones Rojos (20-6) 84-75 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. Efejuku was MVP of the game. He recorded 17 points in 30 minutes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (15-11) is placed seventh in the LNBP. Efejuku has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 17.9ppg, 3.7rpg and 3.4apg in the 18 games. Efejuku has a dual citizenship: Nigerian and Jamaican. He plays currently for the Jamaican national team.

   #6. Center Kevin Young (206-84, college: Missouri, currently plays in Japan) contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Levanga Hokkaido (1-15) crushing them 83-63 in the Japanese JBL in Saturday night's game. Young scored 11 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 22 minutes. Aishin Sea Horses (13-3) are placed second in the JBL. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. Young is currently fourth on the list of best blockers with 1.0bpg. He also averaged so far 9.1ppg and 7.6rpg in the 16 games. Young is a former international player as he played for the Jamaican senior team six years ago.

   #7. Former international forward Ronald Yates (201-83, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Switzerland) contributed to an overtime Fribourg's victory against the fifth-ranked Lugano Tigers (4-4) 78-71 in the Swiss LNA last Saturday. He scored 11 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Benetton Fribourg Olympic (7-1) is placed first in the LNA. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. This season Yates has relatively solid stats: 10.6ppg, 4.5rpg and 2.8apg. He is a naturalized American. Yates used to play for the Jamaican national team two years ago.

   #8. Power forward Ryan Reid (203-86, college: Florida St., currently plays in France) couldn't help Chorale de Roanne (3-5) in their game against Limoges CSP Elite (0-8) in the French ProA. He scored 9 points in 19 minutes. But Chorale de Roanne lost 67-71 in Limoges to the higher-ranked (#13) CSP Elite. This year Reid's overall stats are: 5.4ppg and 3.8rpg in the eight games. He is a naturalized American. Reid used to play for the Jamaican national team last year.

   #9. International forward Courtney Walters (208-87, college: Northwood, FL, currently plays in Switzerland) couldn't help BBC Nyon (2-6) in their game against Geneve Lions (6-2) in the Swiss LNA. He scored only 4 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. BBC Nyon was badly defeated 86-66 in Geneve by the second-ranked Lions. It was BBC Nyon's third consecutive loss in a row. Walters is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league. His total stats this season are: 6.1ppg and 8.0rpg. Walters is also in the roster of the Jamaican national team.

Forward Vashil Fernandez (208-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help Valparaiso University in a victory against the Chicago State University crushing them 67-46 in the NCAA on Friday night. He scored only 2 points in 13 minutes. The Valparaiso University has conference record this season. This year Fernandez's total stats are: 6.1ppg and 8.0rpg in the eight games. He is a naturalized American. Fernandez is an international player who is currently on the senior Jamaican National Team roster.

   #1. Adrian Uter (200-F/C-84, agency: Gross Zeev ISA, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Israel) was the major contributor in a Maccabi Rishon's victory against the ninth-ranked Bnei Hasharon (2-4) 91-76 in the Israeli Winner League last Monday. Uter recorded 18 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Maccabi Rishon Le-Zion (4-2) is placed fifth in the Winner League. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Uter is currently ninth on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (fourth place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Uter averages: 15.8ppg, 10.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2.2bpg and 1.2spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #2. Corey Muirhead (197-F-83, college: W.Carolina, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL could not help BK Pardubice (6-5) in their last game on Friday. Despite Muirhead's very good performance BK Pardubice was defeated 84-80 at home by the second-ranked NH Ostrava. He was the top scorer with 24 points. Muirhead also added 5 rebounds. Muirhead is currently third on the list of best rebounders. He has very reliable stats this season: 13.9ppg, 8.8rpg, 2.9apg and 1.2spg. Muirhead has a dual citizenship: Canadian and Jamaican.

   #3. Jermaine Bucknor (199-F-83, college: Richmond, currently plays in Germany) led TBB Trier to a victory against the 13th-ranked s Oliver Baskets (4-6) 69-62 in the German BBL in Saturday night's game. He recorded 11 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks in 21 minutes. TBB Trier (6-3) is placed sixth in the BBL. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This year Bucknor's overall stats are: 9.1ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.1apg in the nine games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Jamaican and Canadian.

   #4. McHugh Mattis (198-F-84, college: S.Florida, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to an easy victory against the 12th-ranked Guerreros (8-18) 107-91 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. Mattis recorded 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Abejas de Guanajuato (14-12) is placed eighth in the LNBP. Mattis is currently third on the list of best blockers. This season he has very high stats. Mattis averages: 15.1ppg, 8.3rpg, 1.1apg, 1.4bpg and 1.6spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #5. Geoff McDermott (203-F-87, agency: Interperformances, college: Providence, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Palencia Baloncesto's victory against the league leader River Andorra (7-1) 87-81 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. McDermott had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 11 rebounds. He also added 3 assists in 30 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Palencia Baloncesto (6-2) is placed third in the LEB Gold. This year McDermott has relatively solid stats: 10.6ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.6apg and 1.4spg in the eight games. He is a naturalized American.

   #6. Experienced Corey Williams (191-G-77, college: Alabama St., currently plays in Lebanon), who plays in the Lebanese Division A was not able to help Bejjeh (1-4) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Williams' very good performance Bejjeh was crushed 107-71 on the road by the leading Sagesse. He recorded a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 12 rebounds. Williams belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #9) and also on the list of most steals (third place). This season he has very high stats. Williams averages: 22.8ppg, 6.8rpg, 4.0apg and 3.2spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #7. Bryan Bailey (185-PG-80, college: Bucknell, currently plays in Germany) was not able to secure a victory for BBC Bayreuth in their game against Artland Dragons in the German BBL. Bailey recorded 9 points. His team was defeated 88-78. This season Bailey has relatively solid stats: 12.4ppg, 3.2rpg and 3.3apg. He is a naturalized American.

   #8. Sherman Gay (201-PF-82, college: Loyola Mary, currently plays in France) helped Le Portel win their game against the 16th-ranked Denain Voltaire 90-74 in the French ProB (second division) in Friday night's game. He scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Gay belongs to league's best blockers and is ranked #2. This season he has very high stats. Gay averages: 16.4ppg, 6.5rpg and 1.6bpg. He is a naturalized American.

   #9. Hugh Robinson (202-C-83, currently plays in Sweden) led Brahe Basket to a 2-point victory over the fourth-ranked Haga Haninge 86-84 in the Swedish Basketettan (second division) last Saturday. Robinson was the best player in that game. He scored 17 points, had 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 32 minutes. Robinson is currently first on the league's list of best blockers with 2.8bpg. This year he also averages: 14.1ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.2spg in the nine games.

   #10. Sebastian Douglas (193-G-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Cleveland St. win their game against the Ball State University 69-63 in the NCAA on Wednesday night. Douglas scored 7 points. He has reliable stats this season: 14.1ppg, 6.7rpg and 1.2spg. Douglas is a naturalized American.

Jamaica capture bronze medal at Under-16 men's Caribbean Basketball Conference Championships - 8 days ago

Jamaica captured the bronze medal for finishing third at the 2016 Under-16 men's Caribbean Basketball Conference (CBC) Championships which ended at the Cliff Robertson Sports Hall in Guyana last Saturday. The Jamaicans beat Barbados 66-58 in the third place play-off. La Union Formosa (LigaA) confirmed in their roster 33-year old American (has also Jamaican passport) center Torin Francis (210-114kg-83, college: Notre Dame). He played there last season. In 49 LigaA games he had 13.3ppg and 9.2rpg. Francis helped them to make it to the final after they ended regular season as second best team.
