Roy Hibbert's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Jamaicans playing currently abroad - Jan 10, 2013

We bring you last week's top performances from Jamaicans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is former international center Roy Hibbert (218-86, college: Georgetown, currently plays in NBA). He led Indiana Pacers to a victory over the Milwaukee Bucks (18-16) 95-80 in the NBA in Saturday night's game. Hibbert was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 20 points and getting 15 rebounds. Hibbert also added 5 blocks in 30 minutes on the court. The Indiana Pacers have 21-14 record this season. It's Hibbert's fifth year with the team. He belongs to league's best blockers and is ranked #3 with 2.7bpg. Hibbert also averaged so far 9.7ppg, 8.4rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 40.2% and FT: 66.2% in the 35 games he played so far. He is a naturalized American. Hibbert played for the Jamaican senior national team three years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to former international forward Ronald Yates (201-83, college: St.Peter's, currently plays in Switzerland), who plays in the Swiss LNA. Yates could not help Fribourg (12-2) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the league leader Fribourg was crushed 102-72 on the road by the second-ranked Geneve Lions. Yates was the top scorer with 25 points. He also added 6 rebounds in 27 minutes. They ended the series of eleven consecutive victories. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Yates has relatively good stats this year: 13.0ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.4apg, 2FGP: 51.5%, 3FGP: 18.2% and FT: 63.3% in the 14 games. He is a naturalized American. Yates played for the Jamaican national team in 2010.

   #3. The Jamaican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Akeem Scott (186-83, college: High Point, currently plays in Mexico). Scott contributed to an easy victory against the league outsider Gigantes (3-35) crushing them 101-66 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. He recorded 8 points, 6 assists and 3 steals in 19 minutes. Pioneros de Quintana Roo-Cancun (11-11) is placed fifth in the LNBP. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Scott has relatively solid stats: 12.7ppg, 2.9rpg, 3.2apg, 1.5spg, 2FGP: 54.5%, 3FGP: 32.7% and FT: 76.0% in the 33 games. He is a naturalized American. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. Scott is also a member of the Jamaican senior national team.

   #4. Forward Vashil Fernandez (208-92, currently plays college basketball in the States) managed to help Valparaiso University to win against the Cleveland State University (1-2) crushing them 74-50 in the NCAA last Friday. He recorded only 2 points. The Valparaiso University has 2-1 conference record this season. Fernandez's overall stats this year are: 9.6ppg, 1.8apg and 1.1spg. He is a naturalized American. Fernandez is also Jamaican national team player.


The list of other players, who all have Jamaican passport but never been selected to any of Jamaican national teams:

   #1. McHugh Mattis (198-F-84, college: S.Florida, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) could not help Abejas (19-19) in their last game on Thursday. Despite his very good performance Abejas was defeated 107-103 at home by the leading Halcones UV Xalapa. Mattis was the top scorer with 32 points. He also added 5 rebounds. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Mattis belongs to league's best rebounders (ranked #4) and also on the list of best blockers (fourth place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Mattis averages: 17.1ppg, 8.9rpg, 1.2apg, 1.5bpg and 1.4spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #2. Experienced Corey Williams (191-G-77, college: Alabama St., currently plays in Lebanon), who plays in the Lebanese Division A was not able to help Bejjeh (4-7) in their last game. Despite Williams' very good performance Bejjeh was crushed 94-68 on the road by the second-ranked Al Riyadi. He was the top scorer with 29 points. Williams also added 6 boards, passed 3 assists and added 5 steals in 38 minutes. The Regular Season already ended. Williams is currently seventh on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of most steals (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 23.0ppg, 7.4rpg, 4.9apg and 2.9spg in the 11 games he played so far. Williams is a naturalized American.

   #3. Jermaine Bucknor (199-F-83, college: Richmond, currently plays in Germany) was the major contributor in a TBB Trier's victory against one of league's weakest teams EnBW Ludwigsburg (5-13) 79-73 in the German BBL in Wednesday night's game. He scored 16 points. TBB Trier (10-8) is placed seventh in the BBL. It's Bucknor's first season with the team. This year Bucknor averages: 7.5ppg and 2.5rpg. He has a dual citizenship: Jamaican and Canadian.

   #4. Corey Muirhead (197-F-83, college: W.Carolina, currently plays in Czech Republic) led BK Pardubice to a victory against the closely-ranked BK Prostejov (12-8) 75-66 in the Czech Republic NBL on Thursday night. He scored 15 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. BK JIP Pardubice (13-6) is placed third in the NBL. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Muirhead is currently fourth on the league's list of best rebounders. He has very reliable stats this season: 13.8ppg, 8.3rpg, 3.1apg and 1.3spg. Muirhead is another player who holds two passports: Canadian and Jamaican.

   #5. Adrian Uter (200-F/C-84, agency: Gross Zeev ISA, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Israel) contributed to a Maccabi Rishon's victory against the league outsider Galil Gilboa (3-9) 69-59 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. He scored 9 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in 34 minutes. Maccabi Rishon Le-Zion (6-6) is placed sixth in the Winner League. Uter belongs to league's best rebounders (ranked #7) and also on the list of best blockers (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 14.3ppg, 9.5rpg, 1.8apg, 1.5bpg and 1.2spg in the 12 games. Uter is a naturalized American.

   #6. Bryan Bailey (185-SG-80, college: Bucknell, currently plays in Germany), who plays in the German BBL was not able to secure a victory for BBC Bayreuth (8-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance BBC Bayreuth was defeated 85-74 in Bamberg by the leading Brose Baskets. Bailey was the top scorer with 18 points. This season he has relatively solid stats: 11.8ppg, 2.7rpg and 2.8apg. Bailey is a naturalized American.

   #7. Garry Gallimore (192-G-84, currently plays in Romania) helped Timisoara win their game against the closely-ranked Ploiesti 103-91 in the Romanian Division A in Monday night's game. He recorded 12 points. This season Gallimore averages: 7.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.0apg. He has both Jamaican and Canadian nationalities. Despite Gallimore's Jamaican passport, he previously played for the Canadian university national team and is probably not eligible to play for the Jamaican team.

   #8. Geoff McDermott (203-F-87, agency: Interperformances, college: Providence, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Palencia Baloncesto in a victory against one of league's weakest teams Melilla Baloncesto 82-73 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) last Friday. McDermott recorded 5 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in 23 minutes. McDermott is ranked seventh on the list of the best rebounders in the league with 6.7rpg. This year he also averages: 9.6ppg, 1.8apg and 1.1spg in the 13 games. McDermott is a naturalized American.

   #9. Sebastian Douglas (193-G-91, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Cleveland St. win their game against the University of Illinois-Chicago 60-50 in the NCAA on Monday night. He recorded 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. This season Douglas averages: 9.6ppg, 1.8apg and 1.1spg. He is a naturalized American.

   #10. Neveij Walters (198-F, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Idaho St. in their game against the University of North Dakota in the NCAA. Walters scored 9 points, had 4 rebounds and made 2 blocks in 16 minutes. His team lost 53-66. This year Walters' overall stats are: 9.6ppg, 1.8apg and 1.1spg in the 13 games.

Enel Basket Brindisi (Serie A) strengthened their roster with addition of 26-year old Jamaican ex-international swingman Durand Scott (196-92kg-90, college: Miami, FL). It is actually his comeback to Brindisi as he has played here before. Scott has a double citizenship as he also holds American passport. Jamaica capture bronze medal at Under-16 men's Caribbean Basketball Conference Championships - 9 days ago

Jamaica captured the bronze medal for finishing third at the 2016 Under-16 men's Caribbean Basketball Conference (CBC) Championships which ended at the Cliff Robertson Sports Hall in Guyana last Saturday. The Jamaicans beat Barbados 66-58 in the third place play-off. Francis re-signs at La Union - 12 days ago

La Union Formosa (LigaA) confirmed in their roster 33-year old American (has also Jamaican passport) center Torin Francis (210-114kg-83, college: Notre Dame). He played there last season. In 49 LigaA games he had 13.3ppg and 9.2rpg. Francis helped them to make it to the final after they ended regular season as second best team.
