The community of Holland in the parish of Trelawny are celebrating, after securing their first hold on the WBA Men's Basketball Championship title Sunday night when the Holland Saints edged the Innercity Avalanche 63-60 in the best-of-three finals to sweep the series 2-0 and lift the trophy in front of a good-sized crowd at the Mobay Cricket Club court. Sunday night's game was considered the most competitive in the series. One that challenged an apparent laden-legged Saints during the opening salvo to dig deep among its reserves to stave off a relenting Innercity Avalanche unit in an attempt to get back into the game. From the start, Holland looked businesslike, while the Avs looked like a bunch of minions struggling to stay afloat, but gained some traction to close the gap between them trailing 14-20 at the end of the first quarter. Saints made a few substitutions which affected their momentum allowing Avalanche to stay close, however Saints were able to regain their focus and maintain their 14-12 second quarter lead. Saints also won the third quarter 17-15 boasting a massive 10-point lead (51-41) going into the final quarter. Avalanche won the fourth 19-12 but they just ran out of time at the very end. Hugh Smith (G) led the way for Holland with 22 points and four rebounds. David Jarrett supported him with a double-double of 12 points, 12 block shots and five rebounds. For Innercity Avalanche, Orlan Lamey scored game-high 25 points and seven rebounds, while Dovial Smith bagged 11 points and three rebounds in the loss.
