Herbert Morrison Technical completed an unprecedented third-straight double championships in the Inter Secondary Sports Association Western Conference boys Under-16 and Under-19 basketball after sweeping Cornwall College 2-0 in their best-of-three finals that ended at the Montego Bay Cricket Club on Friday. On Friday, the Dave Black-coached Herbert Morrison won 54-42 in the Under-16 game and 73-49 at the Under-19 level, after winning 51-30 and 76-34, respectively, in Game One played on Wednesday. Additionally, they completed their double without a blemish, having won all their games played this season in both categories. Former champions Muschett High took third place in both sections, beating Rhodes Hall in the Under-16 section 31-25 in the play-off on Friday.Ryheem Barrett of Herbert Morrison, who took the individual awards for leading shot blocker and top rebounder, was named the Most Valuable Player in the Under-16 section, while his teammate Tafari Vassell, who also won the award for most steals and top scorer in the Under-19, was also named MVP. Despite improved performances on Friday, Cornwall College were no match for Herbert Morrison as both teams will now set their sights on the all-island play-offs set to start in January. Notwithstanding a game-high 30 points by Jowayne Jones, yet another third-quarter collapse sentenced the Cornwall College Under-16 team - who trailed by a point (26-27) at the half time break after trailing by nine (19-10) after the first quarter. Herbert Morrison outscored them by 10 points 15-5 in the third quarter, and even a competitive fourth quarter could not get them back into the game. Davaughn Campbell led Herbert Morrison with 22 points, nine rebounds and eight steals, while David Gordon scored 18 points and had 13 rebounds.
In the senior game, Herbert Morrison who had five players score in double digits, led 18-9, 44-19 and 51-27 at the end of the quarters. Shaquile Benti was the top scorer with 13 points, while three players got 12 each - Michael Palmer who also had 15 rebounds, Brendan Dawkins, Vassell who had a triple-double with 22 rebounds and 10 steals - while Ralique Grant scored 10 points. Ryan Whyte scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds for Cornwall College, Giovanni Bailey scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds, while Alwayde Thompson scored 11 points.
