The most exciting game of round 31 in the CIBACOPA took place in Guaymas. This derby game ended with only two-point home defeat of much higher ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas (20-7) to fourth ranked Fuerza Guinda Nogales (14-13) 78-76 on Friday evening. It ended at the same time the five-game winning streak of Ostioneros de Guaymas. The guests trailed by 5 points after three quarters before their 20-13 charge, which allowed them to win the game. Strangely Ostioneros de Guaymas outrebounded Fuerza Guinda Nogales 44-32 including 17 on the offensive glass. It was a great evening for Bahamas power forward Ryan Moss (200-74, college: UALR) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 8 rebounds. American swingman Cheyne Gadson (192-80, college: Oklahoma St.) helped adding 18 points and 5 assists. At the losing side American forward Jerome Habel (208-85, college: San Diego St.) responded with 24 points, 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Fuerza Guinda Nogales have a solid series of four victories in a row. They moved-up to third place, which they share with Tijuana. Rayos de Hermosillo's coach Dan Tacheny felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. American forward James Penny (198-76, college: TCU) came up with 13 points and 8 rebounds for Tijuana Zonkeys in the defeat. Defending champion maintains first place with 23-6 record. Tijuana Zonkeys at the other side keep the third position with 13 games lost. They share it with Nogales. Rayos de Hermosillo will again play against Tijuana Zonkeys (#3) at home in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Tijuana Zonkeys will have a break next round. Bottom-ranked Trigueros de Ciudad Obregon managed to get the second consecutive victory on Friday night. This time they won against eighth-ranked Pioneros Los Mochis88-82. 30-year old point guard Luis Ramirez (180-PG-82) had a very impressive game in the last round for Tijuana and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 30. He had the game-high 33 points adding four rebounds and six assists for Tijuana in his team's victory, helping them to crush Los Mochis (#8, 9-17) with 18-point margin 106-88. Tijuana maintains the 3rd position in Mexican league. Tijuana is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit lower in the standings. They need more victories to improve their 14-12 record. In the team's last game Ramirez had a remarkable 75.0% from 2-point range and got six three-pointers out of 9 attempts. He just recently signed at Tijuana, being already a very valuable addition to the team. Luis Ramirez averages this season 18.3ppg.
Second best performed player last round was Sammy Monroe (198-F-85) of Cananea. He is American forward in his first season at Cananea. In the last game Monroe recorded impressive 33 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Of course he lead Cananea to another comfortable win outscoring the higher-ranked Hermosillo (#1, 22-6) 92-70. This victory allowed Cananea to move up to 5th position in the standings. His team is not often considered as one of the league's best with a mere 12-16 record. Monroe is one of the most experienced players at Cananea and has a reputation of one of team's most reliable players. He belongs to the best scorers in the league with 24.9ppg (#2). He also registered 6.3 boards per game. Former Newberry College star Monroe is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market.
Third place about best performers goes to guard Marcus Elliott (191-G-84) of Navolato (#6). Elliott got into 30-points club by scoring 39 points in the last round. He went also for six rebounds . Despite Elliott's great performance Navolato lost 97-102 to the higher-ranked Guaymas (#2, 20-6). But his team cannot count on just a single shooter as he also needs help of the other teammates. The chances of Navolato ranking at the top of the league, however are very questionable as they have already lost 16 games, recording just twelve victories. With bigger assistance of his teammates, Elliott could help Navolato to bring them higher in the standings. Elliott has a great season in Mexico. After 14 games, he made it on the list of the league's leaders in points with 22.1ppg (4th best).
