LNBP Round 33: Soles edge Ciudad by three points - Feb 7, 2017

There are only two more rounds left in the Regular Season in LNBP.

Sixth-ranked Ciudad (14-19) made lots of trouble for second ranked Soles (21-12) in Mexicali on Saturday. Soles managed to secure only three-point victory 93-90. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 3 points after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 14-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 93-90. The best player for the winners was American power forward Justin Keenan (202-88, college: Ferris St.) who had a double-double by scoring 43 points (!!!), 13 rebounds and 4 assists. point guard Alexander Perez Kaufmann (191-93, agency: Pro Sports) chipped in 16 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was the former international power forward Arim Solares (202-83) who recorded 21 points and 9 rebounds. Soles have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 21-12 record having eight points less than leader Fuerza Regia. Ciudad lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh position with 19 games lost. Soles are looking forward to face bottom-ranked Correcaminos (#10) in Ciudad Victoria in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Ciudad will play on the road against Santos in San Luis Potosi and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
Leader Fuerza Regia delivered the thirtieth victory. This time they beat 7th ranked Barreteros (14-18) 66-59 in Zacatecas. It was a good game for Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds. Hector Hernandez contributed with 13 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American point guard Carl Jones (180-91, college: St.Joseph's, agency: DTMones) answered with 19 points and 6 assists for Barreteros. Fuerza Regia maintains first place with 30-2 record. Newly promoted Barreteros dropped to the sixth position with 18 games lost. Fuerza Regia will play against Garzas (#4) in Plata Hidalgo in the next round. Barreteros will play at home against Abejas and hope to get back on the winning track.

A very interesting game took place in Aguascalientes. It ended with only three-point home defeat of 4th placed Panteras (18-13) to ninth ranked Abejas (10-24) 96-93 on Saturday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the home team. It ended at the same time the seven-game winning streak of Panteras. Manuel Guzman nailed 36 points (!!!), 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side. Abejas maintains ninth place with 10-24 record. Panteras at the other side dropped to the fifth position with 13 games lost. Abejas' next round opponent will be higher ranked Barreteros (#6) in Zacatecas and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Panteras will play on the road against Toros in Nuevo Laredo and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 33 Toros defeated Correcaminos in Nuevo Laredo 96-85. Garzas beat Santos at home 100-83.
The best stats of 33th round was 20 points and 4 assists by Brandon Provost of Barreteros.

Barreteros - Indios 90-58

The game in Zacatecas supposed to be also quite interesting. 6th ranked Ciudad (14-19) played at the court of seventh ranked Barreteros (14-18). Barreteros smashed Ciudad 90-58 on Monday. The game without a history. Barreteros led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. American guard Paul Marigney (192-82, college: St.Mary's, CA) stepped up and scored 14 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists for the winners and his fellow American import guard Brandon Provost (190-90, college: UTRGV) chipped in 20 points and 4 assists. Four Barreteros players scored in double figures. The best for the losing side was the former international power forward Arim Solares (202-83) with 13 points and 4 assists and forward Santiago Garay (196-92) scored 11 points and 7 rebounds. Barreteros moved-up to sixth place. Ciudad lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the seventh position with 19 games lost. Barreteros will meet at home Abejas (#9) in the next round. Ciudad will play against Santos in San Luis Potosi and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Correcaminos - Toros 85-96

There was no surprise in Ciudad Victoria where 10th ranked Correcaminos (6-27) were defeated by third ranked Toros (20-13) 96-85. The game was mostly controlled by Toros. Correcaminos was better in third quarter 26-22. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Toros shot 61.8 percent from the field and made 19-of-22 charity shots (86.4 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. International forward Marco Ramos (198-87, college: Grand Canyon) nailed 19 points for the winning side and American swingman Rene Rougeau (198-86, college: UNLV) accounted for 15 points and 5 rebounds. Canadian forward Grandy Glaze (204, college: Grand Canyon) came up with 18 points and 8 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) and the former international point guard Omar Quintero (182-81, college: S.Nazarene) added 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Correcaminos in the defeat. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Toros have a solid series of four victories in a row. Newly promoted Toros maintains third place with 20-13 record having nine points less than leader Fuerza Regia. Correcaminos lost eighth consecutive game. They stay dead last with 27 lost games. Toros' next round opponent will be Panteras (#5) in Aguascalientes. Correcaminos will play on the road against the league's second-placed Soles (#2) in Mexicali and hope to win that game.

Leader Fuerza Regia delivered the thirtieth victory. This time they beat 7th ranked Barreteros (14-18) 66-59 in Zacatecas. The guests were tied after three quarters but managed to speed up in last quarter eventually winning the game. Fuerza Regia dominated down low during the game scoring 48 of its points in the paint compared to Barreteros' 14. It was a good game for Nigerian center Jeleel Akindele (216-83, college: Chicago St., agency: BeoBasket) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 12 rebounds. The former international Hector Hernandez (205-85, college: Fresno St., agency: Pro Sports) contributed with 13 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. Four Fuerza Regia players scored in double figures. American point guard Carl Jones (180-91, college: St.Joseph's, agency: DTMones) answered with 19 points and 6 assists and the other American import center Benjamin Puckett (205-83, college: Clayton St.) added 12 points and 12 rebounds in the effort for Barreteros. No shocking result in a game in Plata Hidalgo where fifth ranked Garzas (19-14) defeated 8th ranked Santos (12-22) 100-83. The game without a history. Garzas led from the first minutes and controlled entire game increasing their lead in each quarter. They dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Santos' 38 and made 24-of-29 charity shots (82.8 percent) during the game. Garzas players were unselfish on offense dishing 24 assists. The former international forward Stephen Soriano (200-85, college: Colorado Mesa) nailed 23 points for the winning side and American forward Tyrone White (201-90, college: CSU Bakersfield) accounted for 17 points and 4 assists. Four Garzas players scored in double figures. American forward Greg Smith (198-91, college: Colorado St.) came up with 25 points and 8 rebounds and the other American import forward B.J. West (211-89, college: Jackson St.) added 17 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for Santos in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Garzas moved-up to fourth place. Santos lost third consecutive game. They keep the eighth position with 22 games lost. Garzas' next round opponent will be league's leader Fuerza Regia in Monterrey and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Windsor Express (NBL Canada) strengthened their roster with addition of 33-year old American power forward Taj Gray (204-107kg-84, college: Oklahoma). He played in the summer at Nauticos of Mazatlan in Mexican CIBACOPA, but left the team in April. In 7 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.4ppg, 2.3rpg and 1.0apg.
