CIBACOPA Round 6: Tijuana Zonkeys lose to Rayos de Hermosillo - Apr 1, 2017

After 6 rounds played we can already see who rules in the CIBACOPA and who belongs to weaker ones.

Round 6 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Tijuana Zonkeys (4-2). They were defeated by third ranked Rayos de Hermosillo (4-1) 91-81 on Friday night. It was a key game for the top position in the league. Rayos de Hermosillo looked well-organized offensively handing out 21 assists. DR Congolese-Canadian guard Myck Kabongo (191-92, college: Texas) scored 24 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American forward Emmanuel Little (196-85, college: N.Dakota) chipped in 11 points and 13 rebounds during the contest. The best for the losing side was American guard Trayvon Lathan (201-84, college: Chowan) with a double-double by scoring 25 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists. Rayos de Hermosillo have a solid four-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Guasave. Tijuana Zonkeys at the other side dropped to the third place with two games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Guasave. Tijuana Zonkeys will have a break next week, which should allow them to rest and make it back to the top of the standings. Rayos de Hermosillo will try to continue on its current victory against third ranked Tijuana Zonkeys at home.
Pioneros Los Mochis has finally registered their first victory this season after four consecutive losses. The win is especially important as they edged much higher ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas (2-3) 69-68. American forward Cameron Forte (201-93, college: Portland St.) notched a double-double by scoring 18 points and 13 rebounds to lead the effort and Jabs Newby supported him with 22 points and 4 assists. Even 21 points and 6 assists by American guard Brandon Provost (190-90, college: UTRGV) did not help to save the game for Ostioneros de Guaymas. Pioneros Los Mochis (1-4) left bottom position moving up to ninth place, which they share with Culiacan. Ostioneros de Guaymas at the other side dropped to the sixth position with three games lost. They share it with Mazatlan. Pioneros Los Mochis will again play against higher ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas (#6) at home in the next round and it may be quite challenging game. Ostioneros de Guaymas will have a break next round.
The game in Mazatlan supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Frayles de Guasave (4-1) played at the court of 6th ranked Lobos UAD Mazatlan (2-3). Frayles de Guasave smashed Lobos UAD Mazatlan 120-99 on Friday. The best player for the winners was Sammy Yeager who scored 25 points and 5 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was Mike Liabo who recorded 28 points. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Frayles de Guasave have a solid three-game winning streak. They keep a position of league leader, which they share with Hermosillo. Defending champion Lobos UAD Mazatlan keeps the sixth place with three games lost. They share the position with Guaymas. Frayles de Guasave will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Lobos UAD Mazatlan will play again against the league's leader Frayles de Guasave (#1) and hope to secure a win.
A very interesting game took place in Durango. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 8th ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (1-4) to ninth ranked Aguilas Doradas de Durango (2-4) 78-77 in the fight for the eighth place. It was a good game for Dominique Keller who saved his team from a defeat with 18 points. Aguilas Doradas de Durango moved-up to eighth place. Caballeros de Culiacan lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. Aguilas Doradas de Durango's next round opponent will be again Caballeros de Culiacan (#9) at home.

In the last game of round 6 Obregon won against Navolato on the opponent's court 94-86.

Navolato - Obregon 86-94

There was a minor upset when one of their biggest challengers Garra Canera de Navolato (3-2) was defeated at home by seventh ranked Halcones de Ciudad Obregon (3-2) 94-86. 25 personal fouls committed by Garra Canera de Navolato helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Americans were the main players on the court. It was a good game for forward Michael Glover (203-87, college: Iona) who led his team to a victory with 32 points and 7 rebounds. Forward Landon Atterberry (198-93, college: LIU Brooklyn, agency: Aspire Sports) contributed with 20 points for the winners. Swingman Dwayne Mitchell (196-82, college: La-Lafayette) replied with 25 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists and forward Mychal Ammons (198-92, college: S.Alabama) added 23 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks in the effort for Garra Canera de Navolato. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Navolato. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon will have a break next round. Garra Canera de Navolato will play again at home against Halcones de Ciudad Obregon (#4) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Durango - Culiacan 78-77

A very interesting game took place in Durango. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 8th ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (1-4) to ninth ranked Aguilas Doradas de Durango (2-4) 78-77 in the fight for the eighth place. It was a good game for American power forward Dominique Keller (205-88, college: Illinois) who saved his team from a defeat with 18 points. Martin Zamarco contributed with 16 points and 5 assists for the winners. Worth to mention Keller played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped get the job in pro basketball. American center Benjamin Puckett (205-83, college: Clayton St.) replied with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 15 rebounds and his fellow American import swingman Langston Morris-Walker (196-94, college: Oregon St., agency: SDJ Sports) added 23 points in the effort for Caballeros de Culiacan. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Aguilas Doradas de Durango moved-up to eighth place. Caballeros de Culiacan lost fourth consecutive game. They dropped to the ninth position with four games lost. Aguilas Doradas de Durango's next round opponent will be again Caballeros de Culiacan (#9) at home.

Mazatlan - Guasave 99-120

The game in Mazatlan supposed to be also quite interesting. Second ranked Frayles de Guasave (4-1) played at the court of 6th ranked Lobos UAD Mazatlan (2-3). Frayles de Guasave smashed Lobos UAD Mazatlan 120-99 on Friday. Frayles de Guasave made 27-of-34 free shots (79.4 percent) during the game, while Lobos UAD Mazatlan only scored seven points from the stripe. Frayles de Guasave shot the lights out from three sinking 17 long-distance shots on high 58.6 percentage. The best player for the winners was American forward Sammy Yeager (193-89, college: CS Fullerton) who scored 25 points and 5 assists. The other American import forward Travis Franklin (200-88, college: Colorado St., agency: Interperformances) chipped in 30 points. At the other side the best for losing team was American swingman Mike Liabo (198-91, college: Tenn-Martin) who recorded 28 points and the former international swingman Jorge-Alfredo Casillas (196-90) added 15 points and 6 assists respectively. Windsor Express (NBL Canada) strengthened their roster with addition of 33-year old American power forward Taj Gray (204-107kg-84, college: Oklahoma). He played in the summer at Nauticos of Mazatlan in Mexican CIBACOPA, but left the team in April. In 7 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.4ppg, 2.3rpg and 1.0apg.
