CIBACOPA Round 28: Lobos UAD Mazatlan beats Caballeros de Culiacan by one after a very close game - May 17, 2017

The most exciting game of round 28 in the CIBACOPA took place in Mazatlan. This derby game ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 7th ranked Caballeros de Culiacan (11-16) to sixth ranked Lobos UAD Mazatlan (12-15) 84-83 on Tuesday evening. The hosts trailed by 10 points after first quarter, but they rallied back winning two of next three quarters and won the game by 1 point. American players dominated the game. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Pe'shon Howard (190-90, college: USC) who helped to win the game recording 22 points and 6 rebounds. Forward Omar Thomas (196-82, college: UTEP) contributed with 14 points and 5 rebounds for the winners. Lobos UAD Mazatlan's coach Eric Weissling used an eleven-player rotation in such tough game. Guard Chris Crawford (193-92, college: Memphis, agency: Babcock Sports) replied with 27 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for Caballeros de Culiacan. Defending champion maintains sixth position with 12-15 record, which they share with Los Mochis. Caballeros de Culiacan at the other side dropped to the eighth place with 16 games lost. Lobos UAD Mazatlan is again looking forward to face Caballeros de Culiacan (#8) at home in the next round. Caballeros de Culiacan will have a break next round.
Very important is a road loss of second ranked Halcones de Ciudad Obregon (18-9) against tenth ranked Aguilas Doradas de Durango (9-17) on Tuesday night. Visiting Halcones de Ciudad Obregon was defeated by Aguilas Doradas de Durango in Durango 111-97. Worth to mention a great performance of naturalized American guard Martin Samarco (190-85, college: Bowling Green) who helped to win the game recording 30 points and 7 rebounds (made all of his seven free throws) and Jordon Crawford who added 21 points and 13 assists during the contest. At the losing side American forward Michael Glover (203-87, college: Iona) responded with 23 points and 8 rebounds. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Newly promoted Aguilas Doradas de Durango maintains tenth position with 9-17 record. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon at the other side keeps the second place with nine games lost. Aguilas Doradas de Durango will again play against league's second-placed Halcones de Ciudad Obregon at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game. Halcones de Ciudad Obregon will have a break next round.

Host Tijuana Zonkeys were defeated by Pioneros Los Mochis in Tijuana 92-81. The winners were led by J Almada who scored that evening 32 points and 7 rebounds. Even 21 points and 4 assists by Dominic Cheek did not help to save the game for Tijuana Zonkeys. Tijuana Zonkeys' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Pioneros Los Mochis moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Mazatlan. Loser Tijuana Zonkeys dropped to the fourth position with 12 games lost. Pioneros Los Mochis will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Tijuana Zonkeys will play again against Pioneros Los Mochis (#6) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
CIBACOPA top team - Rayos de Hermosillo (21-5) managed to deliver another win. This time they beat fifth ranked Frayles de Guasave (13-14) 94-85. American players dominated also this game. Myke Henry fired 27 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Rayos de Hermosillo have a solid four-game winning streak. They maintain first position with 21-5 record. Frayles de Guasave at the other side keeps the fifth place with 14 games lost. Rayos de Hermosillo's next round opponent will be again Frayles de Guasave (#5) at home.
Worth to mention about the upset in a game between Ostioneros de Guaymas (14-13) and Garra Canera de Navolato (10-17), which took place in Navolato. Higher ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas were outleveled in a road game by ninth ranked Garra Canera de Navolato 96-76 on Tuesday. Garra Canera de Navolato maintains ninth position with 10-17 record. Loser Ostioneros de Guaymas dropped to the third place with 13 games lost. Garra Canera de Navolato will face again higher ranked Ostioneros de Guaymas (#3) at home in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.

The most impressive performance of 28th round was 29 points and 7 rebounds by Travis Franklin of Guasave.

Mazatlan - Culiacan 84-83

Very important is a home loss of third ranked Tijuana Zonkeys (13-12) against eighth ranked Pioneros Los Mochis (12-15) on Tuesday night. The winners were led by J Almada who scored that evening 32 points and 7 rebounds and American forward Terrance Motley (201-91, college: Sam Houston St.) supported him with 22 points. Even 21 points and 4 assists by American guard Dominic Cheek (198-91, college: Villanova) did not help to save the game for Tijuana Zonkeys. His fellow American import guard Trayvon Lathan (201-84, college: Chowan) added 13 points for lost side. Tijuana Zonkeys' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Forward Travis Franklin (200-88, college: Colorado St., agency: Interperformances) produced 29 points and 7 rebounds and power forward Dominique Keller (205-88, college: Illinois) added 24 points and 7 rebounds respectively for lost side. Windsor Express (NBL Canada) strengthened their roster with addition of 33-year old American power forward Taj Gray (204-107kg-84, college: Oklahoma). He played in the summer at Nauticos of Mazatlan in Mexican CIBACOPA, but left the team in April. In 7 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.4ppg, 2.3rpg and 1.0apg.
