We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Andres Rodriguez

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Andres Rodriguez (184-81, college: American, currently plays in Spain). Rodriguez contributed to a 3-point Blusens Monbus' victory against the 16th-ranked CB Canarias (0-3) 71-68 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. He scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 6 assists. Blusens Monbus Obradoiro CAB (3-0) is placed second in the ACB. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Rodriguez is currently first on the list of best passers. This season he averages: 6.7ppg, 3.3rpg, 7.3apg, 2FGP: 56.3%(9-16) and FT: 66.7%. Rodriguez played for the Puerto Rican senior national team years ago.

Ricardo Melendez

   #2. Second place goes to an international point guard Ricardo Melendez (179-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico). He led Panteras to a victory over the closely-ranked Abejas (8-6) 87-71 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Saturday night. Melendez was MVP of the game. He recorded 30 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds in 37 minutes. Panteras de Aguascalientes (8-6) is placed sixth in the LNBP. Melendez is ranked fourth on the list of the top scorers in the league with 22.6ppg. This year his other stats are: 2.9rpg, 2.6apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 47.1%, 3FGP: 34.7% and FT: 85.3% in the 14 games he played so far. Melendez played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2012.

Alexander Galindo

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Liga SudAmericana). He was the main contributor in Malvin's victory against the closely-ranked Amistad (0-3) 81-69 in the Liga Sudamericana in Thursday night's game. Galindo was the best player in that game. He scored 20 points. Malvin (1-2) is placed seventh in the Liga Sudamericana. The Preliminary Round already ended in the Liga Sudamericana. It's Galindo's first season with the team. Galindo has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 40.9%, 3FGP: 36.8% and FT: 83.3%. Galindo played for the Puerto Rican national team years ago.

TreVon Hughes

   #4. Point guard TreVon Hughes (183-87, agency: Edge Sports, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Lithuania) was the major contributor in a Pieno Zvaigzdes' victory against the league outsider Naglis Palangos (0-4) crushing them 93-59 in the Lithuanian LKL last Saturday. He scored 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in a mere 19 minutes. Pieno Zvaigzdes Pasvalys (2-1) is placed sixth in the LKL. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Hughes is currently sixth on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best passers (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this year: 14.0ppg, 4.7rpg, 3.3apg and 1.3spg in the three games. Hughes has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Despite he played previously for the USA national team, Hughes is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

Angel Alamo

   #5. International power forward Angel Alamo (206-85, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) could not help the league outsider Guerreros (0-12) in their last game on Thursday. Despite Alamo's very good performance Guerreros was defeated 90-83 at home by the lower-ranked Pioneros (#5). He recorded a double-double by scoring 32 points and getting 10 rebounds. Alamo also added 3 assists and 3 steals. Alamo is ranked eighth on the list of the top scorers in the league. This season he has very high stats. Alamo averages: 19.7ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.5spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Despite Alamo played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Alamo used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Forward Ivan Aska (200-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in Belgium), who plays in the Belgian Ethias League was not able to help Leuven Bears (1-2) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Leuven Bears lost 83-90 on the road to the higher-ranked (#5) Belfius Mons-Hainaut. Aska had a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 11 rebounds in 33 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his first season in pro basketball. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Aska is currently sixth on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (second place). He has very impressive stats this year: 16.0ppg and 8.0rpg in the three games. Despite Aska played previously for the U.S. Virgin Islands national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

Gilberto Clavell

   #7. Former U21 international forward Gilberto Clavell (201-89, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Sam Houston St., currently plays in Finland) contributed to a 1-point Kouvot's victory against the closely-ranked Joensuun Kataja (2-2) 67-66 in the Finnish Korisliiga last Wednesday. Clavell was the top player that evening. He recorded 21 points and grabbed 7 rebounds; not bad, considering it's only Clavell's second season in pro basketball. Kouvot Kouvola (2-1) is placed fifth in the Korisliiga. . This season Clavell has very high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 6.0rpg and 2.0apg. Clavell used to play for the Puerto Rican U21 national team six years ago.

Denis Clemente

   #8. Point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, also represented by KMG Sports Management, college: Kansas St., currently plays in Italy), who plays in the Italian Lega2 (second division) was not able to secure a victory for one of league's weakest teams Nuovo Napoli (1-1) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Nuovo Napoli was edged in an overtime 100-97 in Barcellona by the higher-ranked (#5) Sigma. Clemente was the second best scorer with 24 points in 41 minutes. . Clemente has very impressive stats this year: 18.5ppg, 2.0rpg and 3.5apg in the two games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Despite Clemente played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Clemente used to play for Caciques de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

   #9. Former international point guard Javier Gonzalez (182-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Czech Republic) contributed to a BC Kolin's victory against the league outsider BK Usti nad Labem (0-5) 91-80 in the Czech Republic NBL in Saturday night's game. He recorded 15 points, 5 assists and 4 steals. BC Kolin (3-2) is placed sixth in the NBL. . Gonzalez is currently fourth on the league's list of most steals. This season he has very good stats: 10.2ppg, 2.2rpg, 3.8apg and 2.4spg. Gonzalez used to play for the Puerto Rican national team six years ago.

David Huertas

   #10. Swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA couldn't help Obras (4-5) in their last game. Despite his good performance the fifth-placed Obras was badly defeated 98-80 in a derby game by the higher-ranked (#4) Boca Juniors in the South group. Huertas recorded 11 points in 26 minutes. It was Obras' fourth consecutive loss in a row. . Huertas has relatively good stats this year: 10.6ppg, 1.8rpg and 1.5apg in the eight games. He is international player as years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican senior national team.

   #11. International point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, another player represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico) helped Halcones Rojos win their game against the 12th-ranked Lechugueros 87-78 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. Rivera scored 12 points, grabbed 7 boards, dished 5 assists and stole 3 balls. This season Rivera has relatively solid stats: 11.6ppg, 3.8rpg, 3.5apg and 1.6spg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team earlier this year.

   #12. An experienced international center Daniel Santiago (216-76, agency: Priority Sports, college: N.Mexico, currently plays in Argentina) faced previously mentioned David Huertas in the Argentinian LigaA last game. Santiago helped Boca Juniors win their game against the fifth-ranked Obras 98-80 in a derby game. He recorded 14 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 24 minutes. This year Santiago's overall stats are: 8.9ppg, 5.4rpg and 1.3apg in the nine games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Despite Santiago played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Santiago used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #13. Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) helped Toros win their game against the league outsider Gigantes crushing them 105-82 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. He scored 15 points and added 3 passes. Pagan has reliable stats this season: 10.5ppg, 2.0rpg and 4.0apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite Pagan played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Pagan used to play for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #14. Former international guard Paul Graham (192-85, college: Florida Atlantic, currently plays in Romania) helped Gaz Metan win their game against the 13th-ranked CS Farul Constanca crushing them 95-70 in the Romanian Division A on Saturday night. He scored 11 points in 25 minutes. Graham's stats this year are: 12.5ppg and 2.5rpg in the two games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite Graham played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Graham used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #15. Former international swingman Joel Jones (196-81, college: Sacramento St., currently plays in Argentina) is a teammate of previously mentioned Daniel Santiago and both played together in the last Argentinian LigaA game. Jones helped Boca Juniors win their game against the fifth-ranked Obras 98-80 in a derby game. He recorded 12 points. Jones' total stats this season are: 8.6ppg, 2.2rpg and 1.2apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite Jones played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Jones used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.


One more player who has never been selected to any of national teams, but has Puerto Rican passport:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Poland) led Stelmet ZG to a victory over the closely-ranked Siarka Jezioro (2-1) 92-84 in the Polish TBL in Sunday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Hodge scored 25 points and added 8 assists in 36 minutes. Stelmet Zielona Gora (3-0) is placed second in the TBL. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Hodge is ranked third on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best passers (first place). He has individually a very good year with high stats. Hodge averages: 20.3ppg, 2.7rpg, 8.7apg and 1.3spg in the three games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican. Despite Hodge's Puerto Rican passport, he currently plays for the U.S. Virgin Islands national team and is not eligible to play for the Puerto Rican team.

Fuerza Regia Monterrey (LNBP) inked 29-year old Puerto Rican international power forward Ricardo Sanchez (212-104kg-87, agency: BeoBasket). He played in the summer at Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican BSN league. In 16 games he averaged 10.6ppg, 4.8rpg and 2.6apg. Sanchez also played that season for Manati (also in BSN) where in 24 games he had 13.3ppg, 5.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.2spg. Puerto Rico triumphs at 2016 Centrobasket U15 Championship - 17 hours ago

Puerto Rico triumphed at 2016 Centrobasket U15 Championship beating the Dominican Republic 74-67 in the Final game. Puerto Rico started with a 17-11 lead and added a 23-14 rally in the second period. Dominican Republic managed to post two narrow wins in the second half, but could not win the game. Miranda top-scored for the winners with 28 points and 12 rebounds, while Curbelo added 18. Jones replied with 23 points in a loss. Mexico finished third and Panama ended up on the fourth place.   [read more]

Estudiantes sign Dylan Page, ex Arecibo - 4 days ago

Movistar Estudiantes (Liga Endesa) signed experienced 34-year old American forward Dylan Page (204-104kg-82, college: Wisc.-Milwaukee). He played this summer at Capitanes de Arecibo in Puerto Rican BSN league, but left. In three Liga Americas games he had 7.0ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.0apg.
