David Huertas selected the top Puerto Rican playing abroad in last week's games - Oct 27, 2012

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Puerto Rican players, who play currently abroad.


David Huertas
David Huertas
   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA. He could not help Obras (4-7) in their last game. Despite Huertas' very good performance the seventh-placed Obras lost 92-96 at home to the higher-ranked (#5) Wuber-Est.Bahia in the South group. He was the top scorer with 26 points in 34 minutes on the court. It was Obras' seventh consecutive loss in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Huertas has relatively good stats this year: 12.0ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.2apg, 2FGP: 47.8%, 3FGP: 40.8% and FT: 72.7% in the 10 games he played so far. He played for the Puerto Rican senior national team years ago.

Gilberto Clavell

   #2. Second place goes to former U21 international forward Gilberto Clavell (201-89, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Sam Houston St., currently plays in Finland). Clavell led Kouvot to a victory over the closely-ranked Kauhajoen Karhu (4-2) 77-73 in the Finnish Korisliiga last Saturday. He was MVP of the game. Clavell had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 10 rebounds in 31 minutes; not bad, considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Kouvot Kouvola (4-2) is placed fourth in the Korisliiga. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Clavell is currently sixth on the league's list of top scorers with 19.2ppg. This year he also averages: 6.2rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 68.2%(45-66), 3FGP: 66.7% and FT: 63.3% in the six games. Clavell played for the Puerto Rican U21 national team in 2006.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international point guard Andres Rodriguez (184-81, college: American, currently plays in Spain). He was not able to help Blusens Monbus (3-1) in their game against Valencia Basket (4-0) in the Spanish ACB. Rodriguez recorded 5 points and added 6 passes in 25 minutes. Blusens Monbus lost 64-68 on the road to the second-ranked Valencia Basket. They ended the series of three consecutive victories. . Rodriguez is the league's best passer with 7.0apg. He also averaged so far 6.3ppg, 3.0rpg, 2FGP: 55.6%(10-18) and FT: 83.3% in the four games. Rodriguez played for the Puerto Rican national team years ago.

Daniel Santiago

   #4. An experienced center Daniel Santiago (216-76, agency: Priority Sports, college: N.Mexico, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA was not able to secure a victory for Boca Juniors (4-7) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance Boca Juniors (#6) was defeated 75-71 in Rio Tercero by the lower-ranked 9 de Julio (#8) in the South group. Santiago was the top scorer with 19 points. . Santiago's overall stats this season are: 9.6ppg, 5.0rpg and 1.4apg. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Despite Santiago played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Santiago used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. International swingman John Holland (195-88, college: Boston U., currently plays in Spain) was the major contributor in Cajasol's victory against the closely-ranked G.Canaria 2014 (2-2) 74-63 in the Spanish ACB on Saturday night. He recorded 16 points in 29 minutes. Cajasol Banca Civica Sevilla (1-3) is placed 14th in the ACB. It was his team's first victory after three consecutive loses. . It's Holland's first season with the team. This year Holland has relatively solid stats: 10.3ppg, 1.5rpg and 1.3apg in the four games. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Despite Holland played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Holland used to play for Caciques de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Swingman Joel Jones (196-81, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Sacramento St., currently plays in Argentina) is a teammate of previously mentioned Daniel Santiago. But that was another game of his team in Argentinian LigaA which we would like to mention. Jones, who plays in the Argentinian LigaA couldn't help Boca Juniors (4-7) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance Boca Juniors (#6) was defeated 95-81 in Bahia Blanca by the higher-ranked Wuber-Est.Bahia (#5) in the South group. Jones scored 13 points, made 3 passes and 5 steals. Jones' overall stats this season are: 9.0ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.4apg and 1.3spg. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Despite Jones played previously for the USA national team, he is also a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team two years ago. Jones used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. International power forward Angel Alamo (206-85, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help the league outsider Guerreros (0-15) in their game against Gansos (3-14) in the Mexican LNBP (second division), despite his very good performance last Tuesday. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Alamo also added 7 rebounds in 24 minutes. But Guerreros was edged 87-85 by the much lower-ranked (#14) Gansos. So far Guerreros lost all fifteen games in the Regular Season. Alamo belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #9 with 19.1ppg. This year he also averages: 7.2rpg and 1.5spg in the 14 games. Alamo also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Despite he played previously for the USA national team, Alamo is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. He used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

Point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Toros' victory against the tenth-ranked Fuerza Regia (8-8) 72-65 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Tuesday night's game. He recorded 13 points in 22 minutes. Toros Nuevo Laredo (14-2) is placed second in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Pagan has reliable stats this year: 11.5ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.8apg in the four games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite Pagan played previously for the USA national team, he is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. Pagan used to play for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Former international center Jeffrion Aubry (205-76, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Cornell, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help Halcones Rojos (12-5) in their game against Halcones UV Xalapa (16-1) in the Mexican LNBP (second division), despite his good performance on Tuesday night. Aubry recorded 10 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks in 26 minutes. But Halcones Rojos lost 73-79 in Xalapa to the leading Halcones UV. Aubry belongs to league's best blockers and is ranked #4 with 1.4bpg. This year his other stats are: 6.8ppg and 5.6rpg in the 17 games. Aubry holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite he played previously for the USA national team, Aubry is currently in the Puerto Rican national team roster. He used to play for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

   #10. Guard Javier Mojica (190-84, another player represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Quimsa (6-6) in their game against Olimpico de La Banda (9-4) in the Argentinian LigaA, despite his good performance last Sunday. Mojica scored 12 points in 32 minutes. But Quimsa (#5) lost 67-75 in La Banda to the second-ranked Olimpico de in the North group. . This year Mojica's overall stats are: 8.8ppg and 2.2rpg in the five games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Despite Mojica played previously for the USA national team, he is also an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster. Mojica used to play for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

   #11. International power forward Angel Garcia (209-88, college: Memphis, currently plays in Japan) couldn't help Toyama Grouses in their game against Sendai 89ers in the Japanese BJ League. Despite his good performance last Sunday Garcia recorded a double-double by scoring 11 points and getting the same number of rebounds. Garcia's total stats this season are: 9.3ppg, 9.2rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3bpg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team earlier this year.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Ricardo Melendez (179-PG-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) led Panteras to a victory over the ninth-ranked Huracanes (8-7) 102-88 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Thursday. Melendez was MVP of the game. He scored 37 points (!!!), grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists. Panteras de Aguascalientes (10-7) is placed fifth in the LNBP. Melendez belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #4. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Melendez averages: 23.5ppg, 2.9rpg, 2.6apg and 1.1spg.

   #2. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Poland), who plays in the Polish TBL could not help Stelmet ZG (3-1) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Stelmet ZG was edged 73-70 on the road by the second-ranked Asseco Prokom Gdynia. Hodge was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 4 steals in 34 minutes. It was Stelmet ZG's first loss after three consecutive victories. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Hodge belongs to league's top scorers (ranked #3) and also on the list of best passers (first place). He has very impressive stats this year: 19.5ppg, 2.5rpg, 6.8apg and 2.0spg in the four games he played so far. Hodge has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican. Despite his Puerto Rican passport, Hodge currently plays for the U.S. Virgin Islands national team and is not eligible to play for the Puerto Rican team.

   #3. Javier Gonzalez (182-PG-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Czech Republic) was the major contributor in a BC Kolin's victory against the 11th-ranked B&W Opava (2-5) 80-74 in the Czech Republic NBL in Wednesday night's game. He recorded 21 points, 5 assists and 5 steals; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Gonzalez's second season in pro basketball. BC Kolin (5-2) is placed third in the NBL. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Gonzalez belongs to league's best passers (ranked #7) and also on the list of most steals (first place). He has very reliable stats this season: 11.7ppg, 2.1rpg, 3.9apg and 2.9spg.

   #4. TreVon Hughes (183-PG-87, agency: Edge Sports, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Baltic League) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Valmiera (2-1) crushing them 100-75 in the Baltic League on Friday night. He scored 11 points. It was the game of the round between two top 2 ranked teams in group D. Pieno Zvaigzdes Pasvalys (2-0) is placed first. This season Hughes has relatively solid stats: 14.0ppg, 2.5rpg, 1.5apg and 4.0spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Strangely Hughes has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #5. Paul Graham (192-G-85, college: Florida Atlantic, currently plays in Romania) contributed to an overtime Gaz Metan's victory against the closely-ranked CSM Bucuresti (2-2) 94-88 in the Romanian Division A on Sunday night. Graham recorded 15 points. CS Gaz Metan Medias (3-1) is placed sixth in the Division A. . Graham has reliable stats this season: 11.3ppg and 1.5rpg. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Graham used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Ivan Aska (200-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in Belgium), who plays in the Belgian Ethias League was not able to help Leuven Bears (1-2) in their last game on Friday. Despite his good performance Leuven Bears was defeated 89-81 in Aalst by the leading Okapi ar. Aska recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 10 rebounds. Aska is currently seventh on the list of top scorers and also on the list of best rebounders (first place). This season he has very high stats. Aska averages: 16.0ppg and 8.0rpg. He also holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican. Despite Aska's Puerto Rican nationality, he currently plays for the U.S. Virgin Islands national team and cannot be called to the Puerto Rican team.

   #7. Donald Copeland (177-PG-84, college: Seton Hall, currently plays in Hungary) was the main contributor in a ZTE KK's victory against the closely-ranked Kormend 101-92 in the Hungarian A Division in Saturday night's game. Copeland was the best player in that game. He recorded a double-double by scoring 19 points and making 10 passes. It was his first game for ZTE KK this season. Copeland holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. Carlos Rivera (187-PG-83, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to a Halcones Rojos' victory against the closely-ranked Abejas 77-63 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Saturday night. He scored 8 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Rivera averaged so far 11.4ppg, 3.9rpg, 3.5apg and 1.6spg.

   #9. Ramon Clemente (200-PF-85, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) helped Ironi Nahariya win their game against the league outsider Maccabi K/G crushing them 100-72 in the Israeli National League (second division) in Tuesday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Clemente had a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 29 minutes. It was his first game for Ironi Nahariya this season. Clemente holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #10. Jesus Mora (191-G-86, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Ricardo Melendez and both played together in the last Mexican LNBP game. Mora managed to help Panteras de Aguascalientes in a victory against the ninth-ranked Huracanes 102-88. He scored only 4 points in 3 minutes on the court. This year Mora averages just 3.5ppg in the 10 games. He has also Mexican nationality. Worth to mention Mora played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball.

Hapoel Haifa (Artzit) landed 29-year old Puerto Rican international swingman David Huertas (195-89kg-87, college: Mississippi). He played in the summer at Capitanes de Arecibo in Puerto Rican BSN league. In 41 games he averaged 13.5ppg, 3.5rpg and 3.0apg. Huertas helped them to win the league title. It was a very successful season in his career as he was selected to Latinbasket.com All-Puerto Rican BSN Honorable Mention. Baloncesto Superior Nacional announced that the 2017 season starts on Thursday, April 6 and ends by August 6. The board of directors met last Wednesday to approve the date of next season and talk about the current situacion of the teams and the league. BSN is expected to announce more news about the 2017 season on their next meeting scheduled on September 14. Michelin Etha Engomis Nicosia (Division A) agreed terms with 23-year old American (has also Puerto Rican passport) forward Christopher Ortiz (203-102kg-93). Ortiz just graduated from Kent State University (NCAA). He has played there for the last four years. In 32 games he had 7.8ppg and 5.5rpg last season. As mentioned above Ortiz is just out of the college and it will be his first season as a pro.
