We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Jose Juan Barea

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Jose Juan Barea (181-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA). He led Minnesota Timberwolves to a victory over the Sacramento Kings (2-4) 92-80 in the NBA in Friday night's game. Barea was MVP of the game. He recorded 21 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists (made all of his eight free throws) in 28 minutes on the court. The Minnesota Timberwolves have 4-1 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Barea has relatively good stats this year: 9.3ppg, 2.5rpg, 4.3apg, 2FGP: 52.6%, 3FGP: 25.0% and FT: 91.7% in the four games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Alexander Galindo

   #2. Second place goes to an international forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Uruguay), who plays in the Uruguayan LUB. He could not help Malvin (13-1) in their last game. Despite Galindo's very good performance the first-placed Malvin lost 71-75 in a derby game to the lower-ranked (#4) Union Atletica in the Capital group. He was the top scorer with 22 points. Galindo also added 4 rebounds in 36 minutes. It's Galindo's first season with the team. He has individually a very good year with high stats. Galindo averages: 16.5ppg, 5.3rpg, 2FGP: 54.5%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 79.6% in the 11 games. He is in the roster of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

John Holland

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman John Holland (195-88, college: Boston U., currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB. Holland was not able to help Cajasol (1-5) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Cajasol lost 73-82 at home to the much higher-ranked (#3) Valencia Basket. Holland was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 6 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 35 minutes; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Holland's second season in pro basketball. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Holland has relatively solid stats: 12.2ppg, 2.2rpg, 1.5apg, 2FGP: 58.8%(20-34), 3FGP: 32.0% and FT: 75.0% in the six games. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Holland played for the Puerto Rican national team one years ago. He used to play for Caciques de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

Andres Rodriguez

   #4. Point guard Andres Rodriguez (184-81, college: American, currently plays in Spain), who plays in the Spanish ACB was not able to secure a victory for Blusens Monbus (4-2) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Rodriguez's good performance Blusens Monbus was badly defeated 76-58 on the road by the lower-ranked CAI Zaragoza (#12). He was the second best scorer with 10 points. Rodriguez also added 3 passes. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. Rodriguez is currently first on the league's list of best passers. His overall stats this season are: 7.7ppg, 2.7rpg and 6.3apg. Rodriguez is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #5. Former international swingman Angel Luis Figueroa (196-81, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Dowling, currently plays in Uruguay) was the main contributor in Cordon's victory against the 15th-ranked Larre Borges (4-12) 79-71 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB on Thursday night. He was the best player in that game. Figueroa had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 12 rebounds. He also added and 3 steals in 39 minutes. Atletico Cordon (4-11) is placed 14th in Capital group. Figueroa has very impressive stats this year: 24.3ppg, 10.0rpg, 1.8apg and 2.8spg in the four games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team five years ago.

   #6. Power forward Angel Garcia (209-88, college: Memphis, currently plays in Japan), who plays in the Japanese BJ League couldn't help Toyama Grouses (6-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Toyama Grouses (#3) lost 87-95 on their home court in Toyama to the leading Iwate Big Bulls in the Eastern group. Garcia was the top scorer with 23 points. He also added 5 rebounds in 25 minutes; not bad, considering it's only Garcia's third season in pro basketball.They ended the series of three consecutive victories. Garcia has reliable stats this year: 14.4ppg, 8.7rpg, 2.5apg and 1.2spg in the 10 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

   #7. International power forward Angel Alamo (206-85, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Guerreros' victory against the league outsider Osos (2-19) 98-91 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. Alamo was the top player that evening. He scored 26 points (!!!) and grabbed 5 rebounds. Guerreros de Guerroro Cumple (0-15) is placed fourth in the LNBP. This season Alamo has very high stats. He averages: 19.4ppg, 7.3rpg, 1.1apg and 1.6spg. Alamo is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. Alamo played also for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. An experienced center Daniel Santiago (216-76, agency: Priority Sports, college: N.Mexico, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA couldn't help Boca Juniors (5-9) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Boca Juniors lost 80-85 in Comodoro R. to the higher-ranked (#7) GECR Indalo. Santiago was the second best scorer with 17 points. He also added 4 rebounds in 27 minutes. Santiago's stats this year are: 10.2ppg, 5.2rpg and 1.3apg in the 14 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Santiago plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. He used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

   #9. Former U21 international forward Gilberto Clavell (201-89, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Sam Houston St., currently plays in Finland), who plays in the Finnish Korisliiga couldn't help Kouvot (5-4) in their last game. Despite Clavell's very good performance Kouvot was crushed 88-65 in Salon by the lower-ranked (#9) Vilpas. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Clavell also added 8 rebounds in 22 minutes. Clavell is ranked sixth on the list of the top scorers in the league with 17.9ppg. This year his other stats are: 6.4rpg and 1.1apg in the nine games. Clavell used to play for the Puerto Rican U21 national team six years ago.

Point guard Filiberto Rivera (190-82, college: UTEP, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to a Halcones Rojos' victory against the 11th-ranked Correcaminos (7-14) 90-79 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Saturday night's game. Rivera scored 10 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 17 minutes. Halcones Rojos de Veracruz (16-5) is placed fourth in the LNBP. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. Rivera averaged so far 10.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg in the two games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

   #11. Former U18 international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-92, currently plays in NCAA1) helped Kansas St. win their game against the University of North Dakota crushing them 85-52 in the NCAA last Friday. Rodriguez recorded 13 points. Rodriguez averaged so far 10.5ppg, 3.0rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team two years ago.

   #12. International guard Javier Mojica (190-84, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Argentina) helped Quimsa win their game against the league leader Penarol 76-71 in the Argentinian LigaA on Friday night. Mojica recorded 8 points in 21 minutes. This year Mojica's overall stats are: 9.0ppg and 2.4rpg in the eight games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Mojica used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. He played also for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

   #13. Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Toros in their game against Soles in the Mexican LNBP (second division). Pagan scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was defeated 59-50. Pagan's total stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 2.3rpg and 3.7apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team ten years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #14. Former U19 international guard Nate Butler Lind (198-89, currently plays in NCAA1) managed to help Texas Christian University in a victory against the Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo 53-46 in the NCAA in Friday night's game. Butler Lind recorded 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 31 minutes. He has very impressive stats this year: 22.7ppg, 10.3rpg, 1.7apg and 2.7spg in the three games. Butler Lind used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2007.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Maurice Harkless (203-G/F-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA could not help the Orlando Magic (2-3) to beat the Minnesota Timberwolves (4-1). Harkless scored 7 points, had 5 rebounds and made 2 blocks. The Orlando Magic was defeated 90-75 on the road by the Timberwolves. It was Magic's third consecutive loss in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. This year Harkless averages: 3.5ppg, 4.0rpg, 2.0bpg and 2.0spg. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #2. Ricardo Melendez (179-PG-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) led Panteras to a victory over the league leader Halcones UV Xalapa (19-2) 95-91 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Thursday night's game. Melendez was the best player in that game. He scored 32 points (!!!), made 9 passes and 3 steals. Panteras de Aguascalientes (14-7) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. Melendez is currently first on the list of top scorers. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Melendez averages: 25.0ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.9apg and 1.4spg.

   #3. Paul Graham (192-G-85, college: Florida Atlantic, currently plays in Romania) was the major contributor in a Gaz Metan's victory against the closely-ranked U-Mobitelco (5-2) 92-80 in the Romanian Division A last Friday. He scored 17 points and added 3 passes in 27 minutes. CS Gaz Metan Medias (6-2) is placed second in the Division A. This year Graham has relatively solid stats: 11.6ppg, 1.8rpg and 2.1apg in the eight games he played so far. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Graham used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Eurocup), who plays in Poland was not able to help Stelmet ZG (0-1) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite his very good performance Stelmet ZG was defeated 74-67 at home by the second-ranked Unics Kazan. Hodge was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 7 assists. It was his first game for Stelmet ZG this season. Hodge belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #4. He has both U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican nationalities.

   #5. TreVon Hughes (183-PG-87, agency: Edge Sports, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Baltic League) contributed to an easy victory against the third-ranked Valmiera (2-3) crushing them 89-60 in the Baltic League in Saturday night's game. Hughes recorded 11 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Pieno Zvaigzdes Pasvalys (3-0) is placed first in group D. So far his team won all three games in the Regular Season. Hughes has reliable stats this season: 13.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 2.0apg and 4.0spg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Strangely Hughes has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Donald Copeland (177-PG-84, college: Seton Hall, currently plays in Hungary) was the main contributor in a ZTE KK's victory against the league outsider FS Debrecen 88-78 in the Hungarian A Division last Saturday. Copeland was the top player that evening. He scored 22 points, made 8 passes and 4 steals. This season Copeland has very high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 8.0apg and 3.0spg. Copeland holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Devon Collier (203-F, currently plays in NCAA1) contributed to an easy victory against the Niagara University 102-83 in the NCAA in Friday night's game. He recorded 14 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Collier's overall stats this season are:, 6.4rpg and 1.1apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Strangely Collier has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #8. Ivan Aska (200-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in Belgium), who plays in the Belgian Ethias League was not able to secure a victory for Leuven Bears (1-4) in their last game. Despite his good performance Leuven Bears was edged 87-84 in Verviers by the league outsider (#8) VOO -Pepinster. Aska had a double-double by scoring 10 points and getting the same number of rebounds. He also added 4 assists and 2 blocks in 35 minutes. Aska is currently fourth on the league's list of best rebounders with 7.0rpg. This year he also averages: 13.2ppg, 1.6apg and 1.2spg in the five games. Aska holds both U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican passports.

   #9. Javier Gonzalez (182-PG-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Czech Republic) couldn't help BC Kolin in their game against BK Prostejov in the Czech Republic NBL. He recorded 9 points. His team was defeated 82-78. Gonzalez is ranked first on the list of the most steals in the league. He has very reliable stats this season: 11.8ppg, 2.8rpg, 3.8apg and 2.7spg.

   #10. Ramon Clemente (200-PF-85, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) contributed to an Ironi Nahariya's victory against one of league's weakest teams Beer Yaakov 106-96 in the Israeli National League (second division) last Tuesday. Clemente recorded 18 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 32 minutes. Clemente is the league's top scorer and also on the list of most steals (third place). He has very impressive stats this year: 22.7ppg, 10.3rpg, 1.7apg and 2.7spg in the three games. Clemente holds both American and Puerto Rican passports.
