We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Jose Juan Barea (181-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA). Barea led Minnesota Timberwolves to a victory against the Milwaukee Bucks (9-9) 95-85 in the NBA last Friday. He recorded 15 points and added 5 assists. The Minnesota Timberwolves have 9-9 record this season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Barea has relatively good stats this year: 9.0ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.5apg, 2FGP: 49.2%, 3FGP: 29.7% and FT: 85.7%. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international center Peter John Ramos (222-85, currently plays in China). Ramos led Zhejiang Guangsha Lions to a victory over one of league's weakest teams Foshan (2-4) 111-98 in the Chinese CBA in Wednesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Ramos recorded a double-double by scoring 32 points and getting 15 rebounds (was perfect 8-for-8 from the free throw line). Zhejiang Guangsha Lions (2-4) are placed 13th in the CBA. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Ramos is currently third on the list of best rebounders. He has individually a very good season with high stats. Ramos averages: 23.6ppg, 13.8rpg, 1.6apg, 1.2bpg, 2FGP: 74.6%(50-67). He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Ramos is in the roster of the Puerto Rican senior national team. He used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Ricardo Sanchez (212-87, currently plays in Argentina). Sanchez was the major contributor in a Libertad Sunchales' victory against the closely-ranked Atenas (11-10) crushing them 88-66 in the Argentinian LigaA last Sunday. He had a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting the same number of rebounds in 32 minutes. Libertad Sunchales (13-7) is placed fifth in the LigaA. It's Sanchez's first season with the team. Sanchez is currently sixth on the list of best rebounders with 8.0rpg. This year he also averages: 12.0ppg, 1.4apg, 2FGP: 48.4%, 3FGP: 36.6% and FT: 82.2% in the 12 games he played so far. Sanchez is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

   #4. An experienced center Daniel Santiago (216-76, agency: Priority Sports, college: N.Mexico, currently plays in Argentina) was the main contributor in an Boca Juniors' victory against the 14th-ranked 9 de Julio (7-15) 78-74 in the Argentinian LigaA last Saturday. He was the best player in that game. Santiago recorded 22 points, 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. Aerochaco Boca Juniors Capital Feder (10-11) is placed ninth in the LigaA. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Santiago has relatively solid stats: 11.1ppg and 5.9rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Santiago is also Puerto Rican national team player. He used to play for Vaqueros de Bayamon in Puerto Rican league.

International swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to a 2-point Panteras' victory against the closely-ranked Fuerza Regia (16-13) 92-90 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Friday night. Huertas scored 25 points in 35 minutes. Panteras de Aguascalientes (21-8) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. Huertas has very impressive stats this year: 23.4ppg, 3.3rpg and 2.1apg in the seven games. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #6. Guard Raymond Cintron Cortes (183-90, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA could not help the Middle Tenn.St. (1-0) in their last game on Sunday. Despite Cintron Cortes' very good performance the Middle Tenn.St. (#28) was defeated in an overtime 82-77 on the road by the The University of Akron. He scored 22 points and added 3 passes. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This season Cintron Cortes has very high stats. He averages: 23.4ppg, 3.3rpg and 2.1apg. Cintron Cortes is a former U19 international player as he played for the Puerto Rican team three years ago.

Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to an easy victory against the tenth-ranked Barreteros (12-17) 100-84 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Friday. He had a double-double by scoring 16 points and making 12 passes. Pagan also added 6 rebounds in 28 minutes. Toros Nuevo Laredo (22-7) is placed third in the LNBP. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Pagan has reliable stats this year: 10.4ppg, 2.7rpg and 4.0apg in the 17 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team ten years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Guard Javier Mojica (190-84, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Argentina) contributed to Quimsa's victory against the closely-ranked Olimpico de La Banda (14-9) 85-71 in the Argentinian LigaA on Sunday night. Mojica recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 10 rebounds. He also added 3 assists. Asociacion Quimsa Santiago del Estero (13-9) is placed sixth in the LigaA. Mojica's overall stats this season are: 9.9ppg, 3.0rpg and 1.4apg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Mojica used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. He played also for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

International power forward Angel Alamo (206-85, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) was not able to help the league outsider Guerreros (0-15) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Guerreros lost 97-110 at home to the much lower-ranked (#11) Correcaminos. Alamo was the top scorer with 27 points. He also added 2 shots in 40 minutes. So far Guerreros lost all fifteen games in the Regular Season. Alamo belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #5 with 21.2ppg. This year his other stats are: 6.9rpg, 1.3apg and 1.5spg in the 26 games. Alamo holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team last year. Alamo played also for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

Point guard Filiberto Rivera (190-82, college: UTEP, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Pioneros (19-10) crushing them 105-81 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Saturday. He recorded 15 points in 23 minutes. Halcones Rojos de Veracruz (22-7) is placed fourth in the LNBP. Rivera's stats this year are: 10.8ppg, 3.4rpg, 2.0apg and 1.1spg in the eight games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

   #11. Former U21 international forward Gilberto Clavell (201-89, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Sam Houston St., currently plays in Finland), who plays in the Finnish Korisliiga was not able to secure a victory for Kouvot (6-8) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Kouvot was badly defeated 92-72 on their home court in Kouvola by the second-ranked Loimaan Korikonkarit. Clavell was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. Clavell is currently fourth on the league's list of top scorers with 19.0ppg. He also averaged so far 5.6rpg in the 14 games. Clavell used to play for the Puerto Rican U21 national team six years ago.

   #12. Former international swingman Angel Luis Figueroa (196-81, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Dowling, currently plays in Uruguay) contributed to Cordon's surprising victory against the second-ranked Malvin 88-84 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB last Saturday. He scored 18 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 3 assists. This season Figueroa has very high stats. He averages: 20.8ppg, 6.9rpg, 2.2apg and 1.8spg. Figueroa used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2007.

   #13. International power forward Angel Garcia (209-88, college: Memphis, currently plays in Japan) contributed to an easy victory against the sixth-ranked Yokohama BC crushing them 91-70 in the Japanese BJ League on Sunday night. He scored 12 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 27 minutes. Garcia has very impressive stats this year: 15.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.1bpg and 1.1spg in the 17 games. He is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #14. Former U19 international point guard Alex Abreu (180-91, currently studies in the States) faced previously mentioned Raymond Cintron Cortes in the NCAA last game. Abreu contributed to an overtime Akron's victory against the Middle Tennessee State University 82-77. He scored 19 points, had 4 boards, dished 7 assists and stole 4 balls. This season Abreu has very high stats. He averages: 15.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.1bpg and 1.1spg. Abreu used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2010.

   #15. Former U18 international guard Michael Alvarado (188-92, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Manhattan (0-1) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Manhattan lost 58-62 in Poughkeepsie, NY to the Marist College. Alvarado scored 19 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 29 minutes. He has very impressive stats this year: 15.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.1bpg and 1.1spg in the 17 games. Alvarado used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Poland), who plays in the Polish TBL could not help Stelmet ZG (6-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Stelmet ZG lost 84-99 at home to the leading PGE Turow. Hodge was the top scorer with 35 points. He also added 6 rebounds, 8 assists and made 2 blocks in 37 minutes. Hodge is the league's top scorer and also on the list of best passers (second place). He has individually a very good year with high stats. Hodge averages: 19.6ppg, 2.7rpg, 5.4apg and 3.0spg in the 10 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Ricardo Melendez (179-PG-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) led Panteras to a 2-point victory over the closely-ranked Fuerza Regia (16-13) 92-90 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Friday night. Melendez was MVP of the game. He scored 44 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds in 36 minutes. Panteras de Aguascalientes (21-8) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's seventh consecutive victory in a row. Melendez is currently second on the league's list of top scorers with 26.2ppg. This year his other stats are: 2.6rpg, 2.7apg and 1.3spg in the 29 games.

   #3. Paul Graham (192-G-85, agency: Beo Basket, college: Florida Atlantic, currently plays in Romania), who plays in the Romanian Division A was not able to help Gaz Metan (7-4) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Gaz Metan was defeated in an overtime 98-93 on their home court in Medias by the lower-ranked CSU Sibiu (#10). Graham was the second best scorer with 21 points. This season Graham has relatively solid stats: 12.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 2.4apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Graham used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Maurice Harkless (203-G/F-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) was not able to secure a victory for the Orlando Magic (7-12) in their game against the Brooklyn Nets (11-7) in the NBA. He recorded 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 28 minutes. The Orlando Magic lost 86-98 on the road to the Nets. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Harkless' overall stats are: 3.9ppg and 4.1rpg in the 16 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #5. TreVon Hughes (183-PG-87, agency: Edge Sports, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Baltic League) was the major contributor in a Pieno Zvaigzdes' victory against the fifth-ranked LSU-Baltai (0-7) crushing them 92-71 in the Baltic League in Saturday night's game. Hughes scored 13 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 22 minutes. Pieno Zvaigzdes Pasvalys (7-0) is placed first in group D. So far his team won all seven games in the Regular Season. They will play only one more game in the Baltic League Regular Season. And that game will be critical. Hughes is ranked first on the list of the most steals in the league with 3.0spg. He also averaged so far 14.4ppg, 4.3rpg and 2.6apg in the seven games. Hughes also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Donald Copeland (177-PG-84, college: Seton Hall, currently plays in Hungary) led ZTE KK to an overtime victory over the closely-ranked Jaszberenyi 91-89 in the Hungarian A Division last Saturday. Copeland was the top player that evening. He recorded 24 points and added 5 passes. Copeland is ranked first on the list of the best passers in the league. This season he has very high stats. Copeland averages: 18.4ppg, 3.4rpg, 6.3apg and 1.7spg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Copeland used to play for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Ivan Aska (200-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in Belgium) led Leuven Bears to a victory against the closely-ranked Liege Basket 85-75 in the Belgian Ethias League in Thursday night's game. He scored 18 points, grabbed 7 boards, handed out 4 passes and blocked 2 shots. Aska is ranked ninth on the list of the top scorers in the league and also on the list of best rebounders (fifth place). He has very reliable stats this season: 14.0ppg, 6.6rpg, 1.9apg and 1.5spg. Aska has dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #8. Kennel Sanchez (195-G/F-83, college: Drexel, currently plays in Argentina), who plays in the Argentinian LigaA couldn't help Argentino (11-11) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Sanchez's good performance Argentino was crushed 87-64 in Buenos Aires by the one of league's weakest teams Obras (#15). He was the second best scorer with 13 points. Sanchez also added 4 rebounds. Sanchez's overall stats this season are: 6.5ppg and 3.0rpg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Sanchez used to play for Grises de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

   #9. Gaby Belardo (188-G-89, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the FIU (1-1) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance the FIU (#30) was defeated 79-68 on their home court in Miami, FL by the University of South Alabama. Belardo scored 14 points and added 4 assists. This season he has very high stats. Belardo averages: 15.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.1bpg and 1.1spg.

   #10. Devon Collier (203-F, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the Oregon St. in their game against the University of Kansas in the NCAA, despite his good performance on Friday night. He recorded 12 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 27 minutes. But his team lost 78-84. Collier has very impressive stats this year: 15.8ppg, 8.4rpg, 2.2apg, 1.1bpg and 1.1spg in the 17 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Strangely Collier has never played in Puerto Rico.

Denzel Bowles (ex Ponce) signs at Al Naser !! - 2 days ago

Al Naser Dubai (D1) landed 27-year old American power forward Denzel Bowles (208-116kg-89, college: JMU). He played in the summer at Ponce in Puerto Rican BSN league. Bowles managed to play in three leagues in three countries last year (!!!). In 16 BSN games he averaged 14.5ppg, 7.5rpg, 2.8apg and 1.6bpg. Part of last season he spent at Purefoods Star in PBA where in 5 games he had very impressive stats: 26.4ppg, 13.2rpg, 3.2apg and 2.2bpg. London Lightning (NBL Canada) inked 25-year old American guard Kendall Williams (193-84kg-91, college: N.Mexico). He played in the summer at Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican BSN league. In 7 games he averaged just 2.9ppg and 2.1apg. Part of last season Williams spent at Nuernberg Falcons BC in ProA where in three games he had 5.0ppg, 2.0rpg, 1.3apg and 1.3spg. Champville (Pepsi LBL) signed 32-year old American swingman Brandon Thomas (198-94kg-84, college: Massachusetts, agency: Three Eye Sports). It is actually his comeback to Dik El Mehdi as he has played here before. Thomas played last summer at Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican BSN league. He managed to play in three leagues in three countries last year. In 15 BSN games he had 12.4ppg, 3.3rpg, 3.2apg and 1.7spg.
