Confusing situation between Forbes and Atleticos clarified by the league: - Jan 9, 2013

Gary Forbes

The situation between Atleticos de San German and forward Gary Forbes (201-G/F-85, college: Virginia) took an interesting twist in less than 24 hours after the team announced the signing.

After the announcement was published here, his agents Giovanni Funiciello and Gennaro Bizzarro sent letters saying that Forbes hasn't signed with San German.

Funiciello said in the letter: "There is NO truth at all that he will be playing in Puerto Rico this season. There is no contractual agreement that was ever reached."

He added: "This posting is causing some major issues with NBA teams that we are currently in discussion with."

Forbes is currently playing in China for Zhejiang Guangsha Lions where he averages 30.7 points and 8.5 rebounds. Since he has posted some great numbers this confirms that NBA teams are interested in him after he finishes up in China.

Meanwhile Bizzarro, who also represents Forbes and is a partner of Funiciello, said: "That is a complete fabrication. I don't know who your source is, but neither I nor Gary has ever spoken to that team or to any other team in Puerto Rico for that matter."

It gets better and even more confusing when Ray Rivera, of Become Legendary Basketball Agency (based in Puerto Rico), confirmed that there were negotiations and almost had an agreement.

"Yes, we talked and we almost reached an agreement. A couple of days ago Gary Forbes decided not to sign with San German, everything was cancelled, we informed Edwin Mundo," said Rivera.

Atleticos owner Edwin Mundo said that he has a signed contract not only by Forbes, but also by his agents. The contract has a clause in which he can be granted a release in case he gets an offer from the NBA.

The controversy was put to rest by BSN Tournament Director, Fernando Quiones, who said: "I have a contract signed by Gary Forbes and it was submitted to the league by Atleticos. I don't know what the controversy is."
