We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Jose Juan Barea

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Jose Juan Barea (181-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA), who plays in the NBA. He could not help the Minnesota Timberwolves (16-20) in their last game. Despite Barea's very good performance the Minnesota Timberwolves lost 98-113 on the road to the Dallas Mavericks. He was the top scorer with 21 points. Barea also added 5 assists (went 5 for 5 at the free throw line) in 26 minutes on the court. It was Timberwolves' fifth consecutive loss in a row. Barea has relatively good stats this year: 11.0ppg, 3.1rpg, 4.4apg, 2FGP: 43.6%, 3FGP: 33.0% and FT: 84.1% in the 29 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Carlos Arroyo

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international guard Carlos Arroyo (188-79, agency: Interperformances, college: FIU, currently plays in Eurocup). Arroyo was the major contributor in Galatasaray's victory against the leader Zvezda (1-1) 91-74 in the Eurocup on Wednesday night. He scored 19 points in 32 minutes. Galatasaray Medical Park Istanbul (1-1) is placed third in group L. There are only four games left until the end of the Eurocup Top 16. So now every game will be critical. It's Arroyo's first season with the team. This year Arroyo has relatively solid stats: 10.5ppg, 3.5rpg, 3.0apg, 2FGP: 27.3%, 3FGP: 55.6% in the two games. Former Cangrejeros Santurce starter played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2011.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international center Peter John Ramos (222-85, currently plays in China), who plays in the Chinese CBA. He was not able to help Zhejiang Guangsha Lions (13-10) in their last game. Despite Ramos' very good performance Zhejiang Guangsha Lions lost 119-129 on the opponent's court to the lower-ranked (#12) Foshan. He had a double-double by scoring 27 points and getting 16 rebounds in 41 minutes. Ramos has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 22.3ppg, 11.6rpg, 1.6apg, 2FGP: 65.1%(218-335) and FT: 63.4% in the 23 games. Ramos has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. He is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team. Ramos used to play for Criollos de Caguas in Puerto Rican league.

David Huertas

   #4. Swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi, currently plays in Mexico) led Panteras to a victory over the 12th-ranked Lechugueros (12-28) 98-90 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Wednesday night. He was MVP of the game. Huertas scored 35 points (!!!) and grabbed 4 rebounds. Panteras de Aguascalientes (28-12) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Huertas is ranked third on the list of the top scorers in the league. This season he has very high stats. Huertas averages: 24.4ppg, 4.0rpg, 2.5apg and 1.2spg. He is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #5. International forward Alexander Galindo (200-85, college: FIU, currently plays in Uruguay), who plays in the Uruguayan LUB was not able to secure a victory for Malvin in their last game. Despite Galindo's very good performance the third-placed Malvin lost 83-89 in a derby game to the lower-ranked (#4) Bohemios in the Serie 1. He was the top scorer with 20 points. Galindo also added 4 rebounds in 28 minutes. Galindo has very impressive stats this year: 15.1ppg, 4.4rpg and 1.2apg in the 24 games. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #6. Swingman John Holland (195-88, college: Boston U., currently plays in Spain) contributed to Cajasol's victory against the tenth-ranked Unicaja Malaga (8-9) 81-70 in the Spanish ACB last Sunday. Holland scored 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Cajasol Banca Civica Sevilla (6-11) is placed 15th in the ACB. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Holland has reliable stats this season: 10.6ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.1apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Holland is a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team two years ago. He used to play for Caciques de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Former U19 international guard Isaac Sosa Carrion (190-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Canisius' victory against the Manhattan College (3-4) 64-60 in the NCAA on Thursday night. Sosa Carrion scored 25 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 38 minutes. The Canisius College has a solid 4-2 conference record this season. Sosa Carrion's stats this year are: 10.6ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.1apg in the 17 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team four years ago.

   #8. Center Ricardo Sanchez (212-87, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to an easy victory against the 11th-ranked Sionista (14-16) crushing them 91-68 in the Argentinian LigaA in Wednesday night's game. Sanchez scored 10 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Libertad Sunchales (17-11) is placed fifth in the LigaA. Sanchez belongs to league's best rebounders and is ranked #7. He has very reliable stats this season: 12.1ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.7apg. Sanchez plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #9. Former U18 international point guard Michael Alvarado (188-92, currently studies in the States) faced previously mentioned Isaac Sosa Carrion in the NCAA last game. Alvarado, who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams Manhattan (3-4) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the Manhattan lost 60-64 in Buffalo, NY to the Canisius College. Alvarado scored 18 points in 31 minutes. Alvarado has very impressive stats this year: 15.7ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.7apg and 1.7spg in the six games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team three years ago.

   #10. Forward Gilberto Clavell (201-89, agency: KMG Sports Management, college: Sam Houston St., currently plays in Finland) contributed to an Kouvot's surprising victory against Forssan Koripojat 84-69 in the Finnish Korisliiga in Saturday night's game. Clavell recorded a double-double by scoring 21 points and getting 13 rebounds; not bad, considering it's only his second season in pro basketball. Kouvot Kouvola (11-12) is placed seventh in the Korisliiga. Clavell belongs to league's top scorers and is ranked #4. This season he has very high stats. Clavell averages: 19.5ppg, 6.1rpg and 1.2apg. He is a former U21 international player as seven years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. Former U18 international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-92, is currently at the American university) contributed to a 1-point Kansas St.'s victory against the West Virginia University 65-64 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Rodriguez scored 9 points in 25 minutes. He averaged so far 12.6ppg, 3.9rpg and 3.2apg in the 10 games. Rodriguez used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team three years ago.

   #12. International guard Mike Rosario (190-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to an easy victory against the Texas A&M University crushing them 68-47 in the NCAA last Thursday. He scored 19 points and added 3 passes. Rosario's stats this season are: 12.6ppg, 3.9rpg and 3.2apg. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #13. International point guard Andres Rodriguez (184-81, college: American, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help Blusens Monbus in their game against FIATC Joventut in the Spanish ACB. Rodriguez cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only 2 points, made 7 passes and 3 steals. His team was edged 89-87. Rodriguez is the league's best passer. His overall stats this season are: 6.2ppg, 2.6rpg, 6.4apg and 1.1spg. Rodriguez is also Puerto Rican national team player.

   #14. Former U19 international forward Kevin Young (203-90, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Kansas' victory against the Texas Tech University 60-46 in the NCAA on Saturday night. He scored 14 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. This season Young has very high stats. He averages: 18.5ppg, 9.1rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg. Young used to play for the Puerto Rican U19 national team back in 2009.

   #15. Former international guard Kevin Hamilton (193-84, college: Holy Cross, currently plays in Germany) couldn't help BBC Bayreuth in their game against Bayern Muenchen in the German BBL. He recorded 5 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals in 27 minutes. His team lost 72-84. This year Hamilton's overall stats are: 5.5ppg, 3.4rpg, 3.8apg and 1.5spg in the eight games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Hamilton used to play for the Puerto Rican national team three years ago. He played also for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Poland) led Stelmet ZG to an overtime victory over the closely-ranked Trefl Sopot (11-6) 108-106 in the Polish TBL last Sunday. Hodge was MVP of the game. He recorded 29 points (!!!) and added 6 passes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Stelmet Zielona Gora (11-5) is placed second in the TBL. Hodge is currently first on the league's list of top scorers and also on the list of best passers (third place). He has individually a very good season with high stats. Hodge averages: 20.4ppg, 2.5rpg, 5.8apg and 2.3spg. He has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Ricardo Melendez (179-PG-83, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) led Panteras to a victory over the 12th-ranked Lechugueros (12-28) 94-85 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Tuesday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Melendez recorded 42 points (!!!) and added 5 assists. Panteras de Aguascalientes (28-12) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Melendez is currently second on the list of top scorers. This season he has very high stats. Melendez averages: 26.7ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.8apg and 1.2spg.

   #3. Donald Copeland (177-PG-84, college: Seton Hall, currently plays in Hungary) was the main contributor in a ZTE KK's victory against the closely-ranked Marso NYKK (7-10) 82-71 in the Hungarian A Division last Sunday. He was the best player in that game. Copeland recorded 29 points (!!!) and added 7 passes in 39 minutes. Zalakeramia-ZTE KK (7-8) is placed eighth in the A Division. Copeland belongs to league's best passers and is ranked #4 with 5.5apg. This year he also averages: 18.9ppg, 3.5rpg and 1.4spg in the 12 games he played so far. Copeland is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. He used to play for Gigantes de Carolina in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Florentino Valencia (198-F-85, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Toledo, currently plays in Mexico), who plays in the Mexican LNBP (second division) could not help Barreteros (17-23) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance Barreteros was defeated 90-85 at home by the lower-ranked Correcaminos (#11). Valencia was the top scorer with 27 points. He also added 6 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. This season Valencia has very high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg and 5.7rpg. Valencia has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Worth to mention Valencia played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He used to play for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. Experienced Darnell Hinson (186-PG-80, college: Northeastern St., currently plays in Austria), who plays in the Austrian A Bundesliga was not able to help Redwell Gunners Oberwart (7-9) in their last game. Despite Hinson's very good performance Redwell Gunners Oberwart was edged 90-89 on the road by the second-ranked Kapfenberg Bulls. He was the top scorer with 41 points. Hinson also added made 5 passes and 3 steals (was perfect 12-for-12 from the free throw line !!!) in 40 minutes. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Hinson has very impressive stats this year: 23.0ppg, 4.5rpg, 4.0apg and 2.0spg in the six games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Hinson used to play for Grises de Humacao in Puerto Rican league.

   #6. Emanuel Ubilla (188-G-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Czech Republic), who plays in the Czech Republic NBL was not able to secure a victory for BC Kolin (12-9) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance BC Kolin was badly defeated 94-75 in Pardubice by the higher-ranked BK Pardubice (#3). Ubilla was the second best scorer with 17 points. This season Ubilla has very high stats. He averages: 15.7ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.7apg and 1.7spg. Ubilla holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. best in steals with 2.6spg. This year he also averages: 12.6ppg, 3.9rpg and 3.2apg in the 10 games. Hughes holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #8. Devon Collier (203-F, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Oregon St. (0-4) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Collier's good performance the Oregon St. was defeated 80-70 on their home court in Corvallis, OR by the University of Arizona. He recorded a double-double by scoring 13 points and getting 15 rebounds. Collier also added 2 blocks. His stats this season are: 12.6ppg, 3.9rpg and 3.2apg. Collier holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #9. Maurice Harkless (203-G/F-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) couldn't help the Orlando Magic in their game against the Washington Wizards in the NBA. Harkless scored only 4 points in 11 minutes. His team was crushed by 29 points 120-91 in the NBA. This year his overall stats are: 3.8ppg and 3.3rpg in the 33 games. Harkless holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #10. Ramon Clemente (200-PF-85, agency: Global Sports Plaza, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Israel) was the major contributor in an Ironi Nahariya's victory against the closely-ranked Hod Hasharon 84-76 in the Israeli National League (second division) last Tuesday. He recorded 19 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 30 minutes. Clemente has very impressive stats this year: 18.5ppg, 9.1rpg, 1.5apg and 1.5spg in the 11 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Clemente used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

Aguada - Bayamon 104-82 Aguada rallied past Bayamon to draw things level at 2-2 in the series. The game without a history. Ferrocarril Oeste Capital Federal (LigaA) signed 31-year old Puerto Rican ex-international power forward Ramon Clemente (200-85, college: Wichita State). It is actually his comeback to Buenos Aires as he played here before. Clemente is a dual citizen owning also American passport. Bayamon - Aguada 92-79 Bayamon outgunned Aguada to take 2-1 lead in the semifinal series. The game was mostly controlled by Vaqueros. Santeros managed to win third quarter 24-22.
