Here is the weekly review of the top performing Puerto Rican players, who play currently abroad.


Carlos Rivera

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced former international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico). He led Fuerza Regia to a victory over the closely-ranked Toros (16-10) 86-73 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Friday night's game. Rivera was MVP of the game. He scored 23 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 26 minutes on the court. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (26-1) is placed first in the LNBP. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. It's Rivera's first season with the team. Rivera has relatively good stats this year: 13.9ppg, 3.3rpg, 5.0apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 55.5%(61-110), 3FGP: 51.7%(46-89) and FT: 84.9% in 24 games he played so far. Former Atleticos de San German starter played for the Puerto Rican senior national team two years ago.

Rasham Suarez

   #2. Second place goes to former U18 international guard Rasham Suarez (190-92, college: S.Mississippi, currently plays in Baltic League). He was the main contributor in Rapla's victory against the closely-ranked Liepaja/Triobet (4-6) 83-71 in the Baltic League last Tuesday. Suarez was the best player in that game. He recorded 21 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists; quite an impressive performance considering it's only Suarez's second season in pro basketball. AVIS Rapla (8-3) is placed second in the Baltic League. It was his team's fourth consecutive victory in a row. They will play only one more game in the Baltic League Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This season Suarez averages: 9.8ppg, 4.5rpg, 2.8apg, 2FGP: 45.2%, 3FGP: 28.1%. Former Guaynabo starter played for the Puerto Rican U18 national team in 2010.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was former international shooting guard Javier Mojica (190-84, agency: Paris Global Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Mexico). He contributed to Panteras' victory against the closely-ranked Soles (17-11) 84-80 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. Mojica was the top player that evening. He scored 24 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 26 minutes. Panteras de Aguascalientes (14-12) is placed fifth in the LNBP. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This year Mojica has relatively solid stats: 14.1ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.1apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 45.2%, 3FGP: 39.5% and FT: 77.4% in eight games. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Mojica played for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago. He used to play for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Guard Richard Chaney (196-84, college: Troy, currently plays in Uruguay) could not help Bigua (2-2) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Chaney's very good performance the fifth-placed Bigua (2-2) was defeated 86-80 in a derby game by the lower-ranked Trouville (#7) in the Promocional 1 group. He was the top scorer with 19 points. Chaney also added 9 rebounds, 3 assists and made 3 blocks. The Second Stage already ended. Chaney has reliable stats this season: 11.8ppg, 5.6rpg, 2.8apg, 1.1bpg and 1.7spg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Chaney is also Puerto Rican national team player. He used to play for Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #5. International swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) contributed to an easy victory against the Los Angeles Lakers (15-28) crushing them 108-87 in the NBA last Tuesday. Harkless recorded 14 points, 5 rebounds and 3 blocks in 32 minutes. The Portland Trail Blazers have 18-23 record this season. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. Harkless has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 12.0ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.2spg in 39 games. Harkless has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. Strangely Harkless has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Point guard Jose Juan Barea (183-84, college: Northeastern, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Dallas Mavericks in their game against the Atlanta Hawks (22-17) in the NBA. Barea recorded 7 points, 4 rebounds and 7 assists in 17 minutes. The Dallas Mavericks (12-27) lost 82-97 on the road to the Hawks. It was Mavericks' third consecutive loss in a row. Barea has very impressive stats this year: 12.1ppg, 3.0rpg and 5.2apg in 14 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster.

Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Toros (16-10) in their game against Garzas (15-11) in the Mexican LNBP (second division). Pagan recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in only 11 minutes. Toros lost 101-105 in Plata Hidalgo to the lower-ranked (#4) Garzas. It was Toros' fourth consecutive loss in a row. This year Pagan's overall stats are: 7.3ppg, 2.1rpg and 3.0apg in 19 games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team fifteen years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. Forward Willie Rodriguez (198-94, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Binghamton in their last game on Sunday. Despite Rodriguez's very good performance the Binghamton was defeated 79-75 in Lowell, MA by the University of Massachusetts - Lowell. He scored 23 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Rodriguez's stats this season are: 12.6ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.1bpg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Rodriguez used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2012. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

U18 international guard Leandro Allende (198-97, currently studies in the States) contributed to Citadel's victory against the Virginia Military Institute (0-1) 79-74 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Allende scored 21 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The The Citadel has 0-2 conference record this season. Allende's total stats this year are: 7.2ppg and 2.6rpg. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican U18 national team.

   #10. Guard Eliel Gonzalez (188-95, is currently at the American university), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the N.Carolina A&T in their last game. Despite Gonzalez's very good performance the N.Carolina A&T lost 88-99 in Princess Anne, MD to the Univ. of Maryland Eastern Shore. He recorded 21 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists (made all of his seven free throws) in 23 minutes. Gonzalez averaged so far 10.6ppg, 4.0rpg and 2.6apg in 14 games. He is a former U16 international player as six years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. International forward William Orozco (201-85, also represented by Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) contributed to Garzas' victory against the eighth-ranked Ciudad 86-78 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Thursday night. Orozco scored 10 points. Orozco's total stats this season are: 5.7ppg, 1.7rpg and 2.3apg. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #12. International point guard Javier Gonzalez (185-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Slovakia) contributed to a 2-point Iskra Svit's victory against the closely-ranked Levice 78-76 in the Slovakian SBL in Saturday night's game. He scored 10 points and added 4 assists in 38 minutes. Gonzalez averaged so far 13.9ppg, 3.0rpg, 4.5apg and 1.6spg in 11 games. Worth to mention Gonzalez played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #13. International power forward Chris Gaston (201-89, college: Fordham, currently plays in Israel) couldn't help Hapoel Migdal Haemek (7-7) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite Gaston's very good performance Hapoel Migdal Haemek was defeated 97-86 in Hod Hasharon by the lower-ranked Hasharon (#9). He was the top scorer with 26 points. Gaston also added 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists (was perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line !!!). This season Gaston has very high stats. He averages: 20.4ppg, 10.3rpg, 2.6apg, 2.1bpg and 1.4spg. Gaston holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He is also Puerto Rican national team player. Gaston used to play for Ponce in Puerto Rican league.

   #14. Former U18 international forward Christopher Ortiz (203-93, college: Kent St., currently plays in Cyprus) couldn't help one of league's weakest teams Etha (2-8) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his good performance the bottom-ranked Etha was defeated 71-62 in a derby game by the one of league's weakest teams Apoel (#5). Ortiz recorded 12 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Ortiz averaged so far 11.4ppg, 5.1rpg and 1.4apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Ortiz used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team back in 2010. He played also for Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

   #15. U18 international guard Jorge Pacheco (185-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) contributed to Liberty's victory against the Campbell University 61-54 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 37 minutes. This year Pacheco's total stats are: 7.1ppg, 2.9rpg and 2.0apg in 18 games. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican U18 national team.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in Basketball Champions League) could not help ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (9-3) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his good performance ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket was defeated 77-72 on the road by the lower-ranked Ventspils (#4) in the group C of Basketball Champions League. Hodge scored 10 points and had 3 steals. There are only two games left until the end of the Basketball Champions League Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Hodge's stats this season are: 13.7ppg, 2.7rpg and 5.6apg. He has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Ivan Aska (201-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in South Korea) was not able to help ET Land Elephants in their game against Goyang Orions (20-9) in the South Korean KBL, despite his very good performance in Thursday night's game. Aska was the top scorer with 23 points. He also added 7 rebounds in 28 minutes. But ET Land Elephants were edged 78-76 in Daegu by the higher-ranked (#3) Goyang Orions. Aska has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 16.0ppg, 5.9rpg and 1.1apg in seven games he played so far. Aska is another player who holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Jonathan Rodriguez (196-F-87, agency: DTMones, college: Campbell, currently plays in Uruguay) was not able to secure a victory for Cordon (0-4) in their game against Atletico Welcome (3-1) in the Uruguayan LUB. Despite his very good performance last Saturday He was the top scorer with 25 points. Rodriguez also added 8 rebounds and dished 3 assists. The Second Stage already ended. This season Rodriguez has very high stats. He averages: 22.7ppg, 5.0rpg and 3.0apg. Rodriguez has both Puerto Rican and Dominican Republic nationalities.

   #4. Gian Clavell (193-G-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Colorado St. to an easy victory against the U.S. Air Force Academy (0-2) crushing them 85-58 in the NCAA on Saturday night. He scored 28 points (!!!), grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 34 minutes. The Colorado State University has 1-1 conference record this season. Clavell has very impressive stats this year: 16.5ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.6apg and 1.5spg in eight games.

   #5. Joseph Soto (190-G-93, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help Soles (17-11) in their game against Panteras (14-12) in the Mexican LNBP (second division). Despite his very good performance in Thursday night's game He scored 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds (was perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line). Soto's overall stats this season are: 7.1ppg, 2.1rpg, 4.7apg and 1.1spg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and Mexican.

   #6. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Hungary) contributed to a ZTE KK's victory against the 11th-ranked Jaszberenyi 93-84 in the Hungarian A Division on Saturday night. Ubilla scored 7 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 10 assists. This season Ubilla has very high stats. He averages: 17.6ppg, 6.1rpg and 8.3apg. Ubilla holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Ruben Cotto (183-G-89, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Mexico) faced previously mentioned Joseph Soto in the Mexican LNBP last game. Cotto helped Panteras win their game against the closely-ranked Soles 84-80. He scored 7 points in 16 minutes. It was his first game for Panteras this season.

   #8. Kevin Maura (173-PG, currently studies in the States) led UMBC to a victory against the University of Maine 75-64 in the NCAA on Sunday night. He had a double-double by scoring 13 points and making 11 passes in 38 minutes. This year Maura's total stats are: 7.4ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.3apg and 1.9spg in 15 games.

   #9. Carlos DeJesus (180-G, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Bridgeport University win their game against the LIU Post 79-61 in the NCAA2 last Wednesday. DeJesus recorded 17 points in 28 minutes. This year DeJesus' total stats are: 9.5ppg, 1.4rpg, 1.4apg and 1.4spg in 14 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Interesting that DeJesus has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #10. Michael Sanchez (173-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams Concord University in their game against the Notre Dame College, OH in the NCAA2. Despite his very good performance on Sunday night He recorded 15 points and added 5 passes. Sanchez averaged so far 11.6ppg, 2.2rpg, 3.7apg and 1.8spg.

Courtney Fells (ex San German) joins Hapoel Galilee - 22 days ago
Hapoel Upper Galilee Safed (National League) added to their roster 31-year old American swingman Courtney Fells (196-93kg-86, college: North Carolina State). He played last summer at Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican BSN league, but left the team in May. In 16 games he had 10.9ppg, 4.1rpg, 2.4apg and 1.1spg.
