William Orozco's double-double lands him Player of the Week award among Puerto Ricans playing currently abroad: - Feb 18, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


William Orozco

   #1. This week's number one is an international forward William Orozco (201-85, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico). He led Garzas to a victory over the closely-ranked Barreteros (17-19) 100-86 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) in Wednesday night's game. Orozco was MVP of the game. He had a double-double by scoring 36 points and getting 19 rebounds. Orozco also added 3 assists and 4 blocks in 37 minutes on the court. Garzas de Plata Hidalgo (22-14) is placed fourth in the LNBP. It was his team's fifth consecutive victory in a row. This year Orozco averages: 10.0ppg, 5.5rpg, 1.7apg, 2FGP: 67.7%(44-65), 3FGP: 23.1% and FT: 78.1% in 14 games he played so far. He is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Ramon Clemente

   #2. Second place goes to an international power forward Ramon Clemente (200-85, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Argentina). Clemente was the main contributor in Ferrocarril's victory against the fourth-ranked GECR Indalo (16-18) 99-81 in the Argentinian LigaA last Monday. He was the best player in that game. Clemente scored 20 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Ferrocarril Oeste Capital Federal (21-11) is placed second in Sur group. Clemente has relatively good stats this season: 14.1ppg, 7.0rpg, 1.4apg, 2FGP: 64.0%(128-200), 3FGP: 43.2% and FT: 80.8%. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Clemente is in the roster of the Puerto Rican senior national team. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

Carlos Rivera

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an experienced former international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Mexico). Rivera contributed to a Fuerza Regia's victory against the eighth-ranked Santos (14-22) 84-80 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) on Tuesday night. He had a double-double by scoring 13 points and making 12 passes. Rivera also added 6 rebounds and 3 steals in 32 minutes. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (32-4) is placed first in the LNBP. This year Rivera has relatively solid stats: 13.4ppg, 3.1rpg, 5.2apg, 1.3spg, 2FGP: 58.2%(78-134), 3FGP: 51.0%(53-104) and FT: 84.3% in 30 games. Former Atleticos de San German starter played for the Puerto Rican national team two years ago.

   #4. Shooting guard Javier Mojica (190-84, also represented by Paris Global Sports, college: Cent.Conn.St., currently plays in Uruguay) could not help Defensor (4-7) in their last game on Tuesday. Despite his very good performance the seventh-placed Defensor (4-7) was defeated 90-81 in a derby game by the leading U Universitario in the Promocional 1 group. Mojica was the second best scorer with 18 points. He also added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. The Second Stage already ended. Mojica has reliable stats this season: 12.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.8apg. He is another player who holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Mojica used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2015. He played also for Fajardo in Puerto Rican league.

Maurice Harkless

   #5. International swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA) was not able to help the Portland Trail Blazers (23-32) in their last game on Monday. Despite Harkless' very good performance the Portland Trail Blazers (23-32) were defeated 109-104 on the road by the Atlanta Hawks. He scored 17 points, grabbed 9 rebounds and made 2 blocks. Harkless' stats this season are: 10.7ppg, 4.7rpg and 1.2spg. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Harkless plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #6. Point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) helped Toros win their game against the closely-ranked Panteras (19-17) 82-74 in the Mexican LNBP (second division) last Saturday. Pagan was the top player that evening. He scored 14 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 8 assists. Toros de Nuevo Laredo (22-14) is placed third in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Pagan's overall stats this season are: 8.0ppg, 2.0rpg and 3.3apg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Pagan is a former international player as he played for the Puerto Rican senior team fifteen years ago. He used to play for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

Alex Franklin

   #7. International swingman Alex Franklin (198-88, college: Siena, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Wilfredo Pagan. But that was another game of his team in Mexican LNBP which we would like to mention. Franklin helped Toros win their game against the closely-ranked Panteras (19-17) 70-54. He was the top player that evening. Franklin scored 18 points in a mere 19 minutes. Toros de Nuevo Laredo (22-14) is placed third in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Franklin's stats this year are: 12.5ppg and 2.5apg in two games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Franklin is also Puerto Rican national team player. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. Guard Jezreel De Jesus (185-91, agency: Interperformances, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to secure a victory for Atenas (11-20) in their last game on Sunday. Despite De Jesus' very good performance Atenas (#9) was edged 89-86 at home by the higher-ranked Quimsa (#4) in the Norte group. He was the second best scorer with 15 points. De Jesus also added 7 rebounds and dished 5 assists. De Jesus averaged so far 13.8ppg, 4.0rpg, 3.8apg and 1.5spg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2015.

International guard Richard Chaney (196-84, college: Troy, currently plays in Uruguay) helped Bigua win their game against the eighth-ranked Trouville (2-9) crushing them 90-69 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB last Tuesday. Chaney recorded 13 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals in 26 minutes. Atletico Bigua Montevideo (5-5) is placed fourth in Promocional 1 group. The Second Stage already ended. It's Chaney's first season with the team. He averaged so far 12.8ppg, 5.4rpg, 2.9apg and 1.6spg in 17 games. Chaney holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team. Chaney used to play for Cangrejeros de Santurce in Puerto Rican league.

   #10. Guard Rasham Suarez (190-92, college: S.Mississippi, currently plays in Estonia) helped Rapla win their game against the closely-ranked BC Rakvere (5-13) crushing them 91-61 in the Estonian Alexela KML in Wednesday night's game. He scored 8 points, grabbed 6 boards, passed 5 assists and added 3 steals in 25 minutes. AVIS Rapla (10-6) is placed fourth in the Alexela KML. They ended the series of four consecutive loses. Suarez averaged so far 10.1ppg, 3.4rpg, 2.3apg and 1.3spg in 15 games. He is a former U18 international player as seven years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. International point guard Shabazz Napier (185-91, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maurice Harkless. However that was another game of his team in NBA which brought him to that list. Napier couldn't help the Portland Trail Blazers in their game against the Utah Jazz. He recorded 8 points in only 12 minutes. His team were crushed by 23 points 111-88 in the NBA. This year Napier averages only 3.8ppg in 29 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Napier plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #12. International point guard Javier Gonzalez (185-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Slovakia) helped Iskra Svit win their game against the closely-ranked Lucenec 89-73 in the Slovakian SBL on Saturday night. He was the top player that evening. Gonzalez scored 17 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 8 assists. Gonzalez averaged so far 14.1ppg, 3.4rpg, 5.3apg and 1.6spg. Worth to mention Gonzalez played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.

   #13. Former U18 international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-92, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in France) couldn't help Cholet Basket in their game against Chalon/Saor in the French ProA. He recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. His team was defeated 79-66. Rodriguez averaged so far 10.7ppg, 2.6rpg, 2.9apg and 1.3spg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team seven years ago.

   #14. U18 international guard Jorge Pacheco (185-98, currently plays college basketball in the States) helped Liberty win their game against the Charleston Southern University 76-69 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He recorded 12 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists. Pacheco's overall stats this season are: 7.8ppg, 3.0rpg and 2.6apg. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican U18 national team.

   #15. Former U18 international forward Lonnie Rivera (198-97, currently studies in the States) helped American win their game against the U.S.Military Academy 61-58 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. He recorded 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 30 minutes. This year Rivera's overall stats are: 5.6ppg and 2.1rpg in 18 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team three years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Jonathan Rodriguez (196-F-87, agency: DTMones, college: Campbell, currently plays in Liga Americas) could not help Academia in their last game. Despite Rodriguez's very good performance his team lost 75-89 at home to the leading Cocodrilos. He was the top scorer with 23 points. Rodriguez also added 7 rebounds and dished 5 assists (went 7 for 7 at the free throw line) in 40 minutes. Rodriguez's stats this year are: 12.5ppg, 2.8rpg and 1.8apg in four games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and Dominican Republic.

   #2. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in France) was not able to help ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket in their game against Gravelines-Dunkerque (11-8) in the French ProA. Hodge recorded 7 points and added 6 assists in 33 minutes. ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket was edged 82-81 on the road by the higher-ranked (#5) Gravelines-Dunkerque. Hodge's stats this year are: 12.8ppg, 2.1rpg and 6.3apg in 19 games. He is another player who holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Alexis Colon (196-F/G, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Panteras (19-17) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance Panteras was defeated 82-74 in Nuevo Laredo by the higher-ranked Toros (#3). Colon scored 11 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 5 assists. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Colon's overall stats this season are: 8.8ppg, 5.2rpg and 2.8apg.

   #4. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Hungary) couldn't help ZTE KK (11-7) in their game against Kormend (12-6) in the Hungarian A Division. Despite his good performance last Sunday Ubilla scored 10 points, had 4 rebounds and dished 8 assists. Ubilla has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.9ppg, 5.9rpg, 8.1apg and 1.1spg. Ubilla has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. He used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. Ivan Aska (201-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in South Korea) couldn't help ET Land Elephants (18-22) in their game against Samsung Thunders (27-14) in the South Korean KBL, despite his good performance on Sunday night. Aska scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 32 minutes. But ET Land Elephants lost 72-79 in Seoul to the second-ranked Samsung Thunders. It was ET Land Elephants' fourth consecutive loss in a row. Aska has very impressive stats this year: 15.9ppg, 6.2rpg and 1.2apg in 17 games. He also holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #6. Gian Clavell (193-G-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Colorado St. to a victory against the University of Wyoming 78-73 in the NCAA in Tuesday night's game. Clavell recorded 20 points, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. This season Clavell has very high stats. He averages: 18.7ppg, 6.3rpg, 1.7apg and 1.7spg.

   #7. Ruben Cotto (183-G-89, college: St.Louis, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Alexis Colon and both played together in the last Mexican LNBP game. Cotto couldn't help Panteras in their game against Toros. He scored 9 points and added 4 assists in 22 minutes. His team lost 74-82. This year Cotto's overall stats are: 6.7ppg and 2.1apg in 10 games.

   #8. Kevin Maura (173-PG, currently studies in the States) couldn't help the UMBC in their game against the University of Vermont in the NCAA, despite his very good performance on Sunday night. Maura scored 22 points in 33 minutes. But his team was edged 77-74. This year Maura's overall stats are: 8.1ppg, 2.5rpg, 4.2apg and 1.8spg in 23 games.

   #9. Michael Sanchez (173-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) contributed to a Concord University's victory against the Urbana University 98-91 in the NCAA2 last Thursday. Sanchez scored 16 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 32 minutes. Sanchez averaged so far 10.7ppg, 2.1rpg, 3.8apg and 1.5spg in 21 games.

   #10. Carlos DeJesus (180-G, currently plays in NCAA2) helped Bridgeport University win their game against the Molloy College 90-79 in the NCAA2 on Saturday night. He scored 17 points and added 3 passes. DeJesus' overall stats this season are: 9.7ppg, 1.6rpg, 1.9apg and 1.3spg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Interesting that DeJesus has never played in Puerto Rico.

Former international Swingman David Huertas (195-G/F-87) put on an extraordinary performance in the last week for Arecibo and that's him to receive a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for week 23. The 29-year old swingman had the game-high 26 points adding eight rebounds and five assists for Arecibo in his team's victory, helping them to edge out San German (#7, 9-14) 81-79. Seventh-ranked Vaqueros (9-14) made lots of trouble for first ranked Santeros (17-4) in Bayamon on Monday. The visitors from Coamo managed to secure only one-point victory 73-72. However their fans expected much easier game. The guests trailed by 5 points at the halftime before their 24-15 charge in the third quarter, which allowed them to win the game.
