Maurice Harkless selected the top Puerto Rican playing abroad in last week's games - Mar 4, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Puerto Ricans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Maurice Harkless

   #1. This week's number one is an international swingman Maurice Harkless (203-93, college: St.John's, currently plays in NBA). Harkless could not help the Portland Trail Blazers (25-34) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance the Portland Trail Blazers (25-34) were defeated 112-106 on the road by the Toronto Raptors. Harkless was the second best scorer with 18 points. He also added 5 rebounds. Harkless has relatively good stats this season: 10.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 54.8%, 3FGP: 35.4% and FT: 65.1%. He has a dual citizenship: Puerto Rican and American. Harkless is currently a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team. Strangely he has never played in Puerto Rico.

Carlos Rivera

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international point guard Carlos Rivera (187-83, college: Hofstra, currently plays in Liga Americas). Rivera led his Mexican team Fuerza Regia to an easy victory against the closely-ranked La Union (1-2) crushing them 93-72 in the LNBP on Friday night. He recorded 15 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in 21 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Fuerza Regia Monterrey (3-0) is placed first in the LNBP. So far his team won all three games in the Second Stage. The Second Stage already ended in the LNBP. This year Rivera has relatively solid stats: 10.8ppg, 4.9rpg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 54.8%, 3FGP: 35.4% and FT: 65.1% in 55 games he played so far. Former Atleticos de San German starter played for the Puerto Rican national team in 2015.

   #3. The Puerto Rican player who performed third best last week abroad was an international guard Guillermo Diaz (188-85, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in Argentina). He was not able to help San Lorenzo (25-11) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Diaz's good performance the first-placed San Lorenzo (25-11) was edged 85-83 at home by the second-ranked Ferrocarril in the Sur group. He scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Diaz has reliable stats this season: 11.0ppg, 2.1rpg, 2.0apg, 2FGP: 61.9%(70-113), 3FGP: 34.7% and FT: 89.2%. He is another player who holds two passports: Georgian and Puerto Rican. Ex-Capitanes de Arecibo player is also a member of the Puerto Rican senior national team.

Ramon Clemente

   #4. Power forward Ramon Clemente (200-85, college: Wichita St., currently plays in Argentina) faced previously mentioned Guillermo Diaz in the Argentinian LigaA last game. Clemente contributed to a 2-point Ferrocarril's victory against the leader San Lorenzo (25-11) 85-83. He scored 10 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 5 assists in 30 minutes. Clemente's stats this year are: 13.7ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.5apg in 35 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Clemente is also Puerto Rican national team player. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #5. International point guard Alex Abreu (180-91, college: W.Georgia, currently plays in Liga Americas) contributed to Guaros' victory against the closely-ranked La Union (1-2) 82-72 in the Liga Americas on Saturday night. Abreu scored 9 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Guaros de Lara (2-1) is placed second in group E. The Second Stage already ended in the Liga Americas. This season Abreu averages: 8.5ppg, 2.2rpg, 4.0apg and 1.7spg. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #6. Swingman Alex Franklin (198-88, college: Siena, currently plays in Mexico) was not able to secure a victory for Toros (22-14) in their last game. Despite Franklin's very good performance Toros was crushed 96-71 in Monterrey by the leading Fuerza Regia. He was the second best scorer with 15 points. Franklin also added 4 passes in 31 minutes. They ended the series of six consecutive victories. Franklin averaged so far 10.2ppg, 3.5rpg and 2.3apg in six games. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. Franklin is an international player who is currently on the senior Puerto Rican National Team roster. He used to play for Indios de Mayaguez in Puerto Rican league.

   #7. Former international point guard Wilfredo Pagan (184-76, currently plays in Mexico) is a teammate of previously mentioned Alex Franklin. But that was another game of his team in Mexican LNBP which we would like to mention. Pagan was the major contributor in Toros' victory against the league leader Fuerza Regia (32-4) 83-70. He recorded 16 points and grabbed 4 rebounds (made all of his five free throws). It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Toros de Nuevo Laredo (22-14) is placed third in the LNBP. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Pagan's overall stats this season are: 8.1ppg, 2.0rpg and 3.1apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Pagan used to play for the Puerto Rican national team fifteen years ago. He played also for Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican league.

   #8. Forward Kevin Young (203-90, college: Kansas, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help CA Platense (14-13) in their last game on Friday. Despite his very good performance CA Platense (#3) was defeated 91-85 in Trelew by the lower-ranked Huracan (#4) in the Center South group. Young recorded a double-double by scoring 22 points and getting 13 rebounds. He also added 4 assists. The Regular Season already ended. Young has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 17.0ppg, 8.3rpg, 1.5apg and 1.3spg. Young used to play for the Puerto Rican national team back in 2015.

   #9. Former U18 international forward Willie Rodriguez (198-94, currently plays college basketball in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the Binghamton (3-11) in their last game. Despite Rodriguez's very good performance the Binghamton was edged 72-71 in Orono by the University of Maine. He scored 26 points (!!!), had 9 boards, passed 4 assists and added 3 steals in 32 minutes. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. Rodriguez averaged so far 11.9ppg, 5.5rpg and 1.2apg in 23 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Rodriguez used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team five years ago. Apparently he has never played in Puerto Rico.

Guard Rasham Suarez (190-92, college: S.Mississippi, currently plays in Estonia) contributed to an easy victory against the closely-ranked TLU/Kalev (7-13) crushing them 98-74 in the Estonian Alexela KML last Saturday. Suarez recorded 6 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. AVIS Rapla (12-8) is placed third in the Alexela KML. Suarez's overall stats this season are: 9.5ppg, 3.1rpg, 2.7apg and 1.3spg. He is a former U18 international player as seven years ago he still played for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #11. International forward William Orozco (201-85, agency: Paris Global Sports, currently plays in Mexico) couldn't help Garzas (22-14) in their last game. Despite Orozco's good performance Garzas lost 83-87 in Mexicali to the second-ranked Soles. He recorded 13 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in a mere 16 minutes. Orozco averaged so far 10.6ppg, 5.6rpg and 1.5apg in 17 games. He plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team.

   #12. Former U16 international guard Eliel Gonzalez (188-95, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the N.Carolina A&T (0-11) in their last game on Monday. Despite Gonzalez's very good performance the N.Carolina A&T was edged 73-70 in Daytona Beach by the Bethune-Cookman College. He scored 20 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. Gonzalez's overall stats this season are: 10.0ppg, 3.5rpg and 2.8apg. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U16 national team back in 2011.

   #13. Former U18 international point guard Angel Rodriguez (180-92, college: Miami, FL, currently plays in France) contributed to a 1-point Cholet Basket's victory against the closely-ranked JDA Dijon 72-71 in the French ProA last Saturday. Rodriguez scored 6 points (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line) in only 13 minutes. Rodriguez averaged so far 10.1ppg, 2.4rpg, 2.8apg and 1.3spg in 21 games. He used to play for the Puerto Rican U18 national team seven years ago.

   #14. International point guard Shabazz Napier (185-91, college: Connecticut, currently plays in NBA) is a teammate of previously mentioned Maurice Harkless and both played together in the last NBA game. Napier couldn't help the Portland Trail Blazers in their game against the Toronto Raptors. He cannot count Sunday's game as one of the best ones. Napier scored only 3 points. His team were defeated 112-106 in the NBA. Napier's overall stats this season are: 3.8ppg, 1.1rpg and 1.1apg. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. Napier plays currently for the Puerto Rican national team. Interesting that he has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #15. International point guard Javier Gonzalez (185-89, college: N.Carolina St., currently plays in Slovakia) managed to help BK Iskra Svit in a victory against the second-ranked Inter Bratislava 80-72 in the Slovakian SBL on Wednesday night. Gonzalez scored only 4 points and added 4 passes in 23 minutes. Gonzalez averaged so far 13.2ppg, 3.4rpg, 5.4apg and 1.7spg in 19 games. Worth to mention he played also at Eurobasket Summer League, which helped him get the job in pro basketball. He is also in the roster of the Puerto Rican national team.


The list of other players, who all have Puerto Rican passport but never been selected to any of Puerto Rican national teams:

   #1. Walter Hodge (183-PG-86, college: Florida, currently plays in France) could not help ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket (10-10) in their last game. Despite his very good performance ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket lost 63-72 on the road to the higher-ranked (#3) Pau-Lacq-Orthez. Hodge was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 4 passes in 33 minutes. It was ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne Basket's third consecutive loss in a row. It's Hodge's first season with the team. Hodge has relatively good stats this year: 13.3ppg, 2.0rpg and 6.2apg in 20 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #2. Ivan Aska (201-F-90, college: Murray St., currently plays in South Korea) was not able to help ET Land Elephants (22-24) in their last game. Despite Aska's very good performance ET Land Elephants were edged 65-63 in Ulsan by the higher-ranked (#4) Mobis Phoebus. He had a double-double by scoring 16 points and getting 17 rebounds in 28 minutes. It was ET Land Elephants' first loss after three consecutive victories. It's Aska's first season with the team. Aska has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.1ppg, 6.8rpg and 1.3apg in 24 games. Aska is another player who holds two passports: U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Emanuel Ubilla (188-PG-86, agency: Court Side, college: Fair Dickinson, currently plays in Hungary) was not able to secure a victory for ZTE KK (11-8) in their last game. Despite his very good performance ZTE KK lost 89-97 in Pecs to the lower-ranked (#7) PVSK Pannon. Ubilla recorded 15 points and added 6 assists in 29 minutes. Ubilla has very impressive stats this year: 16.8ppg, 5.7rpg, 7.9apg and 1.1spg in 19 games. He has both American and Puerto Rican nationalities. Ubilla used to play for Atleticos de San German in Puerto Rican league.

   #4. Gian Clavell (193-G-93, currently plays college basketball in the States) led Colorado St. to a 1-point victory against the San Diego State University (3-9) 56-55 in the NCAA on Saturday night. He recorded a double-double by scoring 18 points and getting 10 rebounds. Clavell also added 3 blocks and 4 steals. The Colorado State University has a solid 10-4 conference record this season. His team will play only one more game in the NCAA Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This season Clavell has very high stats. He averages: 18.8ppg, 6.2rpg, 1.6apg and 1.8spg.

   #5. Kevin Maura (173-PG, currently studies in the States), who plays in the NCAA couldn't help the one of league's weakest teams UMBC (7-6) in their last game. Despite Maura's good performance the UMBC lost 90-94 at home to the University of New Hampshire. He scored 12 points and grabbed 4 rebounds in 45 minutes. The Regular Season already ended in the NCAA. This year Maura's overall stats are: 8.1ppg, 2.7rpg, 4.1apg and 1.9spg in 28 games.

   #6. Carlos DeJesus (180-G, currently plays in NCAA2) led Bridgeport University to a victory against the Queens (NY) 85-74 in the NCAA2 last Wednesday. He scored 13 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and dished 4 assists. DeJesus' overall stats this season are: 9.6ppg, 1.7rpg, 2.0apg and 1.2spg. He also holds two passports: Puerto Rican and American. However DeJesus has never played in Puerto Rico.

   #7. Jose Martinez (200-F, is currently at the American university) contributed to a 3-point San Diego's victory against the University of Portland 85-82 in the NCAA in Saturday night's game. Martinez scored 11 points. This season Martinez averages only 2.4ppg.

   #8. Michael Sanchez (173-PG, currently plays in NCAA2) couldn't help the Concord University (4-14) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his good performance the Concord University was defeated 100-92 in Wise by the The University of Virginia Coll.. Sanchez scored 10 points and added 5 passes. Sanchez averaged so far 10.3ppg, 2.0rpg, 3.7apg and 1.3spg.

   #9. TreVon Hughes (183-PG-87, college: Wisconsin, currently plays in Turkey) contributed to a Duzce Belediye's victory against the closely-ranked Pertevniyal 80-69 in the Turkish TBL (second division) last Wednesday. He recorded 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals in 30 minutes. Hughes averaged so far 14.8ppg, 4.7rpg, 4.5apg and 2.1spg in 21 games. He holds both American and Puerto Rican passports. However Hughes has never played in Puerto Rico.

BSN Round 10: Santeros defeat Vaqueros in the closest game of the week - 16 hours ago
Ninth-ranked Vaqueros (2-7) gave a tough game to first ranked Santeros (9-1) in Coamo on Tuesday. Santeros managed to secure only two-point victory 77-75. However their fans expected much easier game. The hosts trailed by 10 points at the halftime before their 48-36 charge in the second half, which allowed them to win the game. 27-year old guard Cliff Duran (191-G-89, agency: Paris Global Sports) had a great game in the last week for Mayaguez and receives a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for week 9. He had the game-high 27 points adding five rebounds and six assists for Mayaguez in his team's victory, helping them to beat Arecibo (#6, 4-4) 89-81. BSN Round 9: Leones beat Vaqueros by three after a very close game - 2 days ago
The most exciting game of round 9 in the BSN took place in Bayamon. This derby game ended with only three-point home defeat of 8th ranked Vaqueros (2-6) to sixth ranked Leones (5-4) 91-88 on Sunday evening. Leones made 34-of-45 free shots (75.6 percent) during the game, while Vaqueros only scored ten points from the stripe.
