BSN Round 20: Leader Santeros lose to Fajardo - May 17, 2017

BSN is at the halfway of the Regular Season and there are still another 20 rounds left. There were many interesting games last round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games.

Top ranked Santeros (14-4) recorded its fourth loss on the court of second ranked Fajardo on Monday night. Visitors were defeated by Fajardo 71-64. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Santeros. It may be a crucial game in the contest for the top position in the league. The hosts were tied at the half but managed to speed up in last two quarters eventually winning the game. Fajardo dominated on the defensive end, holding Santeros to just 6 points in second quarter. Strangely Santeros outrebounded Fajardo 46-34 including 36 on the defensive glass. The best player for the winners was American forward Damion James (201-87, college: Texas) who scored 23 points and 8 rebounds. International point guard Carlos Arroyo (188-79, college: FIU, agency: Interperformances) chipped in 17 points and 7 assists. Egyptian-American center Omar Samhan (211-88, college: St.Mary's, CA) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds for the guests. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Fajardo have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 12-6 record having just two points less than leader Aguada. Santeros at the other side still keep top place with four games lost. Fajardo are looking forward to face Atleticos (#9) in San German in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Santeros will have a break next round.
Important game to mention about took place in Humacao. Eighth ranked Brujos (8-11) saved a 1-point victory on the road edging 6th ranked Caciques (8-11) 80-79 in the game for the sixth place. American guard Damien Wilkins (198-80, college: Georgia) saved the victory by scoring 28 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists. Chane Behanan contributed with 14 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized American guard Wil Martinez (188-92, college: Fairmont St., agency: Paris Global Sports) replied with 33 points (!!!) and 5 rebounds for Caciques. Brujos moved-up to sixth place, which they share with Humacao. Caciques lost sixth consecutive game. Brujos will play against Vaqueros (#8) in Bayamon in the next round. Caciques will have a break next round.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Arecibo. Second ranked Fajardo faced 4th ranked Capitanes. Guests from (12-6) defeated host Capitanes (9-10) 100-95. Worth to mention a great performance of Damion James who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists. David Huertas responded with 24 points and 7 rebounds. Fajardo have a solid three-game winning streak. They maintain second position with 12-6 record having just two points less than leader Aguada. Defending champion Capitanes keep the fourth place with ten games lost. Fajardo will meet Atleticos (#9) in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Capitanes will play against Leones (#5) in Juana Diaz and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
The game in Guayama was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Piratas (10-5) played at the court of 8th ranked Brujos (8-11). Piratas defeated Brujos 92-79. The winners were led by Jorge-Bryan Diaz who scored that evening 30 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 13-of-16 shooting from the field). Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Piratas maintains third position with 10-5 record having seven points less than leader Aguada. Brujos at the other side dropped to the sixth place with 11 games lost. Piratas' next round opponent will be Indios (#10) in Mayaguez and are hoping to win another game. Brujos will play on the road against Vaqueros (#8) in Bayamon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

The best player for the winners was Gary Browne who scored 8 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Atleticos moved-up to ninth place. Vaqueros lost third consecutive game. They dropped to the eighth position with 12 games lost. Atleticos will face league's second-placed Fajardo in the next round and they do not belong to the favorites in that game.

Bayamon - San German 83-89

We should mention about the upset which took place in Bayamon, where 7th ranked Vaqueros (8-12) lost at home to tenth ranked Atleticos (7-12) 83-89 on Tuesday. The guests trailed by 1 point after first quarter, but they rallied back to get the 11-point lead at the halftime and eventually won the game 89-83. Atleticos made 22-of-27 free shots (81.5 percent) during the game, while Vaqueros only scored six points from the stripe. Atleticos had a 27-16 advantage in offensive rebounds. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 25 assists. The best player for the winners was the former international guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, agency: Inception Sports) who scored 8 points, 8 rebounds and 11 assists. American power forward Justin Keenan (202-88, college: Ferris St.) chipped in 21 points. Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91, agency: Paris Global Sports) produced a double-double by scoring 24 points and 10 rebounds (on 11-of-13 shooting from the field) and Mexican Hector Hernandez (205-85, college: Fresno St., agency: BeoBasket) added 11 points respectively for the hosts. Four Atleticos and five Vaqueros players scored in double figures. Both coaches allowed to play bench players saving starting five for next games. Atleticos moved-up to ninth place. Fajardo looked well-organized offensively handing out 23 assists. Worth to mention a great performance of American forward Damion James (201-87, college: Texas) who helped to win the game recording a double-double by scoring 27 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists and the other American import center Shawn James (208-83, college: Northeastern) who added 17 points, 14 rebounds and 5 assists (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field) during the contest. Guayama - Quebradillas 79-92

The game in Guayama was also worth to mention about. Third ranked Piratas (10-5) played at the court of 8th ranked Brujos (8-11). Piratas defeated Brujos 92-79. The game was mostly controlled by Piratas. Brujos was better in third quarter 29-25. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 27 assists comparing to just 13 passes made by Brujos' players. The winners were led by the former international center Jorge-Bryan Diaz (210-89, college: Nebraska) who scored that evening 30 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 13-of-16 shooting from the field) and the former international swingman Alejandro Carmona (194-83) supported him with 27 points and 5 rebounds. Even 25 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists (was perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line) by American guard Damien Wilkins (198-80, college: Georgia) did not help to save the game for Brujos. His fellow American import forward Chane Behanan (198-92, college: Louisville) added 13 points and 10 rebounds for the hosts. Four Brujos players scored in double figures.
