BSN Round 21: Vaqueros beat Brujos by three after a very close game - May 19, 2017

The most exciting game of round 21 in the BSN took place in Bayamon. This derby game ended with only three-point defeat on the road of 6th ranked Brujos (8-12) to eighth ranked Vaqueros (9-12) 79-76 on Thursday evening. The hosts took control from the first minutes by winning the initial quarter 19-16. But Brujos won second period 22-21. However it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. The game was decided in the last minutes when Vaqueros won last quarter 20-18. Vaqueros outrebounded Brujos 37-22 including 27 on the defensive glass. It was a good game for Cuban center Ismael Romero (203-91, agency: Paris Global Sports) who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 14 rebounds. The former international guard Jesse Pellot-Rosa (193-84, college: VCU, agency: Paris Global Sports) contributed with 19 points and 6 rebounds for the winners. American forward Chane Behanan (198-92, college: Louisville) answered with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 11 rebounds for Brujos. Vaqueros moved-up to fifth place. Brujos at the other side dropped to the eighth position with 12 games lost. Vaqueros are looking forward to face Leones (#6) in Juana Diaz in the next round. Brujos will have a break next round.
Very important is a home loss of third ranked Piratas (10-6) against tenth ranked Indios (7-10) on Wednesday night. Host Piratas were defeated by Indios in a tough game in Quebradillas 72-78. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Piratas. American forward David Laury (206-90, college: Iona) stepped up with a double-double by scoring 22 points and 15 rebounds for the winners and Kevin Young chipped in 18 points and 9 rebounds. The best for the losing side was American guard Gerald Fitch (191-82, college: Kentucky) with 18 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Indios moved-up to ninth place. Piratas at the other side keep the third position with six games lost. Indios will play against league's leader Santeros in Coamo in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Piratas will play against the league's second-placed Fajardo where they are definitely not considered as a favorite in this game either.

In the last game of round 21 Fajardo beat San German on the road 85-79.

Ponce - Arecibo 81-92

The game in Juana Diaz was also quite interesting. Fourth ranked Capitanes (10-10) played at the court of 5th ranked Leones (8-10). Capitanes defeated Leones 92-81 on Thursday. The game was mostly controlled by Capitanes. Leones managed to win fourth quarter 26-15. But it was not enough to take a lead and get a victory that evening. Capitanes shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 51.9 percentage. The former international swingman David Huertas (195-87, college: Mississippi) nailed 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists for the winning side and the former international point guard Denis Clemente (183-86, college: Kansas St.) accounted for 26 points. American power forward Eric Dawson (206-84, college: Midwestern St., agency: Haylett Sports) came up with 24 points and 6 rebounds and the former international swingman Angel-Daniel Vassallo (198-86, college: Virginia Tech) added 17 points and 4 assists respectively for Leones in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Defending champion maintains fourth place with 10-10 record. Loser Leones dropped to the sixth position with ten games lost. Capitanes will meet league's leader Santeros in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Leones will play against Vaqueros (#5) in Bayamon and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

San German - Fajardo 79-85

No shocking result in a game when second ranked Fajardo (13-6) beat 10th ranked Atleticos (7-13) in San German 85-79 on Thursday. Atleticos were trailing by 2 points at halftime but managed to get 4-point lead after three quarters before a 20-10 charge of Fajardo, which allowed them to win the game. They made 17-of-19 free shots (89.5 percent) during the game. American center Shawn James (208-83, college: Northeastern) nailed a double-double by scoring 10 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists for the winning side and international point guard Carlos Arroyo (188-79, college: FIU, agency: Interperformances) accounted for 22 points. American power forward Justin Keenan (202-88, college: Ferris St.) came up with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 10 rebounds and the former international guard Gary Browne (185-93, college: W.Virginia, agency: Inception Sports) added 15 points, 8 rebounds and 5 assists respectively for Atleticos in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Fajardo have a solid series of four victories in a row. They maintain second place with 13-6 record behind leader Aguada. Loser Atleticos keep the tenth position with 13 games lost. Fajardo will meet at home Piratas (#3) in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Atleticos will play against Piratas (#3) in Quebradillas and hope to secure a win.

Mahindra Floodbuster (PBA) agreed terms with 25-year old American forward Chane Behanan (198-113kg-92, college: Louisville). He played this summer at Brujos de Guayama in Puerto Rican BSN league.
