St.PaulsTopples Hitters to Win SKABA Title: Nash declared finals MVP

In what can easily be described as the most exciting game in SKABA since the Fig Tree Dirt Revellers and the McKnight Trotters fought tooth and nail in the 2005 finals the Caribbean Insurance St.Pauls Tuff Knots and the Rams Hitters gave the packed house at basketball city all their money's worth and more on Wednesday evening in the deciding game of the 3 game finals series of the 2007 SKABA Digicel/National Bank/KFC National Basketball league.

The St.Pauls Tuff Knots got out the gates early, excited and enthusiastic as they totally dominated the first half of the game. They grabbed every loose ball and converted almost at will. The Hitters seemingly had no answer for the younger and, some may say, more talented St.Pauls team. Exciting guard Clayton “Claybo” Powell ran circles around Hitters guard and defensive specialist Marlon “Jah Love” Powell .Powell also seemed too much for the aged legs of veteran Trevor “Marty” Huggins . Nasharn and Brother Noren Maynard were simply monstrous on the boards as they out-hustled and out rebounded Hitters forwards Shawn “Shabba” Forbes and David “Longman Dowell. The first half ended with St.Pauls enjoying a very comfortable and dominating 14 point lead, 50-36.

However the 2nd half began with a much more energized and focused Hitters team. Like a surgeon with a precision knife, the 17 time champions methodically cut back into the huge lead and with 8:57 secs to go in the 4th quarter the Hitters tied the game 60-60 with a spectacular 3 point shot by SKABA legend Marty Huggins. Marty showed exactly why he is considered by most the best player ever in SKABA as the young legs of Clayton Powell (180-G) and Karis Douglas became weary and thus were unable to stop the 25 year veteran from throwing up and converting an amazing 3- three point shots in less than 2 minutes.

By the middle of the 4th quarter the Hitters had full control of the game and the momentum had totally shifted in their favor. At this time the score was 74-71. St.Pauls however showed great determination as they valiantly fought back on the strength of the broad shoulders of Nasharn Maynard who along with brother Noren and guard Clayton Powell dug deep and rode the overwhelming support of the St.Pauls fans who came out in their numbers, the St.Pauls Tuff Knots scored the final 7 points unanswered . The Hitters simply had little or nothing left after coming back from 20 points down to tie the game. Even the importation of overseas based player Kevin Davis, did not help the Hitters to deny St.Pauls their first title. At the final whistle hundreds of St.Pauls Tuff Knots fans swarmed the court to celebrate their team's 81-77 victory over the dynasty known as Hitters.

Much credit for the St.Pauls victory must be given to Coach St.Clair “Heads” Buchanan who did a splendid job in keeping his team calm and focused even when the Hitters took the lead early in the 4th quarter.Nasharn Maynard was declared the Finals and Playoff MVP as he was the main catalyst throughout the entire playoff for the St.Pauls Tuff Knots' first national title. He led all scorers with 20 points and 8 rebounds. Noren Maynard supported well with 17 points and 7 rebounds and Clayton Powell had yet another solid game with 16 points and 7 assists. Trevor Marty Huggins led the Hitters with 19 points which included 3-three pointers. The Hitters young and exciting guards Marlon “Jah Love” Powell and Ansell “Bonze” Revan played credibly but way below the standard that was expected of them given the magnitude of the game. Ansell and Marlon combined for 28 points and just 4 assists, 3 below the assist total of St.Pauls Tuff Knots guard Clayton Powell. Other good performances came from Javid Williams of St.Pauls Tuff Knots with 8 points and 8 rebounds and Hiters' Shawn “Shabba” Forbes with 11 points and 5 rebounds.
The TUFF Knots were promoted to the Premier division just two seasons ago after an undefeated championship run in the SKABA “A” division. They reached the quarterfinals last season and then stamped their mark on this season as they were the only team to beat the Hitters twice on the season.

Big Nash Named SKABA Finals MVP
Basseterre, St.Kitts (December 15th 2007):-The 2007 SKABA DIGICEL PREMEIR division finals not only produced one of the most, if not the most exciting finals in league history. But it also featured one of the better individual performances as well. Nasharn Maynard has been toughing it with the Tuff Knots since his emergence back in 2005 when he led the Junior team to an undefeated regular season. It was during this season that Nash became recognized as one of the most exciting, dominant and talented players in SKABA. However he was lost in the shadows of veteran Premier marquis players such as Glen Ghost Phillip, Trevor “Marty” Huggins as well as the exciting Levi “By-By” Fyfeild and Rymal “Bally” Browne.
In that year Nash led both the St.Pauls Tuff Knots Junior and Senior teams to an amazing 28-2 overall record to win the Junior division regular season and the “A” division championship. Between both divisions Nash averaged well over 20 ppg and 11 rpg. His exceptional play earned him a place on the National Senior team that Journeyed to Jamaica in 2006 as well as the National Junior Team that played in the CBC under 19 tourney in Trinidad the year before.
Since 2005 Nash has been arguably the most consistent player in the entire SKABA league, where he has averaged at least 18 ppg and 10 rpg over the last 3 seasons. His on court prowess has landed him a scholarship to a University in the US. According to SKABA officials Maynard will be leaving in January.
Nash's selection as MVP was an easy one. Despite the invaluable contribution of teammate Clayton Powell who brought stability to the back court in the final two games Nash's leadership in addition to his physical contribution was immeasurable. He led the series in points, rebounds, blocked shots and minutes played. Other great performances came from Trevor “Marty” Huggins who some may argue saved Hitters from a possible clean sweep as he almost single handedly won game one for the Hitters. Hitters guard Marlon ‘Jah Love' Powell as well as St.Pauls forward Noren Maynard had exceptional series.
This latest award adds to Nash's long list of accolades which includes MVP awards in both the Junior and ‘A” divisions. In fact the history books just might reflect that Nash is the only player to receive MVP awards for Junior, Senior and “A” divisions.
The SKABA 2007 league concluded with new national champions in the St.Pauls Tuff Knots. The ODB Fruta Falcons retained their KFC Junior division title and the Blue Devils won the Digicel “A” division . The National Bank female division was won by the First Caribbean International Bank Lady Blue Devils.

  HITTERS WINS SKABA TITLE........AGAIN
The Rams Hitters has done it again winning their 17th St.Kitts Amateur Basketball Association Championship title as they defeated the defending champions Cable and Wireless Fig Tree 2 games to nil in the best of three games final series to take the coveted 2006 SKABA Sprite/National Bank Championship Title .
The game 2 in the best of 3 series final began with both teams playing well with none having any significant advantage. The energetic Fig Tree guard Lyle Dixie Duggins played well defensively to keep the Hitters guard combo of Marlon Powel and Trevor Marty Huggins in check. At the half Hitters enjoyed a very slim and uncomfortable 2 point lead, 39-37. The second half began with Hitters going on a 10 -0 run as the Fig Tree team broke down mentally as they began to concentrate more on the officials calls than on the game. The Fig Tree players became more concerned about how the referee blew than how to keep the Hitters from establishing an insurmountable lead. With less than 4 minutes remaining in the 4th quarter Fig Tree found themselves down 57-43. Hitters held on to the huge advantage well into the 4th quarter when Fig tree made a very brief run to bring the hitters lead to within 13. However a series of missed opportunities by Fig Tree allowed the Hitters to further extend their lead to as much as 20 with 2 minutes remaining. Fig Tree had multiple easy opportunities in the final quarter which they failed to convert and their developed obsession with referees calls made the final quarter a rather easy one for the Hitters as they extended their 14 point half time lead to a huge 23 point lead at the final whistle with the score 88-65. The hugely fig tree favored crowd at basketball city let out a simultaneous moan as the final horn blew with Hitters regaining the SKABA title. The much low-keyed victory was a vast difference to the carnival like atmosphere during the 2005 final between Fig Tree and McKnight Trotters. The huge fig tree presence in the crowd became evident at games end when it seemed like the only persons celebrating the Hitters victory was the Hitters players themselves. However the crowd were obviously unhappy but even more evident was the fact that they were not at all disappointed as they appreciated the effort of their team considering the plethora of injuries to key players including leading rebounder Shane Shuba Hendrick and Kemo Shasta Duncan who did not play in game 1 but valiantly played in game two with a severely broken nose, as well as the impressive performance of the new champions Hitters.Glen Ghost Phillip led all scorers with 23 points and 10 rebounds while guard Marlon Powell had 15 points and 4 rebounds for Hitters. Fig Tree was led by Lyle Dixie Duggins with an inspiring 19 points and 5 rebounds while Eston Williams had 14 points and 3 rebounds. Other good performances cam from Jerran Morris with 12 points and 8 rebounds and Othneil Hyliger with 7 points and 2 rebounds.
Admittedly The finals was not an exceptionally exciting one but it did not deter the presence and participation of the basketball fans who turned out in their numbers to support the teams and basketball, said Wallis Wilkin Vice President of SKABA. Again the interest and excitement in the game has grown significantly over the last few years and we intend to maintain that interest with various out-of season basketball leagues and activities including the proposed SKABA Business League, the on going Renee Digulio Summer Female League and the 2nd annual Caribbean Club Basketball Invitational in which I hope to see new SKABA champions Hitters and defending Caribbean Invitational Champions Fig Tree and "A" division champions from Nevis the Cotton Ground Rebels representing the federation against the regions top club teams at the tournament, the SKABA VP continued.
The playoff/finals MVP was Shawn Shabba Forbes of Hitters who averaged over 18 points and 15 rebounds per game.

FIG TREE CROWNED SKABA CHAMPIONS 2005
In what many have proclaimed the most exciting SKABA finals in local basketball history the Fig Tree Dirt Revelers defeated the Bookie Auto Rentals Trotters 109-101 in a keenly contested match-up that thrilled 1000's of basketball fans at basketball city.
The game started with both teams immediately going to there respective strengths as Trotters exploited there famous 'run and gun' up-tempo offence while Fig Tree went to the outside shooting of there Game 2 hero Eston Williams. Trotters' up-tempo style got the better of Fig Tree during the early stages of the game as Levi 'By-By' Fyfeild had his way with the Fig Tree defense which seemed unable to contain the SKABA All Star. Fyfeild led his team with 21 points as they enjoyed a very slim 54-52 advantage at the end of the first half.
The 2nd half saw Fig Tree asserting themselves more and stretching the defense of Trotters, as sharp shooter Ray 'Lomax' Liddie unleashed a string of three pointers. This enabled the Fig Tree Big men, Shane 'Shuba' Hendricks and Kemo 'Shasta' Duncan to dominate the inside play and taking advantage of the seemingly under-manned frontcourt of Trotters. Despite the valiant efforts of Terrance 'Bol' Wharton with 20 points and 13 rebounds and Tamboura Caines with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Trotters were simply out-played by Fig Tree. Ray Liddie led Fig Tree with 24 points including 5- 3 pointers while teammate George 'Goolay' Gaton supported well with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 8 Assists and 4 steals. Kemo Duncan had a dominating 17 points and 14 rebounds and Shane Hendricks had a spectacular 19 points and 8 rebounds. Game 2 hero Eston Williams ended his phenomenal season with 22 points and 4 assists and the Finals MVP trophy. Williams was adjudged Finals MVP after averaging 27 points per game including a record 41 points in game 2.
This is Fig Tree's first SKABA title and Trotters 5th straight Finals Defeat. Fig Tree is the first team from the Rural area to be crowned SKABA Champions.
