The clinics will be mandatory for all persons who are interested in coaching teams for the 2009 season. Two women who have in recent times organized Basketball tournaments on Nevis are playing key leading roles in a newly organized Basketball Association on the island. Wanda Parry, who has been instrumental in running the Church Ground Basketball league for the last several years, is the new President of the Association and Veronica Brandy, who has been instrumental in organizing a league in the Gingerland area for the past two years, is her deputy. PRO and Assistant Secretary Jan Dash indicated yesterday that the Association was born out of the need for an organized annual tournament on the island. I am not knocking the village leagues---but when they are organized, you never know which month there is always some uncertainty. We want to have an organized league annually and that will be held every year in the month of February, he stated. President Parry noted that due to the fact that the month of February is already gone for this year, her Association is planning a smaller version of a tournament which will be held between the months of August and September of this year and then starting next year, the league will get its official beginnings with the February tournament. The name of the Nevis Basketball Association is NABA which stands for Nevis Amateur Basketball Association. When asked about future connections with the more established SKABA Association based in St.Kitts, the President and the PRO indicated that they would still encourage Nevis teams to participate in the SKABA league but as is the case now, teams will have to make their own financial arrangements for travel and accommodation when playing matches. Ms Parry also noted that if teams from St.Kitts wanted to participate in the Nevis league, they would also be accepted. She further indicated that her new Association has established a good rapport with the SKABA and she has received many suggestions and ideas especially from the SKABA President as to how to promote Basketball on Nevis. Currently there are two Nevisian teams participating in the SKABA league with CG Rebels which made great waves last year in making it to the finals of the Premier league still involved and PJs making their debut appearance in the A division and having won their first game as well. According to PRO Dash, the annual Nevis league will be patterned off the internationally renowned NBA league and all efforts will be made to ensure that the players develop their skill level and that the game of Basketball reaches to hitherto unattained heights on the island. In order to ensure that the standard of the game is improved one of the first projects of the new Association is a hosting of a seminar geared to officials and prospective Basketball officials on the island. The seminar will be held on the evening of Saturday 21st May at a venue to be announced. Persons interested in being Referees, scorers, time keepers etc in local tournaments are kindly invited to be a part of the seminar which will be conducted by officials from SKABA. Dash further noted that 15 teams are already organized and ready to participate in the upcoming tournament and a call is being made to all potential sponsors to come on board with the new Association in its quest to take the game of Basketball to another level. The full slate of individuals elected to serve for the NABA are:
PRESIDENT: SCHAKIMA WANDA PARRY VICE PRESIDENT: VERONICA BRANDY TREASURER: DWAYNE WARNER ASST. TREASURER: KIRT HERBERT SECRETARY: MICHELLE SUTTON PRO & ASST. SECRETARY: JAN DASH
