The St Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball Association received a timely visit from an official of Basketball Canada and one of three persons who represent Canada at various international basketball meetings and fora. John Buis, on Tuesday 18th May, 2010, in an interview with The Vincentian, said that his initial contact with St. Vincent was made through Wayne Williams, former President of the local Basketball Federation.
I got to know him (Williams) well because he was interested in one of our Youth Basketball programmes -The Steve Nash (190-G-74, college: Santa Clara) Programme. Steve Nash, he explained, is a Canadian who plays professional Basketball in the United States with the Phoenix Suns wearing number thirteen (13) jerseys and is the sponsor of the programme in Canada. Buis disclosed: I have a present for St Vincent and the Grenadines Basketball that can be used as a fund raiser, and presented to the new SVG Basketball Federation President, Cleophas Glynn, an autographed game vest from Mr. Steve Nash. Glynn and Williams had accompanied Buis on his visit to The VINCENTIAN. Prompted with respect to offering advice to the local Federation, Buis encouraged the development of a Schools Basketball programme. Develop a good youth base programme and get the parents involved, he stated and claimed, in the Steve Nash Programme, a lot of the materials put together are about positive coaching, keeping the youths in school and eventually developing good citizens. Former President of the St Vincent Basketball Association Williams explained that managing basketball in St Vincent and the Grenadines continues to be a challenge. He highlighted: The challenge was to put the interest in (programmes like) the Steve Nash programme and to start a school system that the Basketball Association could have more control over. We have the programmes documented but the difficulty is the resources to pump into the programmes. Williams went on to say, Our programmes have created world class players in Sancho Lyttle (193-C-83, college: Houston), Sophia Young (186-F-83, college: Baylor), Adonal Foyle (207-F-75, college: Colgate), and when the support is not seen to improve the programme or expand the impact it created, it is real disheartening. According to President Glynn , his Executive will be seeking to re- establish the game of basketball back into the community by implementing grassroots programmes, to be carried out on weekends and Holiday times. We will also be re- establishing tournaments in various areas in order to organize proper National Championships.
The male and female senior National Basketball teams are currently in preparation for various regional and international tournaments, including Olympic qualifiers for the females.
