Force Wins 4th Super Ten Title - Jan. 23, 2007
- by Don Farrell
Defence Force created history when they became the first team to win the Stag
Super Ten Basketball Championship four times in 11 years.
The army/coastguard combination team swept Unit Trust Maloney Pacers 3-0,
winning game-three of the Best-in-Five series final 87-72 at the Jean Pierre
Complex, Mucurapo, on Monday night.
Defence Force were winners of the event in 1992, 96 and 97.
Pacers from the jump were unprepared for the level of intensity which the
Defence Force team brought.
The first quarter scores read 31-13 in favour of the soldier/sailor combination
team and it never looked back.
With their supporting cast headed by Edmund Dillon, the Chief of Defence Force
Staff, Pacers were no match for the ‘Teteron boys' as they dominated all
departments of the contest to lead 52-33 at half-time.
With over 400 in attendance the army/coastguard unit closed the third quarter 22
(73-51) points ahead tasting victory.
The Maloney-based team tried to make a comeback in the final session through
forward Kenyatta Alfred.
He scored three three-pointers in his 11 points to help Pacers outscore their
opponents, 21-15 but the huge deficit that plagued them throughout the match was
too difficult to overcome before time expired.
For the third consecutive match forward Steven ‘Lighter' Lewis led the scoring
when he followed up his 39 points on Saturday in game two with 35, to help guide
his team to the $25,000 first prize.
For Pacers, David Farmer was again their top scorer with 15 points. The
Maloney-based team took home $10,000.
Raptors tame Lions to secure 3rd place
Forward Kirk Baptiste scored a career-high 32 points which guided Marabella
Raptors to 2-0 series win in their Best-in-Three series play-off for third and
fourth places when they defeated Royal Extra Lions 100-98. Raptors also won
game-one 82-77.
Raptors third place finish earned them $4,000 and $2,000 went to fourth-place
team, Lions.
