Brazil is the winner of FIBA Americas Championship 2009! The host of this prestigious event demonstrated the best performance during the last five days and totally deserved the Gold. Fernanda Neves Beling (186-F-82) added 13 pts, while Adriana Santos (180-G/F-71) helped with double-double, 12 points and 16 rebounds. In the loosing squad Erica Sanchez (182-F/C-76) had 13 points and 5 boards. Paula Reggiardo (84) was behind her with 11 points.
Third place
Cuba - Canada 49-59 Canada grabbed the Bronze and the last ticket for 2010 FIBA World Championship in Czech Republic. Teresa Gabriele (165-G-79) and her teammates had to work very hard in order to beat Cuba and they did it in over time. It was 48-48 after 40 minutes of play, but Canada registered impressive 1-11 during the extra five minutes. Cuba goes home disappointed without the medal and participation on World Championship. Teresa Gabriele once again was a key player in victory collecting 15 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Adams (191-F-81, college: N.Mexico) and Kaelea Chapdelaine (178-G-85, college: Oregon) netted 13 points each. In Cuba, Suchitel Avila (183-F-82) had 13 points and 9 boards. Yulizeny Soria (181-F-79) stopped on 12 pts.
Places 5-6
Puerto Rico - Chile 61-49 Puerto Rico finished participation in Brazil with three consecutive wins. Their registered first victory in the last day of Preliminary Round and after that two in the battle for fifth place, which they grabbed thanks to 61-49 win against Chile. Of course, Chile is the sixth ranked team on this event. Milagro Martinez-Maggette (180-G-80, college: Georgia Tech) shined for Puerto Rico with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Cynthia Valentin (173-G-84, agency: LBM Management, college: Indiana) also had very important role scoring 15 points. Chile got double-double from Tatiana Gomez (193-C-81), 20 points and 14 boards. Romina Valenzuela (178-F-86) contributed in this loss with 12 pts.
Places 7-8
Venezuela - Dominican Republic 87-82 Venezuela avoided the last place on FIBA Americas Championship 2009 in Brazil. Both teams were winless before this game with 0-4 score. Venezuela grabbed it thanks to Ofelia Villarroel (174-G-78, college: Oklahoma), who drained 28 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Roselis Silva (G-91) had 16 and Cleider Blanco (C-90) followed with 11 pts. In the loosing squad, Sugeiry Monsac (186-F/C-81) shined with 28 points and 13 boards. Andreina Paniagua (78) was another player with double-double, 17 pts and 11 boards. Venezuela celebrated in overtime (13-8).

Not only that Argentina will have a chance for fight for the Gold today against the hosts, but they also booked a ticket for the FIBA World Championship next year in Czech Republic. Marcela Paoletta (170-G-79) led the winners with 15 points. Florencia Fernandez (190-C-86) had 13, while Erica Sanchez (182-F/C-76) added 10 pts and 9 rebounds. Canada got 13 pts from Teresa Gabriele (165-G-79). It will take on Cuba today for the Bronze and last ticker for the World Championship 2010.

Puerto Rico - Venezuela 74-53 Puerto Rico cruised past Venezuela 74-53 making a first step forward to fifth place on this event. In order to do that Puerto Rico will have to beat Chile today. On the other side, Venezuela remains winless on this championship. It will have a chance today against also winless Dominican Republic to avoid the last place. Chile - Dominican Republic 72-58 Chile celebrated nice 72-58 victory against Dominican Republic and it will meet Puerto Rico today in the battle for the fifth place. This is the second win for Chile on this event. As the same time, Dominican Republic did not have reason for a joy, but they will have a chance today against Venezuela in the game for 7th place. Ziomara Morrison (193-C-89) stepped up for the winners with 19 points and 7 rebounds. Catalina De La Quinta (168-G-88) Quinta helped with 14 and Tatiana Gomez (193-C-81) added 12 pts, plus 10 boards. Puerto Rico - Dominican Republic 83-44 Puerto Rico cruised past Dominican Republic registering the first win on FIBA Americas Championship in Brazil. It means that Puerto Rico ended Preliminary Round as No.3 in Group A with 1-2 record. Dominican Republic is winless, 0-3. Cynthia Valentin (173-G-84, agency: LBM Management, college: Indiana) once again shined in Puerto Rico draining 22 points. Pamela Rosado (161-G-86) and Aixanell Santos (178-F-84) followed her with 11 pts each. On the other side, Jennifer Estrella (88) netted 12 points in loss. Charlenny Frias (84) stopped on 10. Both teams will continue in Classification Round (5-8 place).
Group B
Argentina - Cuba 85-81 Argentina grabbed an overtime win against Cuba securing the first place in Group B with perfect 3-0 record. Cuba fell to 1-2 finishing the Preliminary Round as a second ranked team in the same pool. Both will continue in Semifinals and will have a chance to fight for the medals. Marcela Paoletta (170-G-79) was on fire scoring 22 points for the winners. Paula Reggiardo (84) and Florencia Fernandez (190-C-86) combined 32 points and 15 rebounds, while Erica Sanchez (182-F/C-76) added 15 pts and 9 rebs. In Team Cuba, Clenia Noblet (191-C-87) collected 21 points and 9 boards. She was followed by Yamara Amargo (180-F-85) with 16 pts. In the Semifinals, Argentina will meet Canada. Cuba will take on Brazil.
Chile - Venezuela 77-69 Chile avoided the last place in Preliminary Group B. Both teams were winless before this game, but Chile is the one who ended this stage on third place. Venezuela is the last ranked country in this pool, but still both will continue in Classification Round (5-8 place). Tatiana Gomez (193-C-81) was a key player in this victory. She spent 36 minutes on the court collecting 31 points and 9 rebounds. Daniela Troncoso (175-F-87) had 12 and Romina Valenzuela (178-F-86) added one point less. Ofelia Villarroel (174-G-78, college: Oklahoma) responded with 19 points and 11 boards in loss. Jofranny Guerra (88) was behind her with 10 pts.
