Millennium Basketball Academy (MBA) secured 3rd place at the Global Cup with a 40-31 revenge win over Team Legacy today at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

In the battle for the 3rd spot, Team MBA played with more confidence than in previous games. From the jump ball, MBA controlled the tempo scoring the first two shots for a 4-0 lead. Led by their hard working team captain Joel Hinds, MBA for the first time in the tournament ended the 1st half in front, 22-21.

During the second period MBA played with more intensity with 6-9 center Chike Augustine finally showing up with three critical block shots. With the game still open Hinds started the 2nd session by weaving his way through the opponent defense for a layup to increase the lead, 24-21.

With the scores still close in the 1.51 mark, forward Justin Medina came up with a big steal with resulted in an uncontested layup for Patrick Scipio as MBA pulled away 35-31. As the battle continued Team Legacy offense was shut down with some aggressive half court man to man defense by MBA.

In the closing 10 seconds Augustine scored a dunk off a missed shot to increase the lead 37-31. Next possession MBA forced a turnover and Medina scored a three point play, a layup & free shot, to end the contest.

With the win Team MBA won the 3rd place and at the same time scored a revenged victory. Team Legacy won the earlier group match 37-30.

For MBA Patrick Scipio top scored with 10pts, Hinds & Medina got 7 a piece, while Augustine added 6pts & 3 blocks.

Overall Team MBA was the only team in the group to limited all their opponents to under 40 pts per game. Despite the challenges, MBA performed creditably. It was a great experience for the players and also the opportunity to play at a world class location.

The team returns to Trinidad on Tuesday.

From the start PR with an experienced line-up of NBA and professional players, which included Carlos Arroyo, Jose Barea and Renaldo Balkman amongst others, controlled the tempo and victory seemed like a stroll in the park. By the third...   [read more]
