6-9 centre Shawn Lawrence guided Maloney is Wee Basketball Team to a convincing 99-65 win over Arima Oilers in the inaugural Ministry of National Securitys Hoop of Life Basketball league on Thursday night.

The competition bounced off with the National Security Minister Jack Warner meeting the players and jumping the ball to start the contest in front of an appreciative home crowd at Maloney Gardens.

With over $1m up for grabs in prize money, Maloney began the battle in a dominant mood controlling the game, 19-11, 43-24 and 70-41 by the end of the third period. Meanwhile during the third session, Maloney 6-7 centre Keivan Bacquain excited the fans at the Maloney Outdoor Court with a massive dunk which broke the ring.

Following the delay the officials shifted the game to the adjacent Maloney Indoor Sport Arena. On the resumption, Maloney maintained its advantage with Bacquian getting 12points and 7rebs. Other support for the home team came from forward Kern George with 22pts which included four shots from beyond the three-point line.

For Oilers, Randy Greenidge top scored with a double-double of 18 pts & 10rebs plus 4 steals. The action will continue with other matches scheduled at various venues from Friday.

FORMER NATIONAL stand-out Stephen 'Lighter' Lewis walked away with the coveted Most Valuable Player award in the Premier Division at the bpTT Mayaro Basketball League's 2016 prize distribution, recently. Joey Haywood agreed terms with Halifax Hurricanes - 10 days ago
Halifax Hurricanes (NBL Canada) inked 33-year old former Trinidad and Tobago international point guard Joey Haywood (185-82kg-84, college: St.Mary's) from Halifax Rainmen. In 45 NBL Canada games he recorded 11.5ppg, 2.5rpg and 2.1apg in 2014-15 season. He helped them to win the NBL Atlantic Division title (twice) (also twice).
