La Romaine defeats Lady Hailes in CBL - Dec 22, 2012

Forward Kyle Sargeant and point guard Dereck Boxill both sank 19 points to hand La Romaine a 76-61 win over Lady Hailes Avenue, when competition continued in South Sector Two of the Hoop of Life Community Basketball League on Thursday.

The match was staged in front of a sizeable home crowd at the Lady Hailes Avenue Basketball Court in San Fernando. However, it was the visitors who started brighter. La Romaine, aiming to maintain its unbeaten record, jumped out with a 21-14 first quarter lead which stretched to 35-28 at the half. Lady Hailes attempted a surge in the third period and managed to close the gap to four points, but La Romaine again responded strongly with an 8-1 run which saw the period end 58-48 in favour of the away team.

In the fourth session, the teams traded baskets but Lady Hailes needed its defence to salvage a win, which never happened. In the end, it was Sargeant and Boxill, together with Henry Grants ten-point total which proved too big a task for the home team.

For the losing team, Richard Julien continued his scoring prowess with 19 points and three rebounds, while Kevin Garcia added 12 points and secured ten rebounds for a double-double. He also made seven steals.

In South Sector Three, Cap de Ville Hoppers pulled off a stunning 57-55 win over Gonzales Blazers, courtesy of a lay-up from forward Sheldon Philandez in the final seconds of the match.

Playing at the Cap De Ville Basketball Court, Point Fortin, Philandez finished the match with just four points but it was Sheldon Lewis 11 points and three rebounds that led the way to victory.

For Gonzales, Andy Germin was the matchs top scorer with 13 points and four rebounds, while Devon Alexander chipped in with nine points and three rebounds.

At Cumana, Mikahil Williams and Mavin Hayes scored 14 and 11 points, respectively, for Sangre Grande Knights in its 71-37 blowout of Cumana Nets.

The visiting Sangre Grande team led 18-12 and 33-16 after the first two periods, before it swelled the difference to 26 points at 51-25, with one period remaining. It was Grande Knights second win in three matches.
For the winless Cumana, Randy James and Mikel Courtney scored 13 apiece.
