CBCU16 - Aruba top Trinidad and Tobago for easy victory

Winterdal looks to make a pass during his 24-point performance for Aruba

A total team effort and timely shots from Leonardo Winterdal helped Aruba defeat Trinidad and Tobago 77-59 on Monday when the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) under-16 male championship continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.

Less than 24 hours ago Aruba suffered a nail-biting loss to Guyana and bounced back nicely, showing heart and toughness in the win.

Aruba survived a big game from Trinidad's Jordan Persad who scored the tournament's highest individual score thus far with 34 points.

Winterdal was a man on a mission, hitting six of his 12 triples for 24 points to combat Persad's scoring outburst.

Earlier, Persad was the unquestioned leader in the first half for Trinidad and Tobago, dazzling with his wide offensive arsenal as he exploited Aruba's defence with pull-up triples, mid-range jumpers, dribble penetrations and floaters to give the twin island republic a 44-36 halftime. Persad had 30 first half points.

Meanwhile, Aruba simply could not contain Persad but kept the game competitive by being able to rebound the ball well for second chance points.

In the third quarter, Persad was off his game, hitting one of his nine shots in the period while Aruba scrapped their way back with a number of garbage points to ties game at 50 by the end of the third period.

Persad's cold streak continued in the fourth as he would only score two points in the fourth and four points in the entire second half when Aruba clamped down defensively on Persad in the second half.

Andre Bryson was also a major contributor to Aruba's win with 23 points and 11 rebounds while Jevahno Madura notched a double-double as well with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Quentan Milton dropped 12 points and 10 rebounds to help Aruba's win.

Scoring for Trinidad besides Persad was Christopher Nottingham with 11 points.
