BRENTWOOD, Tenn. - A pair of commanding performances during a University of Tennessee at Martin sweep resulted in Javier Martinez (201-F-93) winning the adidas Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week award, as announced today by the league office.

Martinez's OVC mention marks the second straight week that a Skyhawk has taken home the league's top award, following Jacolby Mobley's win last Monday. It is the first career OVC Player of the Week honor for Martinez, who becomes the 17th player in UT Martin history to garner the award.

A 6-7, 210-pound forward, Martinez went off for averages of 20.0 points and 16.5 rebounds per game while sinking 72 percent (18-for-25) of his field goal attempts. He helped lead the Skyhawks to a 75-46 win at Tennessee Tech on Wednesday and an 85-68 home victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, which lifted UT Martin into sole possession in the OVC West division standings.

Last Wednesday, Martinez became the first player in the Skyhawks' Division-I Era (since 1992) to record a 20-20 game when he piled up 22 points and a career-best 21 rebounds at Tennessee Tech. He was just the 11th Division-I player to accomplish that feat in 2016-17 while his 21 boards equaled the single-game Division-I school record.

Three days later against Eastern Kentucky, Martinez wrapped up his seventh double-double of the season with 18 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. It marked the fifth time that the senior out of St. Croix, Virgin Islands accumulated a double-double against an OVC opponent this season.

Martinez currently ranks second in the OVC in field goal percentage (.647) while also ranking in the top-10 in offensive rebounding (2.8 per game, fourth) and overall rebounding (7.8 per game, eighth). In OVC play, he ranks second in the league with 9.8 rebounds per outing.

With preseason coming to end, the uncertainty of the regular season is looming overhead. If nothing else, Hawks fans can be certain in one thing: John Collins(208-F-97, college: Wake Forest) is the real deal. Drafted 19th overall in June, Collins has been on a mission ever since to show the NBA that he went too low. As soon as the Atlanta Hawks drafted him, Hawks fans poured over his film from his time at Wake Forest, and that's when the excitement ensued. Then he got his first NBA expe...   [read more]

Roster cuts ahead for Jazz, with Royce O'Neale, Joel Bolomboy looking for last spot - 4 days ago
For a few players on the Utah Jazz training camp roster, it could be a tough weekend. By Monday, the Jazz must have their roster whittled down to 15, plus two players on two-way contracts. As of Friday, the team had 19 on its roster, with Eric Griffin and Nate Wolters on two-way deals. That means two players will likely be cut over the weekend. It's expected that the Jazz will waive Nazareth Mitrou-Long, a guard out of Iowa State who played light minutes this preseason. The Tribune has le...   [read more]

The Wolves announced they have waived three players: Amile Jefferson, Melo Trimble, and yesterday's signing Shawne Williams. All three are now NBA free agents, but appear likely to start the season with the Wolves G-League affiliate in Iowa. Jefferson and Trimble were both signed this summer as undrafted rookie free agents. Jefferson a power forward from Duke, was on the Wolves summer league team and earned a camp invite. He's gotten a long look, and will have a chance to impress in the...   [read more]
