Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuela's U15 NT traveled to Trinidad, Uruguay, to play in the 2010 U15 South American Championship, which will grant the three top teams the possibility of playing in the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Tournament, which grants spots for the FIBA World Cup.
The South American Championship will be played from November 16th till the 20th. Venezuela will be coached by Alecia Landaeta with Bricman Morales as assistant coach. The team has trained for several weeks in Caracas and took part in LINABAFE's regular season as a franchise against older and more experienced players.
'We're very focused in the mission that we need to accomplish', said player Keisy Ford prior to the trip. 'We want to put Venezuela's name at the top in this championship. We've gone through a long process of hard preparation in which we played several friendly matches against teams and squads older than us, so we think we're able to face strong opponents such as Argentina, Brazil or Uruguay. Our team is fast and has great defense', she added.
'The team is like a family and we're convinced we can accomplish our goals', said Maholy Lovera. 'We've prepared ourselves enough to be among the three top teams. As opposed to other national teams, we've got very good height, great defense and offensive efficiency with good long-distance shooters. We hope to reach the finals against Brazil, which we think will be the team to beat in this tournament'.
Coach Landaeta is no different to this statements. 'To tell you the truth, we're convinced we can reach the top. We've improved a lot in technical and tactical aspects of our game as we were able to play LINABAFE matches. We'll play a few other games to make the final adjustments and our girls are aware of the work that has to be done, so they're very united. We want to win and we'll do it no matter who we play against'.
