Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan SF-PF Michael Carrera (198-F-93), one of the best young talents of the country and recent graduate from Montrose Christian High School in Rockville, Maryland, wrote in his personal account on Twitter that has already made up his mind about which college to play for in the NCAA Division 1 for the 2012-2013 season, but will not make it public just yet.
Carrera was originally included in a 29-player list by the Venezuelan Basketball Federation to go and work for the Senior NT staff and try to earn a spot for the South American Championship in Argentina and the FIBA Olympic Qualy Tournament at El Poliedro in Caracas, Venezuela, but chose not to attend so he could focus on selecting the right college, alongside his family.
He was a huge part of the recent success of Montrose at the high school level, winning a national championship in the 2010-2011 season in the same place where fellow Venezuelan Greivis Vasquez (197-PG-87) started his career, as well as another NBA caliber player, Linas Kleiza (203-F-85).
Carrera will join a list of Venezuelans playing for Division 1 teams that include Gregory Echenique (210-C-90) of Creighton, Anthony Perez (203-F-93) of Ole Mississippi, Juan Coronado (198-F-90) of Liberty, Dennison Rodriguez (202-F-89) of Georgia State and possibly Kevin Portillo, the son of former Senior NT player Cesar Portillo (206-C-68), currently playing for La Salle High School in Miami, Florida. Danny Herrera (193-F-92), who played for Duquesne, will transfer to the NJCAA level playing for the Miami Dade Junior College Sharks.
