Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan PG Greivis Vasquez (197-PG-87) has impressed everybody by doing what he does best: playing smart basketball, banking important shots, giving unbelievable assists to teammates in a better position to shot and reducing the amount of turnovers as the starting PG of the New Orleans Hornets, who've begun the season with a 2-1 record, thanks to victories over the Utah Jazz as hosts (88-86) and the Chicago Bulls as visitors (89-82).

Vasquez, a 25 year-old PG who's beginning his third full season in the NBA and second with New Orleans, has understood himself as a starter with bigger responsabilities than ever. He began with a 13-assists performance in a defeat against the San Antonio Spurs (99-95) in a game in which he shot a late three-pointer that could have turned things around, but he was unable to score it.

Then, against Utah, he had a double double night with 13 points and 10 assists, including a two-point layup with the game tied and 1.6 seconds left, giving his team a victory despites a strong effort by the visitors.

Then along came the game at United Center in Chicago, in which he began with 7 straight misses from the field prior to scoring 10 points in the second quarter to eventually finish the game as the team's top scorer, with 18 points, adding 6 assists and 4 rebounds.

He's now averaging 13.0 points, 9.7 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game with only 3.0 turnovers per game, in comparison with a 4.2 average during the preseason. While Eric Gordon (193-G-88) is out and given the recent injury of Anthony Davis (208-C-93), Vasquez will for sure have to run the team but also score a lot, if New Orleans wants to get ahead and start being competitive this season.

Despite Cubillan's good performance the league leader Flamengo was badly defeated 89-72 on the road by the lower-ranked (#4) Mogi.    [read more]
