Barquisimeto, Venezuela.- Venezuelan C Gregory Echenique (206-C-90) got close to a double double with an effort of 9 points and 13 rebounds -plus 5 blocks- but his No. 12 Creighton Blue Jays were surprisingly defeated by non-seeded Wichita State, 67-64, as visitors, in Wichita, Kansas.

Echenique played 29 minutes, netted 3 of 5 two-point shots and 3 of 7 free-throws, grabbed 13 rebounds, blocked 5 shots, had a couple of turnovers and fouled once. However, Wichita ended Creighton's 11-game winning streak.

Wichita's top scorer was Carl Hall (203-F-89), who came off the bench to score 17 points and grab 13 boards. Malcolm Armstead (183-PG-89) added 15 points. For the Blue Jays, Doug McDermott (203-F-92) netted 25 points and Grant Gibbs (196-G-89) finished up with 14.

Echenique's averages are now 10.1 points, 7.5 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game in 19 regular season games. Creighton's overall record is 17-2.

Meanwhile, SF-PF Michael Carrera (196-F-93), a rookie for the South Carolina Gamecocks, scored 8 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in his team's defeat against Vanderbilt, 58-51. Carrera played 27 minutes and finished up with 4 fouls, a steal, a block and a couple of turnovers. He netted 3 of 9 two-point shots and 2 of 3 free-throws. He's averaging 10.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 0.9 assists per game in 12 regular season games so far.

Juan Coronado (203-F-90), a rookie PF-C for the Liberty Flames, went scoreless but totalled 5 rebounds, a steal and a block in 18 minutes of play. His team lost against Presbyterian, 68-60. Coronado is averaging 5.3 points, 8.5 rebounds and 0.7 assists per game in 19 regular season games.

Denny Burguillos (201-F-89), of the Georgia State Panthers, averages 1.6 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in 16 games as a sub in his first year in the NCAA. Anthony Perez (206-F-93) is averaging 2.3 points, 1.4 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game in 15 games in his rookie season with the Ole Mississippi Rebels.

Gigantes de Guayana (LPB) signed experienced 34-year old American small forward Quinnel Brown (198-95kg-83, college: Auburn). It is actually his comeback to Puerto Ordaz as he has played here before. Brown just played at Windsor Express in Canadian NBL. In 18 NBL Canada games he had 14.9ppg, 6.8rpg and 2.5apg this season. Brown also played earlier that season for Gigantes. 24-year old Venezuelan international forward Anthony Perez (206-97kg-93, college: Mississippi). He played for Soles in Mexican LNBP, but left. In 32 games he had 8.6ppg, 3.3rpg and 1.8apg this season. Perez's college team, Ole Miss, won SEC Tournament in 2013. He has been also a member of Venezuelan international program for some years.
