Jose Vargas selected the top Venezuelan playing abroad in last week's games - Feb 26, 2017

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad.


Jose Vargas

   #1. This week's number one is an experienced international swingman Jose Vargas (195-82, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Liga Americas). Vargas could not help La Union (0-2) in their last game on Saturday. Despite his very good performance the fourth-placed La Union (0-2) was defeated 82-72 at home by the second-ranked Guaros in the group E of Liga Americas. Vargas was the top scorer with 16 points. He also added 4 rebounds and dished 3 assists (was perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line). Vargas' team will play only one more game in the Liga Americas Second Stage. And that game will be critical. It's Vargas' first season with the team. He has relatively good stats this year: 10.4ppg, 3.8rpg, 1.6apg and FT: 90.9%. Ex-Trotamundos de Carabobo player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Israel). Vargas led Maccabi Haifa to an easy victory against the closely-ranked Hapoel Jerusalem (12-9) 86-69 in the Israeli Winner League on Sunday night. He recorded 11 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists in 34 minutes. Maccabi Hunter Haifa (9-10) is placed eighth in the Winner League. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. This year Vargas has relatively solid stats: 13.6ppg, 5.3rpg, 7.1apg, 1.6spg, 2FGP: 53.1%, 3FGP: 27.3% and FT: 55.2% in seven games he played so far. Ex-Protectores de Miranda BBC player is in the roster of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, another player represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). He managed to help Libertad Sunchales to win against the eighth-ranked Penarol (7-10) 85-66 in the Argentinian LigaA on Wednesday night. Ruiz scored only 3 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Libertad Sunchales (18-17) is placed sixth in Norte group. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. This season Ruiz averages: 5.9ppg, 7.4rpg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 53.8% and FT: 61.7%. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #4. Forward Juan Coronado (203-90, college: Liberty, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to help Huracan (15-12) in their last game. Despite Coronado's good performance Huracan (#4) lost 74-79 on the road to the lower-ranked (#7) La Union in the South group. He scored 12 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 29 minutes. They ended the series of ten consecutive victories. The Regular Season already ended. Coronado has reliable stats this year: 12.6ppg and 8.6rpg in nine games. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #5. Former international forward Lenin Lopez (198-91, currently plays in Chile) was not able to secure a victory for Puente Alto (11-23) in their game against CD Tinguiririca San Fernando (11-23) in the Chilean Liga Nacional. Lopez scored 8 points, had 5 rebounds, passed 5 assists and added 2 blocks. Puente Alto (#4) was defeated 82-78 in San Fernando by the lower-ranked CD Tinguiririca (#5) in the Conferencia Centro. It was Puente Alto's third consecutive loss in a row. The Elimination Round already ended. Lopez has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 16.0ppg, 8.1rpg, 2.9apg, 1.1bpg and 1.6spg. Lopez used to play for the Venezuelan national team three years ago.

   #6. Guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Palencia Baloncesto's victory against the closely-ranked Gipuzkoa (17-8) 92-83 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) on Friday night. He recorded 5 points in 20 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 4 ranked teams. Quesos Cerrato de Palencia (17-8) is placed first in the LEB Gold. Zamora's stats this year are: 10.8ppg, 2.6rpg and 1.7apg in 25 games. He is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team two years ago.

Former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, agency: Duran International, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) helped Azuqueca win their game against the 16th-ranked Viten Getafe Fuenlabrada (2-18) 69-56 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) on Saturday night. He scored only 2 points. Isover Basket Azuqueca (14-7) is placed fourth in Group B. It was his team's sixth consecutive victory in a row. Valera's stats this season are: 12.2ppg and 7.0rpg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team two years ago.

   #8. Guard Jose Jimenez (193, currently plays in NAIA) couldn't help the Faulkner University (10-7) in their game against the Martin Methodist College in the NAIA. He scored 7 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. The Faulkner University was edged 66-65 in Pulaski by the Martin Methodist College. Jimenez's team will play only one more game in the NAIA Regular Season. And now that game is quite important. Jimenez averaged so far 10.6ppg, 5.3rpg, 2.6apg and 1.1spg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Calvin Cage (183-PG-84, college: Buffalo, currently plays in Lebanon) could not help Mayrouba (3-10) in their last game. Despite his very good performance Mayrouba lost 72-86 at home to the league outsider (#10) Hoops Club. Cage was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 4 assists in 36 minutes. It was Mayrouba's fifth consecutive loss in a row. Cage has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 21.5ppg, 3.1rpg and 5.1apg in eight games he played so far.

   #2. Clarence Matthews (201-PF-83, college: Tennessee St., currently plays in Uruguay) was not able to help Goes in their game against Union Atletica (7-5) in the Uruguayan LUB. He scored 7 points, had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It was his first game for Goes this season. his team was defeated 97-91 in a derby game by the lower-ranked Union Atletica (#4) in the Promocional 2 group. The Second Stage already ended. Matthews is a naturalized American. He used to play for Gigantes de Guayana in Venezuelan league.

   #3. Jovanni Diaz (195-G-92, currently plays in Chile) was not able to secure a victory for Puente Alto (11-23) in their last game. Despite Diaz's very good performance Puente Alto (#4) was edged 76-74 on the road by the lower-ranked (#6) Universidad Catolica in the Conferencia Centro. He had a double-double by scoring 23 points and getting 18 rebounds. Diaz also added 2 blocks in 44 minutes. It was Puente Alto's third consecutive loss in a row. The Elimination Round already ended. Diaz has very impressive stats this year: 19.3ppg, 10.0rpg, 1.8apg and 1.5spg in 26 games.

   #4. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) managed to help Osorno Basquetbol to win against the fourth-ranked Las Animas (16-18) 81-76 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Saturday night's game. Fontena recorded only 3 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. Fontena's stats this season are: 10.8ppg, 6.9rpg and 1.3apg. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #5. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain) couldn't help AEC Collblanc (10-7) in their game against Salt (11-6) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). Melgarejo was the second best scorer with 9 points in 17 minutes. But AEC Collblanc (#5) was crushed 76-45 on their home court in LĀ“Hospitalet by the higher-ranked (#4) Salt in the Group C-A. This year Melgarejo averages only 5.6ppg in seven games.

   #6. Victor Diaz Jr. (190-G, currently plays in NAIA) contributed to a Southwestern Christian University's victory against the John Brown University 55-51 in the NAIA in Saturday night's game. Diaz Jr. scored only one point in 9 minutes on the court. This year Diaz Jr.'s overall stats are: 3.1ppg and 2.1rpg in 22 games.

   #7. Manuel Hernandez (206-C, currently plays in NAIA) helped Huston-Tillotson University win their game against the Louisiana State University-Shreveport 104-97 in the NAIA on Saturday night. Hernandez scored only 3 points in 9 minutes on the court. This year Hernandez's overall stats are: 4.0ppg and 8.9rpg in 22 games.

   #8. Kilder Gonzalez (188-G, currently plays in NAIA) couldn't help the St.Gregory's University in their game against the SW Assemblies of God University in the NAIA. He scored 5 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. His team was defeated 77-66 in the NAIA. Gonzalez's overall stats this season are: 6.6ppg, 3.9rpg and 1.2apg.

Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece Basket (BSL) landed 30-year old American forward Diamon Simpson (204-104kg-87, college: St.Mary's, CA). He played most recently at Trotamundos in Venezuelan LPB league. Simpson managed to play in four leagues in three countries last year (!!!). In 8 LPB games he averaged 6.1ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.0apg. He also played that season for Maccabi Fox Tel-Aviv in Israeli league where in 6 Euroleague games he had 9.2ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.2apg, 1.5spg and 1.0bpg. The other team Simps...   [read more]

Union Poitiers Basket 86 (ProB) added to their roster 24-year old American guard Ricky Tarrant (188-86kg-93, college: Memphis). He played last season at Gigantes in Venezuelan LPB league. In 23 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.3ppg, 3.1rpg and 3.3apg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was voted to Latinbasket.com All-Venezuelan LPB Honorable Mention. Tarrant also played that season for Titans in Canadian NBL Canada where in 15 games he averaged remarkable 18.7ppg, 4.3rpg   [read more]
