Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Israel). He led Maccabi Haifa to a victory over the closely-ranked Hapoel Eilat (12-10) 81-72 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. Vargas was MVP of the game. He recorded 23 points, 4 assists and 3 steals in 29 minutes on the court. Maccabi Hunter Haifa (11-11) is placed sixth in the Winner League. The Regular Season already ended. It's Vargas' first season with the team. Vargas has relatively good stats this year: 14.6ppg, 5.8rpg, 6.8apg, 1.7spg, 2FGP: 52.2%, 3FGP: 28.6% and FT: 62.2% in nine games he played so far. Ex-Protectores de Miranda BBC player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Francisco Centeno (201-85, currently plays in Chile). Centeno was the main contributor in an AB Ancud's victory against the third-ranked Deportivo Valdivia (18-12) 74-69 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Saturday night's game. He was the best player in that game. Centeno scored 27 points (!!!), had 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Conferencia Sur. Asociacion Basquetbol Ancud (0-2) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. Centeno has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 19.9ppg, 7.2rpg, 2.1apg, 1.2spg, 2FGP: 58.8%(228-388), 3FGP: 35.5% and FT: 62.5%. Centeno played for the Venezuelan national team in 2012.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, agency: Duran International, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain). He contributed to Azuqueca's victory against the sixth-ranked Nautico KIA Tenerife (13-8) 97-89 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. Valera was the top player that evening. He scored 29 points (!!!) and grabbed 7 rebounds in 30 minutes. Isover Basket Azuqueca (15-8) is placed fifth in Group B. This year Valera has relatively solid stats: 12.7ppg, 7.0rpg, 3FGP: 37.3% and FT: 72.3% in 23 games. He played for the Venezuelan national team two years ago.

   #4. Guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Palencia Baloncesto's victory against the closely-ranked Leyma Basquet (16-11) 79-75 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Friday night's game. Zamora scored 16 points in 34 minutes. Quesos Cerrato de Palencia (18-9) is placed fourth in the LEB Gold. Zamora has reliable stats this year: 11.0ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.6apg in 27 games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2015.

International forward Juan Coronado (203-90, college: Liberty, currently plays in Argentina) helped Huracan win their game against the second-ranked Ciclista (18-13) 81-71 in the Argentinian TNA (second division) last Sunday. Coronado recorded 16 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks; quite an impressive performance considering it's only his third season in pro basketball. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group South. Huracan Trelew (17-12) is placed third. The Regular Season already ended. Coronado's stats this season are: 12.5ppg and 8.6rpg. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

   #6. Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) managed to help Libertad Sunchales in a victory against the fourth-ranked Instituto (23-16) 86-77 in the Argentinian LigaA on Friday night. Ruiz scored only 3 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. Libertad Sunchales (19-19) is placed seventh in Norte group. This year Ruiz's overall stats are: 5.9ppg, 7.4rpg and 1.2spg in 38 games. He is an international player who is currently on the senior Venezuelan National Team roster.

The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Clarence Matthews (201-PF-83, college: Tennessee St., currently plays in Uruguay) led Goes to an easy victory against the eighth-ranked Trouville (2-12) crushing them 91-68 in a derby game in the Uruguayan LUB last Friday. He recorded a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 11 rebounds. Goes Montevideo (18-10) is placed in Promocional 2 group. This season Matthews has relatively solid stats: 10.3ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.8apg. He is a naturalized American. Matthews used to play for Gigantes de Guayana in Venezuelan league.

   #2. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) could not help Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) in their last game. Despite his very good performance the first-placed Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) lost 87-94 on the road to the lower-ranked (#4) Las Animas in the Conferencia Sur. Fontena was the top scorer with 24 points. He also added 7 rebounds in 31 minutes. This year Fontena has relatively solid stats: 11.1ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.3apg in 43 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #3. Calvin Cage (183-PG-84, college: Buffalo, currently plays in Lebanon) was not able to help Mayrouba in their game against Homenetmen (14-1) in the Lebanese Pepsi LBL. Cage scored 9 points and added 3 passes. But the bottom-ranked Mayrouba was badly defeated 96-77 in Beirut by the leading Homenetmen. It was Mayrouba's eighth consecutive loss in a row. There are only two games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Cage has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 18.4ppg, 3.2rpg and 4.8apg.

   #4. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for AEC Collblanc (10-8) in their game against Martorell (14-5) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). Melgarejo recorded 8 points. The sixth-placed AEC Collblanc (10-8) was crushed 89-59 on the opponent's court by the second-ranked Martorell in the Group C-A. It was AEC Collblanc's third consecutive loss in a row. This season Melgarejo averages only 5.9ppg.

   #5. Victor Diaz Jr. (190-G, currently plays in NAIA) managed to help Southwestern Christian University in a victory against the Mid-America Christian University (7-11) 87-73 in the NAIA last Thursday. He scored only 4 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 21 minutes. The Southwestern Christian University has a solid 11-7 record this season. The Regular Season already ended in the NAIA. This year Diaz Jr.'s total stats are: 3.7ppg and 2.5rpg in 31 games.   

Axiers Sucre
Sucre number one in Venezuela for round 7 - 3 hours ago
Former international Forward Axiers Sucre (199-F-78) put on an amazing game in the last round for second-ranked Gigantes, receiving a Player of the Week award for round 7. The 38-year old player had a double-double of 25 points and 15 rebounds, while his team edged out Toros (#5, 3-7) 96-94. Gigantes maintains the 2nd position in their group in Venezuelan LPB. There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with defeat of the leader and favorites losing the games. The most crucial game of the last round was another loss of top-ranked Bucaneros (8-6) in Barquisimeto on Sunday night. Visitors were edged by third ranked Guaros (3-5) 92-90. Guaros dominated down low during the game scoring 62 of its points in the paint compared to Bucaneros' 26. Panteras de Miranda (LPB) inked experienced 34-year old American power forward Anthony Kent (208-102kg-83, college: Ball State). He played recently at Welcome in Uruguayan LUB league. In 14 games he recorded very impressive stats: 19.4ppg, 10.6rpg, 2.5apg and 1.4bpg this season. Kent also played earlier that season for another team Knicks in U.S. semi-pro league D-League where in four LUB games he averaged 3.8ppg and 1.8rpg.
