Gregory Vargas selected the top Venezuelan playing abroad in last week's games - Mar 19, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Gregory Vargas

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Israel). He led Maccabi Haifa to a victory over the closely-ranked Hapoel Eilat (12-10) 81-72 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. Vargas was MVP of the game. He recorded 23 points, 4 assists and 3 steals in 29 minutes on the court. Maccabi Hunter Haifa (11-11) is placed sixth in the Winner League. It's Vargas' first season with the team. Vargas has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.4ppg, 5.5rpg, 6.5apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 50.6%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 64.3% in 10 games he played so far. Ex-Protectores de Miranda BBC player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Francisco Centeno

   #2. Second place goes to former international swingman Francisco Centeno (201-85, currently plays in Chile). He could not help AB Ancud (0-2) in their last game. Despite Centeno's very good performance the first-placed AB Ancud (0-2) was edged 95-92 on the road by the leading Osorno Basquetbol in the Conferencia Sur. He was the top scorer with 32 points. Centeno also added 4 rebounds in 35 minutes. Centeno has very impressive stats this year: 20.2ppg, 7.1rpg, 2.0apg, 1.1spg, 2FGP: 59.3%(243-410), 3FGP: 35.4% and FT: 62.5% in 37 games. He played for the Venezuelan national team in 2012.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was former international forward Luis Valera (202-88, agency: Duran International, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain). Valera was the main contributor in Azuqueca's victory against the sixth-ranked Nautico KIA Tenerife (14-8) 97-89 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. He was the best player in that game. Valera scored 29 points (!!!) and grabbed 7 rebounds in 30 minutes. Isover Basket Azuqueca (15-8) is placed fifth in Group B. Valera has relatively good stats this year: 12.7ppg, 7.0rpg, 3FGP: 37.3% and FT: 72.3% in 23 games. He played for the Venezuelan national team two years ago.

   #4. Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to help Libertad Sunchales in their game against Estudiantes Concordia (29-13) in the Argentinian LigaA. Ruiz did not beat the league record on Friday evening. He scored only 2 points and grabbed 7 rebounds. Libertad Sunchales (#7) was defeated 81-72 in Concordia by the second-ranked Estudiantes in the Norte group. Ruiz's overall stats this season are: 5.8ppg, 7.4rpg and 1.2spg. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #5. Former international guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a Palencia Baloncesto's victory against the league outsider Marin (6-22) 84-74 in the Spanish LEB Gold (second division) in Saturday night's game. Zamora recorded 9 points in 22 minutes. Quesos Cerrato de Palencia (19-9) is placed third in the LEB Gold. This year Zamora has relatively solid stats: 10.9ppg, 2.4rpg and 1.6apg in 28 games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team two years ago.


The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Experienced Clarence Matthews (201-PF-83, college: Tennessee St., currently plays in Uruguay) could not help Goes (18-10) in their last game on Friday. Despite Matthews' very good performance his team was edged 79-77 in a derby game by the much lower-ranked Trouville (#8) in the Promocional 2 group. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Matthews also added 7 rebounds and 4 blocks. Matthews has relatively good stats this season: 11.5ppg, 7.5rpg and 1.7apg. He is a naturalized American. Matthews used to play for Gigantes de Guayana in Venezuelan league.

   #2. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) led Osorno Basquetbol to a victory against the fourth-ranked Las Animas (16-18) 92-80 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Wednesday night's game. Fontena recorded 15 points, 7 rebounds and 2 blocks. Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. Fontena has relatively good stats this season: 11.2ppg, 7.0rpg and 1.4apg. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #3. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain) was not able to help AEC Collblanc in their game against Olivar (9-12) in the Spanish EBA (fourth division). Melgarejo cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. He scored only one point. AEC Collblanc (#7) was badly defeated 77-60 on the road by the lower-ranked Olivar (#9) in the Group C-A. It was AEC Collblanc's fifth consecutive loss in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This season Melgarejo averages only 4.9ppg.

   #4. Victor Diaz Jr. (190-G, currently plays in NAIA) was not able to secure a victory for the Southwestern Christian University (11-7) in their game against the Central Baptist College (14-8) in the NAIA. He cannot count Saturday's game as one of the best ones. Diaz Jr. recorded only 2 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in 12 minutes. The Southwestern Christian University lost 72-78 in Conway to the Central Baptist College. The Regular Season already ended in the NAIA. This year Diaz Jr.'s overall stats are: 3.7ppg and 2.6rpg in 32 games he played so far.   




Isaiah Swann
Swann number one in Venezuela for round 19 - 1 day ago
American Point guard Isaiah Swann (188-PG-85) had a great game in the last round for Marinos, receiving a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 19. The 31-year old player was the main contributor (47 points and five assists) to his team's victory, helping them to outclass Gaiteros (#5, 7-23) with 61-point margin 120-59. Marinos maintains the 4th position in their group in Venezuelan LPB. Marinos is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit low...   [read more]

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is an experienced international guard John Cox (194-81, agency: Pensack Sports). He could not help Pau-Lacq-Orthez (22-12) in their last game. Despite Cox's very good performance Pau-Lacq-Orthez was edged 85-82 on the road by the much lower-ranked (#13) JDA Dijon.    [read more]

Vaqueros of Bayamon inks the swingman D.J. Stephens(198-G/F-90, college: Memphis). Stephens is know for his huge vertical jump and explosiveness. He played in DLeague and won the Slam Dunk contest. With his athleticism he can rebound, score, block shots and play multiple positions. He arrive in a crucial moment for Vaqueros of Bayamon that are fighting for one of the eight spots for the playoffs. Also Bayamon bring back Jaleel Akindele hoping to improve in the paint area.   [read more]
