Gregory Vargas selected the top Venezuelan playing abroad in last week's games - Apr 2, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.


Gregory Vargas

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Israel). He could not help Maccabi Haifa (12-12) in their last game. Despite Vargas' good performance Maccabi Haifa lost 69-78 on the road to the lower-ranked (#8) Ironi Nahariya. He scored 12 points, had 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists in 35 minutes on the court. It was Maccabi Haifa's first loss after three consecutive victories. It's Vargas' first season with the team. Vargas has relatively good stats this year: 15.0ppg, 5.3rpg, 6.4apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 51.6%, 3FGP: 33.3% and FT: 67.4% in 12 games he played so far. Ex-Protectores de Miranda BBC player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Jose Materan

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina). He managed to help Weber Bahia Blanca Basket to win against the fifth-ranked Argentino (22-22) crushing them 108-65 in the Argentinian LigaA last Monday. Materan scored 5 points. Weber Bahia Blanca Basket (23-16) is placed third in Sur group. This season Materan averages: 2.5ppg, 2FGP: 33.3%, 3FGP: 25.0%. He is in the roster of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was former international swingman Francisco Centeno (201-85, currently plays in Chile). Centeno was not able to help AB Ancud (0-2) in their last game on Sunday. Despite his very good performance the first-placed AB Ancud (0-2) was defeated 70-65 at home by the leading Osorno Basquetbol in the Conferencia Sur. Centeno was the top scorer with 22 points. He also added 5 rebounds. Centeno has individually a very good season with high stats. He averages: 20.3ppg, 7.1rpg, 2.1apg, 1.1spg, 3FGP: 35.2% and FT: 61.8%. Centeno played for the Venezuelan national team five years ago.

   #4. Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) was not able to secure a victory for Libertad Sunchales (21-21) in their game against Atenas (17-25) in the Argentinian LigaA. He scored 5 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in 19 minutes. Libertad Sunchales (#7) lost 71-86 in Cordoba to the lower-ranked (#9) Atenas in the Norte group. This year Ruiz's overall stats are: 5.7ppg, 7.3rpg and 1.2spg in 42 games. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #5. International forward Juan Coronado (203-90, college: Liberty, currently plays in Argentina) couldn't help Huracan (20-16) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Coronado's very good performance Huracan (#4) was badly defeated 89-73 in Carmen de Patagones by the lower-ranked Atenas (#5) in the South group. He recorded a double-double by scoring 15 points and getting 13 rebounds. The Regular Season already ended. This season Coronado has relatively solid stats: 12.9ppg and 8.9rpg. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

Luis Valera

   #6. Forward Luis Valera (202-88, agency: Duran International, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) contributed to Azuqueca's victory against the leader Real Canoe (20-6) 85-78 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. He recorded 5 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Isover Basket Azuqueca (17-9) is placed fifth in Group B. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Valera has reliable stats this season: 12.0ppg and 6.7rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team two years ago.

   #1. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) was the major contributor in an Osorno Basquetbol's victory against the second-ranked AB Ancud (19-13) 70-65 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Sunday night. Fontena had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 13 rebounds in 32 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Conferencia Sur. Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. This year Fontena has relatively solid stats: 11.3ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.3apg in 48 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #2. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain). Melgarejo could not help AEC Collblanc (10-11) to beat Cornella (12-11). He recorded 5 points and added 5 assists in 22 minutes. AEC Collblanc (#8) lost 75-87 at home to the higher-ranked (#6) Cornella in the Group C-A. It was AEC Collblanc's sixth consecutive loss in a row. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. This year Melgarejo averages only 4.9ppg in 11 games.

American Point guard Isaiah Swann (188-PG-85) had a great game in the last round for Marinos, receiving a Latinbasket.com Player of the Week award for round 19. The 31-year old player was the main contributor (47 points and five assists) to his team's victory, helping them to outclass Gaiteros (#5, 7-23) with 61-point margin 120-59. Marinos maintains the 4th position in their group in Venezuelan LPB. Marinos is a typical solid league team placed somewhere in the middle or a little bit low...   [read more]

Here is the weekly review of the top performing Venezuelan players, who play currently abroad. This week's number one is an experienced international guard John Cox (194-81, agency: Pensack Sports). He could not help Pau-Lacq-Orthez (22-12) in their last game. Despite Cox's very good performance Pau-Lacq-Orthez was edged 85-82 on the road by the much lower-ranked (#13) JDA Dijon.    [read more]

Vaqueros of Bayamon inks the swingman D.J. Stephens(198-G/F-90, college: Memphis). Stephens is know for his huge vertical jump and explosiveness. He played in DLeague and won the Slam Dunk contest. With his athleticism he can rebound, score, block shots and play multiple positions. He arrive in a crucial moment for Vaqueros of Bayamon that are fighting for one of the eight spots for the playoffs. Also Bayamon bring back Jaleel Akindele hoping to improve in the paint area.   [read more]
