Traditionally, every week we bring you a list of the top performances of Venezuelans who are currently playing abroad.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, agency: Pro Sports, currently plays in Israel). He was the major contributor in a 2-point Maccabi Haifa's victory against the tenth-ranked Galil Gilboa (12-15) 84-82 in the Israeli Winner League in Sunday night's game. Vargas had a double-double by scoring 16 points and making 11 passes. He also added and 4 steals in 37 minutes on the court. Maccabi Hunter Haifa (14-13) is placed sixth in the Winner League. It's Vargas' first season with the team. Vargas has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.2ppg, 5.0rpg, 6.7apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 53.0%, 3FGP: 33.9% and FT: 72.1% in 15 games he played so far. Ex-Protectores de Miranda BBC player is currently a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #2. Second place goes to an experienced former international small forward Donta Smith (201-83, college: SE Illinois JC, currently plays in Puerto Rico). Smith led Piratas to a victory against the seventh-ranked Atleticos (2-3) 89-82 in the Puerto Rican BSN last Saturday. He scored 12 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished 8 assists. Piratas de Quebradillas (4-0) is placed first in the BSN. So far his team won all four games in the Regular Season. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. Smith's overall stats this year are: 9.5ppg, 7.0rpg, 5.3apg, 1.8spg, 2FGP: 65.0%(13-20), 3FGP: 28.6%. He is a naturalized American. Smith played for the Venezuelan national team in 2015. He used to play for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

Jose Materan

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina). Materan managed to help Weber Bahia Blanca Basket in a victory against the tenth-ranked Echague (8-38) crushing them 88-63 in the Argentinian LigaA on Monday night. He scored only 3 points in 12 minutes. Weber Bahia Blanca Basket (25-18) is placed third in Sur group. This year Materan averages just 2.7ppg, 3FGP: 33.3% in three games. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

Forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina) contributed to a 1-point Libertad Sunchales' victory against the eighth-ranked La Union (21-28) 89-88 in the Argentinian LigaA in Monday night's game. Ruiz scored 7 points and grabbed 8 rebounds. Libertad Sunchales (23-23) is placed seventh in Norte group. Ruiz's overall stats this season are: 5.4ppg, 7.3rpg and 1.1spg. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

Freddy Toro

   #5. Former U18 international forward Freddy Toro (201-88, currently plays in Puerto Rico). Toro could not help Capitanes (2-2) to beat Piratas (4-0). He cannot count it as his best performance. Toro scored only 2 points in 1 minutes on the court. It was his first game for Capitanes this season. Capitanes was badly defeated 111-94 on the road by the leading Piratas. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. Toro used to play for the Venezuelan U18 national team twelve years ago.

   #6. Forward Luis Valera (202-88, agency: Duran International, college: UTRGV, currently plays in Spain) contributed to an easy victory against the seventh-ranked Villarrobledo (15-12) 85-69 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) last Saturday. He scored 11 points. Isover Basket Azuqueca (18-9) is placed fifth in Group B. There are only three games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Valera has relatively good stats this season: 12.0ppg and 6.6rpg. He is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team two years ago.

The list of other players, who all have Venezuelan passport but never been selected to any of Venezuelan national teams:

   #1. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) was the major contributor in an Osorno Basquetbol's victory against the third-ranked Espanol de Talca (17-13) 84-67 in the Chilean Liga Nacional last Saturday. Fontena recorded 13 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 27 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Conferencia Sur. Osorno Basquetbol (22-10) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. Fontena has relatively good stats this year: 11.2ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.4apg in 50 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #2. Raul Orta (196-G-85, currently plays in Puerto Rico) managed to help Santeros de Aguada to win against the seventh-ranked Atleticos (2-3) 77-70 in the Puerto Rican BSN on Monday night. Orta scored only 2 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Santeros de Aguada (4-1) is placed second in the BSN. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Orta's overall stats this year are: 0.4ppg and 1.2rpg. He is another player who holds two passports: Venezuelan and Puerto Rican.

   #3. Vladimir Lamberg (202-89, currently plays in Chile) faced previously mentioned Juan Fontena in the Chilean Liga Nacional last game. Lamberg. He could not help Espanol de Talca (17-13) to beat Osorno Basquetbol (22-10). Lamberg recorded only 4 points in 5 minutes on the court. The third-placed Espanol de Talca (17-13) was badly defeated 84-67 on the road by the leading Osorno Basquetbol in the Conferencia Centro. This year Lamberg's overall stats are: 2.0ppg and 1.5rpg in 23 games.

   #4. Rafael Melgarejo (184-G-91, currently plays in Spain) contributed to a 3-point AEC Collblanc's victory against the 14th-ranked Santfeliuenc (7-17) 86-83 in the Spanish EBA (fourth division) in Saturday night's game. He scored only 2 points. Aracena - AEC Collblanc La Torrassa (12-11) is placed seventh in Group C-A. Melgarejo's team will play only one more game in the Regular Season. And that game will be critical. This season Melgarejo averages just 4.3ppg.   

Demir IBB lands Diamon Simpson, ex Trotamundos - 3 days ago
Demir Insaat Buyukcekmece Basket (BSL) landed 30-year old American forward Diamon Simpson (204-104kg-87, college: St.Mary's, CA). He played most recently at Trotamundos in Venezuelan LPB league. Simpson managed to play in four leagues in three countries last year (!!!). In 8 LPB games he averaged 6.1ppg, 6.6rpg and 1.0apg. He also played that season for Maccabi Fox Tel-Aviv in Israeli league where in 6 Euroleague games he had 9.2ppg, 6.7rpg, 1.2apg, 1.5spg and 1.0bpg. The other team Simps...   [read more]

Poitiers add Tarrant to their roster, ex Gigantes - 6 days ago
Union Poitiers Basket 86 (ProB) added to their roster 24-year old American guard Ricky Tarrant (188-86kg-93, college: Memphis). He played last season at Gigantes in Venezuelan LPB league. In 23 games he recorded very impressive stats: 18.3ppg, 3.1rpg and 3.3apg. A very spectacular season in his career as he was voted to All-Venezuelan LPB Honorable Mention. Tarrant also played that season for Titans in Canadian NBL Canada where in 15 games he averaged remarkable 18.7ppg, 4.3rpg   [read more]
