Carrera
Cairns Taipans (NBL) agreed terms with 24-year old Venezuelan international small forward Michael Carrera (196-97kg-93, college: S.Carolina). He is a dual citizen owning also American passport. Carrera played last season at Marinos in Venezuelan LPB league. He managed to play in three leagues in two countries last year. In 32 LPB games he had 14.7ppg, 5.8rpg, 2.2apg, 1.0spg and 1.2bpg. Carrera helped them to make it to the final after they ended regular season as second best team. Quite impressive season as he was voted Latinbasket.com All-Venezuelan LPB Rookie of the Year. He also played that season for Avtodor in Russian league where in 17 VTB United League games he recorded 7.1ppg, 4.6rpg and 1.1apg. Carrera also played 16 games in Basketball Champions League where he averaged 4.3ppg and 3.8rpg.
Carrera has tried to make it to the NBA and played in the NBA Pro Summer League in 2016.
He was also a member of Venezuelan international program for some years. Carrera played for Venezuelan Senior National Team between 2012 and 2015 and previously for U16 National Team back in 2009.
He also represented Venezuela at the South American U15 Championships in Guanare (Venezuela) nine years ago.
Carrera graduated from University of South Carolina in 2016 and it will be his second season as a professional player.
On Carrera: A solid forward player, he seems undersized to play the 3 position, but makes the job done thaks to hustle, timing and a 7-1 wingspan. His effeciveness at grabbing rebounds and shot blocking can be compared to the one of a 6-8 or 6-9 player. Plus, he know how to score both inside and out.
