David Cubillan selected the top Venezuelan playing abroad in last week's games - Nov 12, 2017

We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level.

   #1. This week's number one is an international point guard David Cubillan (181-87, agency: Pro Sports, college: Marquette, currently plays in Liga SudAmericana). He was the major contributor in Flamengo's victory against the ninth-ranked Estudiantes Concordia (2-1) 89-75 in the Liga Sudamericana in Thursday night's game. Cubillan scored 17 points in only a mere 14 minutes on the court. Clube de Regatas do Flamengo (1-2) is placed 12th in group E. The Second Stage already ended in the Liga Sudamericana. Cubillan has relatively good stats this year: 10.3ppg, 2.2rpg, 3.2apg, 2FGP: 52.6%, 3FGP: 37.5% and FT: 85.7% in six games he played so far. He played for the Venezuelan senior national team one years ago.

   #2. Second place goes to an international swingman Jose Materan (196-96, currently plays in Argentina). Materan could not help Weber Bahia (4-4) to beat San Lorenzo (8-0). He scored 8 points, grabbed 5 rebounds and dished 4 assists. The second-placed Weber Bahia (4-4) was badly defeated 88-69 on the road by the leading San Lorenzo in the Group D. It's Materan's first season with the team. This year Materan averages: 4.9ppg, 1.8rpg, 3FGP: 31.6%. He played for the Venezuelan national team in 2016.

   #3. The Venezuelan player who performed third best last week abroad was an international forward Miguel Ruiz (197-90, also represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Argentina). Ruiz led Libertad Sunchales to a 1-point victory against the leader BHY Tiro Federal (4-3) 77-76 in the Argentinian TNA (second division) on Saturday night. He had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting 19 rebounds. Ruiz also added 2 blocks in 39 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Center North. Libertad Sunchales (3-1) is placed second. But this is still an early stage of the season and everything may happen. This year Ruiz's overall stats are: 8.0ppg, 12.0rpg, 1.3apg, 2.5spg and FT: 58.8% in four games. He is also a member of the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #4. An experienced guard John Cox (194-81, agency: Pensack Sports, college: USF, currently plays in Germany) contributed to a BBC Bayreuth's victory against the 16th-ranked Eisbaeren Bremerhaven (1-8) 103-99 in the German BBL in Sunday night's game. Cox scored 6 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. medi Bayreuth (7-2) is placed third in the BBL. It was his team's third consecutive victory in a row. But the season just started, so everything may happen. Cox's total stats this year are: 7.0ppg and 1.6rpg. He is a naturalized American. Cox is also Venezuelan national team player. He used to play for Marinos de Anzoategui in Venezuelan league.

   #5. International point guard Gregory Vargas (180-86, another player represented by Pro Sports, currently plays in Spain) managed to help Montakit Fuenlabrada in a 2-point victory against the 11th-ranked Movil Estudiantes (3-4) 71-69 in a derby game in the Spanish Liga Endesa last Sunday. Vargas scored 5 points, grabbed 6 rebounds and dished 4 assists in 27 minutes. Montakit Fuenlabrada (6-2) is placed fourth in the Liga Endesa. But the season is still in it's first stage and everything can happen. This year Vargas' total stats are: 4.6ppg, 3.1rpg and 2.9apg in eight games. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

   #6. Forward Michael Carrera (196-93, college: S.Carolina, currently plays in Australia) was not able to help Cairns Taipans (4-5) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Carrera's very good performance Cairns Taipans were edged 73-70 in Auckland by the leading New Zealand Breakers. He was the top scorer with 16 points. Carrera also added 6 rebounds and dished 3 assists. But there are still lots of games to play and it's a long way to go. This season Carrera has relatively solid stats: 14.2ppg and 3.8rpg. He is a naturalized American. Carrera is a former international player as he played for the Venezuelan senior team two years ago. Strangely he has never played in Venezuela.

International center Luis Carrillo (206-93, currently plays in Chile) led Universidad de Concepcion to a victory against the fifth-ranked CD Tinguiririca San Fernando (5-9) 84-79 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Saturday night's game. Carrillo had a double-double by scoring 12 points and getting the same number of rebounds. He also added 6 blocks in 38 minutes. CD Universidad de Concepcion (8-6) is placed second in Conferencia Centro. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Carrillo has averaged so far 6.7ppg, 10.0rpg, 1.1apg and 1.5bpg in 12 games. He is also Venezuelan national team player.

   #8. Point guard Harold Cazorla (175-91, agency: Duran International, currently plays in Spain) was not able to secure a victory for Fontedoso Carrefour (4-4) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Cazorla's very good performance Fontedoso Carrefour was edged 80-77 in Leon by the lower-ranked Agustinos-Leclerc (#11). He was the top scorer with 23 points. Cazorla also added 6 assists. Cazorla has reliable stats this season: 11.3ppg, 3.9rpg, 4.5apg and 2.3spg. He plays currently for the Venezuelan national team.

Former international power forward Luis Julio (201-80, currently plays in Chile) helped Las Animas win their game against the third-ranked AB Ancud (10-4) 78-71 in the Chilean Liga Nacional on Wednesday night. Julio had a double-double by scoring 14 points and getting 16 rebounds in 37 minutes. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Conferencia Sur. Club Deportes Las Animas (13-1) is placed first in Conferencia Sur. It was his team's eighth consecutive victory in a row. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game is very crucial. Julio has individually a very good year with high stats. He averages: 15.3ppg, 11.8rpg, 1.7apg and 1.4spg in 13 games. Julio used to play for the Venezuelan national team eight years ago.

Forward Derwin Ramirez (191-82, currently plays in Chile) led CD Tinguiririca San Fernando to a 1-point victory over the leader Los Leones (8-5) 85-84 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Sunday night's game. He was MVP of the game. Ramirez scored 20 points, grabbed 4 boards, passed 8 assists and added 4 steals in 35 minutes. CD Tinguiririca San Fernando (5-9) is placed fifth in Conferencia Centro. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be important. Ramirez has very impressive stats this year: 15.3ppg, 6.5rpg, 3.3apg and 1.2spg in 12 games. He is a former international player as four years ago he still played for the Venezuelan senior national team.

   #11. International forward Juan Coronado (203-90, college: Liberty, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Puente Alto (10-4) in their last game on Wednesday. Despite Coronado's very good performance Puente Alto (#2) was crushed 105-83 in Santiago by the lower-ranked Universidad Catolica (#6) in the Conferencia Centro. He was the top scorer with 18 points. Coronado also added 9 rebounds and dished 5 assists. This season Coronado has very high stats. He averages: 15.5ppg, 8.3rpg and 2.3apg. Coronado used to play for the Venezuelan national team last year.

   #12. Former international swingman Francisco Centeno (201-85, currently plays in Argentina) helped Deportivo Viedma win their game against the third-ranked Estudiantes Olavarria 79-74 in the Argentinian TNA (second division) on Friday night. He scored 8 points and grabbed 6 rebounds in 18 minutes. Centeno averaged so far 14.0ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.6spg in seven games. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team back in 2012.

   #13. Former international guard Jhornan Zamora (196-89, currently plays in Chile) couldn't help Puerto Montt (3-10) in their last game on Saturday. Despite Zamora's good performance Puerto Montt (#6) was edged 76-74 at home by the higher-ranked AB Ancud (#3) in the Conferencia Sur. He recorded 11 points. Zamora's stats this season are: 14.0ppg, 7.1rpg and 1.6spg. He used to play for the Venezuelan national team two years ago.

Vladimir Lamberg (202-89, currently plays in Chile) led Universidad de Concepcion to an easy victory against the third-ranked Espanol de Talca (8-6) crushing them 95-54 in the Chilean Liga Nacional in Sunday night's game. He scored 11 points and grabbed 6 rebounds. It was the game of the round between two top 3 ranked teams in group Conferencia Centro. CD Universidad de Concepcion (8-6) is placed second in Conferencia Centro. There are only four games left until the end of the Regular Season. So now every game will be critical. Lamberg has averaged so far 2.3ppg and 1.9rpg.

   #2. Juan Fontena (196-F-87, currently plays in Chile) could not help Osorno Basquetbol (3-10) in their last game. Despite his good performance Osorno Basquetbol (#5) was edged 96-94 on the road by the leading Las Animas in the Conferencia Sur. Fontena scored 13 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in 38 minutes. It was Osorno Basquetbol's seventh consecutive loss in a row. Fontena has averaged so far 9.7ppg, 9.4rpg and 1.9apg in 11 games he played so far. He has a dual citizenship: Venezuelan and Chilean.

   #3. Emiro Hernandez (188-PG-94, currently plays in Argentina) led Parque Sur to a victory over the fifth-ranked Ciclista (3-3) 78-68 in the Argentinian TNA (second division) on Wednesday night. Hernandez was MVP of the game. He recorded 13 points and grabbed 4 rebounds. Parque Sur de Concepcion del Uruguay (3-1) is placed third in Center South group. Hernandez has averaged so far 6.0ppg and 2.3rpg.

Donta Smith selected the top Venezuelan playing abroad in last week's games - 5 days ago
We bring you last week's top performances from Venezuelans who are playing abroad and who all have had prior experience of national team duties at youth or senior level. This week's number one is an experienced former international small forward Donta Smith (201-83). He could not help New Basket BR (4-11) in their last game. Despite Smith's very good performance New Basket BR was edged 88-86 at home by the much higher-ranked (#7) MIA-RO Cantu.    [read more]

Edwin Mijares (ex Metropolitanos) agreed terms with AB Ancud - 14 days ago
Asociacion Basquetbol Ancud (Liga Nacional) strengthened their roster with addition of 24-year old Venezuelan international guard Edwin Mijares (186-94). He played recently at Metropolitanos in Venezuelan LNB II. Among other achievements Mijares' team made it to the LNB Semifinals for two years in a row (2016 and 2017).
