Vice President of the Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Association, Jerry “Energy” Williams, has offered congratulations to the national champions, the Big Banana Express, who captured the top flight in the Digicel/Coca Cola/ Royal Bank of Canada National Basketball League last Saturday. According to Williams, Express, who came from 2-1 down to capture the five-game series by a 3-2 margin, is a symbol that the quality of basketball in Antigua is constantly improving. “Based on the youthfulness of the team and persons not expecting a newly promoted team to come out and top I would say the level has improved because I don't think that the other teams played bad but it's that this team stepped up their game a notch and now the other teams will have to do the same. Even looking at the Second Division, you could see that it was of a high standard and that any teams from down there could hold their own in the First Division,” Williams said. “I think that it's good for basketball because when you look at the team it's a very young one and even one of the leading players just finished playing with Pitt Bulls (national team) a couple of years ago, so there you can see the fruits of the national programme,” The former Express player added that the Association's President, Senator Chester Hughes, offered his congratulations to the winners on their championship night. “On the night of the final match the president presented the champions with their trophy and also took the time to offer his congratulations to the winners. St. Kitts will be having their opening on 17 June where Express, as champions, will be representing Antigua,” he said. After levelling the series at 2-2 with a 94-85 victory last Thursday, Express came back on Saturday night to take the series with an 84-74 victory over the favoured Warriors team. Speaking to the SUN about his team's triumph in an earlier edition of the SUN, head coach of the Express team, Bobby Joseph, said that it a pretty good feeling emerging victorious - especially since they were the “underdogs” of the entire competition. “I feel pretty good because it's a lot of youngsters we have now who are between 19 and 23 years. We were the underdogs in this playoffs - I didn't even know that there was to be a tournament in St. Kitts this Sunday - it's only when we won on Saturday that the president came and told us that we have to go to St. Kitts on Sunday and other teams already knew about it because they didn't expect Express to win the playoff,” Joseph said. “The guys came out to practise regular - they were focussed and gave me their attention and they worked very hard on defence. The guys feel really good about the championship because for many of them it's the first time they are winning anything - for most of them it's the first time the playing in the First Division,” he added. Charles: Express played well
by Eurobasket News - Jun 7, 2007
When he last spoke with the Antigua Sun, national and ABDF Warriors guard, Marlon Charles (-G-76) was confident that his team had the Antigua & Barbuda Basketball Play-off finals all wrapped up. As a matter of a fact, he had predicted that Warriors would have taken the five-game series over the Big Banana Express team by a 3-1 margin - but that was a week ago.
Now, Charles is giving much credit to the young Grays Green squad stating that they played extremely well to come from 2-1 down to take the series 3-2 against his more experienced squad. In a more recent talk with the SUN, Charles said that his team diverted from their original game plan a bit but was taking nothing away from the Express squad whom he said played like they wanted it more than his Warriors team. “I believe that we shifted away from our game plan but I must give credit to the Big Banana Express team - they really played hard and they wanted it more than us. We made a lot of mistakes and they forced the ball in the weak hand which caused turnovers and I must say that their coach, Bobby Joseph, had a plan and were well prepared,” Charles said. “I must also say that I we did underestimate Express because when I looked at their line-up compared to ours but they came and played their game - they are a much younger team than we are so they overpowered us in the end. I wish them all the best but we will be back next year to take that title,” he added. The dynamic player went on to also give kudos to his own team for working hard to get into the finals but, in the same breath, voiced his disappointment in them not being able to complete the job. “I still must also say big respect to my team for the hard work even though we did not win the Play-offs - we did manage to win the league. I am a bit disappointed in my entire team, including myself, because winning would have capped off a good season for us and this defeat will definitely put us in the line of fire next season,” he told the SUN. After levelling the series at 2-2 with a 94-85 victory on Thursday, Express came back on Saturday night to take the series with an 84-74 victory over the favoured Warriors team.
