 | Bad Boys seeks final playoff spot this Sunday | |
|
| | | At the beginning of the BVI Basketball Federation 2008 Summer League in May, last year's senior division finalist Bad Boys never envisioned having to cling for a spot in the playoffs which start in a week's time.
Bad Boys will be looking to lift themselves from the hole they now find themselves in when they meet defending champs, East, this Sunday in a must win situation at the Multipurpose Sports Complex.
If they lose, Bad Boys will go head-to-head with Latinos in a tie-breaker game on Wednesday evening. Currently, both Bad Boys and Latinos each have one win, but Latinos hold bragging rights after defeating the 2007 finalist earlier this season.
Sunday's action starts at 6 p.m. with Run It Red facing Against the Odds. |

 | Jnr. National basketball squad steps up preparation for CBC tourney | |
|
| | | Under the watchful eyes of former national player, Paul Ice Jones, the Virgin Islands Jnr. National basketball squad entered their final three weeks of practice sessions ahead of the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) tournament which has been shifted from the Dominica Republic to Antigua , and will start on August 17. The tournament will feature players 16 years and under.
To come back home is excellent, I have been thinking about it for a while, I have been coming over and seeing how Bash (Brian Brewley) working and I know it hard. When you working to support your family and still trying to take care of everybody family, it hard. But, Bash makes the sacrifice and I make the sacrifice, Jones stated following a two-hour session on the basketball court in Lower Estate.
Jones who is now based in St. Croix has been working with several of the islands junior players and said he was honoured to return to help develop the sport.
Its real wonderful to see the inspiration in these players, we have a little improvement to work on, especially the short jump shot, but the guys are very determined and with that anything can happen, Jones added.
Jones was assisted by senior players, Kennedy Bass and Jason Edwin among others as the team went through their workout that included left and right hand rotation lay-ups, defensive sets against a shooting team, and full court presses.
When we go over there we will not be teaching and looking to correct. A number of the senior players have come out to support the team and to ensure that we put in a good performance. We have had Bass, Edwin and sometimes Steve Parillon come out and assist with getting the team prepared, said head coach, Brian Bash Brewley.
We had selected 15 players and right now we are down to 13 players, basically, we are still in between minds and we have not finalised the team, Brewley stated.
He added that the team definitely needs to work on the free-throws and cutting down on turnovers. We had three scrimmage games against the St. Thomas National team, but they really beat us because of turnovers, Brewley further stated.
He said that the last time the VI Jr. National team won a regional tournament was in 1999 and the VI last fielded a junior squad to a tournament in 2001.
Meanwhile, Jones appealed to parents and other adults in the community to support youth in sport by getting involved.
Being in St. Croix and working with 7-9, 10-12 and 13-15 and what was my inspiration, is to see how the youth them dying so young. We dont live in a bubble. If we go to the mall is the same youths, you go to the school is the same youths. Everybody fearful of the youth, but somebody has to go out. The youth them aint see no adult involvement so them get angry, Jones stated. Written by Gordon French

 | Rocks Hit Jackpot with Big Man Chino | |
|
|
| | | The SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks have added their first new face to the 2008/09 squad in the name of high-flying forward Randy George (200-F-81, college: Henderson St.). The 6-7 (200 cm) native of the British Virgin Islands goes by the nickname Chino.
George spent last season in a Sheffield Sharks uniform where he averaged 7 points and 5.3 rebounds while playing an average of 17 minutes per game. Rocks player/coach Sterling Davis feels he landed a hidden gem in George.
Randy is a guy who Ive been impressed with from the first time I saw him. He has a raw talent for the game and great athleticism and agility for his size. I think he has so much more to show that maybe didnt come out last year.
Many saw that raw talent on display as he excited a hungry crowd during the BBLs 2008 Molten Slam Dunk Contest at the Playoff Finals Weekend in Birmingham. The Rocks resident Duke of Dunk, Gareth Murray, also participated in the contest however, George may soon be crowned King. Murray was eliminated in the preliminary rounds of the contest while George advanced to the final and finished in 2nd place.
Aside from the excitement of Georges talent, Davis says the islander has the right attitude as well.
Ive also done my research on Randy to know that well be getting a great guy who is hard-working and wants to do anything to help his team to win, said Davis. We are all looking forward to his arrival in the city and I in particular look forward to working and playing alongside him.
George will arrive in Glasgow around 1 September to begin preparations for the Rocks first season at Kelvin Hall. |

 | New basketball foundation launched... Parillon/George reports on the success of hoops summer camp | |
|
| | | BVI HOOP IT UP is proud to announce the launching of its newly formed basketball foundation, built to reach the youths of the British Virgin Islands.
Basketball will be our main tool of emphasis in achieving these much needed goals, we want to keep the youths drug free, off the streets, and make sure academics is priority, and in doing this we will have basketball youth rallies, basketball camps, after-school programs, and basketball tournaments.
We also will be dedicated in making sure the dedicated basketball athletes pursue their ultimate goals in basketball which is playing college basketball then playing pro basketball. The BVI is in dying need of more foundations like this that would bring our youths together and make them better people. We know basketball is one of the high interest sports in the BVI so this will definitely be a successful procedure at hand.

BVI HOOP IT UP FOUNDATION is also proud to announce the completion of Summer Hoops Basketball Camp; this camp was our first camp of the summer and it was a great success to the young and upcoming players that attended.
They learned the fundamentals of basketball, the key being the triple threat which gave them the treat to shoot, pass or dribble.
Coach Parillon noted that 'the triple threat is a huge missing piece from the development of the youths of the BVI, and that more basketball camps should be conducted so the fundamentals can be taught right'.
The camp had an attendance of 40 kids. They were not disappointed as coach Parillon and coach George shared their basketball knowledge and experience from abroad with them. Coach pariilon said: 'I feel good about this first camp and the launching of the BVI HOOP IT UP FOUNDATION, from traveling the world playing basketball I realize the commitment for basketball with the youths is rare here in the BVI compared to other countries. This camp which is the first of two camps we will be conducting this summer made me proud, because I met some wonderful children that was motivated to learn, listen and have fun doing that. I wish more kids from ages 12 to 18 would have attended the camp but I know there were a lot of summer jobs out there and they felt like the need for a little cash in their pockets, so that's why we are having another camp at the Multi-Purpose Complex from August 11th - 15th from 9am - 3 pm and I hope more kids would come out and grasp this valuable learning experience.'
Summer Hoops basketball camp would like to thank Ishmael Scatliffe and the workers at the complex for letting us use the facilities. They also would like to thank the parents for putting their trust in us to share our knowledge to your kids. | Young Legs settle score with the Guns, 69-66 | |
|
| | | The decibel meter at the Multipurpose Sports Complex was tested late Saturday night when Young Legs' fans raised it to ear splitting levels, after ex-player Steve Parillon missed three crucial free throws that would have tied the game with 4.9 seconds left, preserving their team's spine tingling, 69-66, victory over rivals Guns.
The win avenged an overtime loss by the same score in their earlier matchup. In foul trouble before the half, Parillon returned to the game with four minutes and 34 seconds left then tried to make his biggest shots of the league against his old squad with whom he has been a 3-peat champion before exiting for the Guns before the season opener.
His missed free throws ended the Guns' 7-3 run as they were woeful at the line only making 10 of their 17 attempt or 58%, while Young Legs were 74% at 20 of 27 at the line.
Young Legs outscored the Guns, 42-34 in the in the second and third quarters, to take a 52-51 lead to start the fourth stanza, then opened up an eight point lead before the Guns came back to tie the game.
'Congratulations to the Guns, AKA the paper team, they are really good and I have a lot of trouble with them,' Young Legs' coach Brian 'Bash' Brewley said. 'When I made that run early in the fourth quarter, I thought we would have taken them out of the game but they played hard defense and they got right back into it.'
In his first game as Guns' coach since Sports Minister Andrew Fahie resigned a week ago, Derwin Scatliffe said he might have made a few bad subs.
'But, honestly and truly, the referee really took the players out of the game mentally, because the defense they were supposed to be playing they couldn't play because the referees wouldn't give them any calls,' he noted. 'There were players, assistant coaches from the other team who said they don't' like how they won the game, because the referee called against us.'
Jason Edwin and Lyle Duggins were Young Legs' top scorers with 17 points each and Edwin pulled another 10 boards. Kennedy Bass and Trevor 'West' Stevens chipped in 11 and 10 points each, with eight and seven rebounds respectively.
Calvert White led the Guns' scores with 18 points and five assists. Randy 'Chino' George followed up with 16 and Houston Penn narrowly missed a double double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jerrick Maduro was Full Force's top scorer with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Kishawn Pope added 14 with five steals and five rebounds.
