 | Fresh elections loom for NBFTT | |
|
| | | The National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT) will attempt to bring an end to the rift within the organisation with fresh elections in the near future.
Following a meeting with the NBFTT on Monday, T&T Olympic Committee (T&TOC) president Larry Romany yesterday confirmed that a 'tentative date' had been set for the Federation's special general meeting, when officials will be elected for a two-year term.
The tenure of the Federation's current executive was scheduled to end in March of next year.
Romany, however, did not want to disclose particulars of the agreement between the two differing parties within the Federation, namely current president Earl John and presidential aspirant Brian Manning, son of Prime Minister Patrick Manning, saying that the NBFTT were dealing with the matter internally, while the T&TOC act as mediators.
The T&TOC instructed that John and some other NBFTT officials be re-instated earlier this year after they were ejected from the Federation by a group led by Manning.
The rift has resulted in Government's financial assistance to the NBFTT being cut and, according to John, the Federation have suffered as a result.
'At the moment we cannot fund our programmes,' John told the Express yesterday, 'because no funds are forthcoming.'
In a recent interview, John explained that the constitution required a special request for removal of officers by at least 30 per cent of the Federation's board to initiate election proceedings.
'Nobody within the Federation has so far requested (removal). They have to request removal of directors within the board,' John explained. 'When that is received, then the board will have a special general meeting according to the constitution.'express |

 | Govt witholds basketball $$ | |
|
| | | GOVERNMENT has decided to indefinitely withhold financial assistance to the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT).
Newsday learnt yesterday that Government has called on the beleaguered basketball officials to iron out their differences and work together in the interest of the sport and its development before they are once again eligible for assistance.
This decision was taken on Friday of last week, close to a month since an agreement was reached between two warring factions of the national body.
Recently NBFTT president Earl John and fellow members June Rogers, Vice-President Marketing and Communications;Assistant Secretary Darrel Joseph and Technical Director Obadiah Asher were ejected from the organisation.
At an annual general meeting earlier this year Brian Manning, son of Prime Minister Patrick Manning was elevated to president but this development led to complaints to the Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) who were called in to arbitrate. Last month the TTOC agreed to re-instate John and the other members following an agreement between the warring parties. However Newsday understands that TTOC officials are now demanding that the John-led federation call fresh elections now.
Contacted yesterday John would only confirm Governments decision to withhold their financial help to the federation pending the determination of the outstanding issues.
Another source however told Newsday that members of the federation are complaining that in the agreement brokered by the TTOC between the parties, executive members of the federation can only be removed outside of the constitutional date at a special meeting called by the president.
They are also claiming that the TTOC demand is not appropriate since no new time for elections was agreed to, neither has any member submitted their resignation to warrant a replacement.
According to the source the decision to re-instate John and the other members was taken based solely on the fact that their ouster was deemed unconstitutional. The re-instatement also came because the John-led faction complained that their removal was made by a vote of no-confidence outside of the election year which is due in 2009.
It is understood that the current administration intends to hold elections at the constitutionally due time next year. The TTOC had also recommended in their arbitration agreement that the NBFTT constitution be amended to remove ambiguities and anomalies. Now members of the federation are openly querying why the Olympic Committee, led by Larry Romany, is insisting that elections are held before it is constitutionally due.
They are also are charging that TTOC officials are renegging on aspects of the arbitration agreement.
Efforts yesterday to contact Romany and other members of the Olympic Committee proved futile.newsday

 | Army wins in North Zone league game | |
|
| | | CASSIUS Humphrey scored some crucial free throws late in the final quarter as Defence Force rallied back to march past Sports and Games Caledonia Clippers in a First Division Men's contest of the North Zone Basketball Commission. And this was without their star player Steven 'Lighter' Lewis at the Jean Pierre Complex (JPC) last Friday night.
Guard Humphrey, who came off the bench, sunk five of six attempts from the free-throw line as the rest of the Defence Force team went one for nine in the fourth quarter.
Centres Kevin Bacquin (who missed most of last season because of an injury) and Nigel Joseph dominated the boards, especially the offensive side, to net several second attempts.
He finished the game with useful contributions of 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Marvin Celestine chipped in with ten, while young Jonathan Donawa, who also came off the bench, netted six straight points to give the Army their first lead (36-35) with 50 seconds to half-time.
But Casey Belgrave drained one from long range on the buzzer to hand Clippers a two-point cushion at the break.
In the penultimate session, Defence Force tightened their defence, and forced their opponents into a series of turnovers and poor shots to hold a five-point lead at the start of the final period.
The army/sailor unit's lead blossomed into their biggest of the game-nine points after four minutes of the restart.
Led by Brandon Dennis, who registered a game-high 27 points, Clippers managed to trim the surplus down to four (71-67) with two minutes and 44 seconds remaining on the clock, before Humphrey held his nerve at the line to see his side safely home by seven points.
Kerwin (18) and Christopher Lares (ten) also made useful contributions for Clippers, who have now lost six times from eight meetings with the soldiers since 2006, including a 2-1 defeat in the Big Four final the same year.
Four-time champions Defence Force, who ended the last season empty-handed, played without Lewis because of a five-game ban.
The shooting guard received the ban from the NZBC for violent conduct against a Sportworld Straker Nets player in last season's Big Four semi-final playoffs.
Following Wednesday night's game, Lewis still has a pair of games to sit out.
In the first game of the night, Akil Paynter scored 25 points to lead Macoya Forum to a 69-53 success over Clippers in a Second Division contest.
Brenton Gittens and Aaron Simon added ten each as Forum led by ten (33-23), following the first stanza.
It was Forum's third straight win.
Anton Patrick chipped in with nine in the win. Captain Kerdell Clarke led the losers with 13 points, while Colin Flemony added ten. |

 | Nets win thriller | |
|
| | | FANS were treated to an enthralling double-header as action in the North Zone Basketball Commission continued at the Jean Pierre Complex, Port of Spain on Wednesday night.
In the feature fixture, debutants Mt Hope Spurs put in an impressive showing as they manfully stayed with Sportworld Straker Nets before bowing out to last yearA‚·s second-placed team 76-72 in overtime, following four very competitive quarters.
The scoreline was 72-72 after regulation time.
Hashim Arcia led the scoring with 20 points for Nets, who jumped out to a 6-0 lead to start the opening period. They eventually led by four points (35-31) at the conclusion of the quarter.
Arcia, who netted 16 of his teams points in a victory to start the season the week before, was ably supported by Jeffery Harris (17) and former St Anthonys College player Imo Williams, who pitched in with a dozen.
Harris, who had 15 points in his team's opening win, had to leave the game early in the second period after sustaining a cut over his left eye, while attempting a lay-up.
Wearing a plaster, Harris returned to the floor with five minutes 12 seconds to play in the penultimate session and scored seven of his points to help Nets put away the newcomers down the stretch.
Jason Paul, player of the night without a doubt, took the fight to the winners but his gallant one-man effort of a game-high 26 points was not enough to take his squad over the line ahead of Nets, who were made to fight for their second win on the trot.
Spurs, who had no other player reaching double digits, won the league and knockout titles at the recently-concluded Mt Hope Community Tournament. |

 | St Augustine and ISPS score big in high school awards | |
|
| | |
St Augustine Secondary and International School of Port of Spain (ISPS) were big winners when the NGC/Express Secondary Schools Basketball League held their 2008 prize-giving ceremony yesterday at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
St Augustine picked up the national Champion of Champions Under-20 and Under-17 titles, while Ashton Demurrel and Chris Nelson picked up the respective MVP awards for those divisions.
The 'Green Machine' also won the East Zone accolades for both divisions.
International School also grabbed a large haul at the awards function. They took the Girls Open and Boys Under-15 categories, with Matthew Temple and Kristen Temple taking the MVP awards for those divisions in that order.
ISPS were third among the Under-20 boys, runners-up at Under-17 level, in addition to finishing the best team among the Under-15 and Girls Open categories in the North Zone.
QRC, led by some strong performances by Shemuel Bartholomew in the North Zone Under-20 division, copped that category easily, and were second best among Under-15 boys, and third best among the Under-17s.
Barrackpore Senior Comprehensive came in for great plaudits after their girls topped the open category in their first year of competition, while Mason Hall were the dominant force in Tobago .
SSBL president, Ishmael St Bryce, was pleased that there were 'minimal incidents of injury or disruptions' in the 2008 staging of the League. But he also lamented the many challenges schools basketball continued to face.
Representatives of the Ministry of Sport and Youth Affairs did not show up to address the gathering, but Wynda Chandler, community relations officer of main sponsors NGC, made up for it with a lively session, as she interacted with the young players, inquiring how they saw themselves benefiting from the SSBL.
Several of the hard-working members of the league were also honoured for their continued service to the game, including long-standing official/coach Anthony Lewis, and Stephen Leonce, currently the coach of Success/Laventille.

 | John back at basketball helm | |
|
| | | Earl John, reinstated president of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT), will chair his first meeting this morning at the Maloney Indoor Sports Arena in Maloney.
John was put back as the sport's top man following a decision taken by the two-man mediation team of Kerston Coombs, a Trinidad and Tobago Olympic Committee (TTOC) trustee, and attorney J Tyrone Marcus at the TTOC office in Port of Spain on Wednesday.
The mediation team was put in place to look into John's alleged unconstitutional removal as president at an NBFTT annual general meeting on March 29 at Maloney.
At the AGM, John was 'replaced' by Brian Manning, son of Prime Minister Patrick Manning, as the new boss of the federation through a vote of no confidence.
According to John, the move was contrary to Article 17 of the constitution of the NBFTT (Removal from Office and Filling Vacancies) and, in addition, it was not an election year.
The election of officers to fill positions on the NBFTT's executive or board of directors is held every two years and John and his team were voted in last year.
Following discussions at the TTOC office, the mediators concluded that the AGM held on March 29, and which reconvened on April 5, should be deemed 'unconstitutional, null and void and of no effect, hence the directors removed must be reinstated with immediate effect'.
The other officers affected at the March annual general meeting were vice-president of communications and marketing, June Rogers, who was replaced by Nadine Khan, and assistant secretary Darren Joseph, who handed over his duties to Denisha Harris.
The TTOC also recommended that the NBFTT constitution be revised to remove ambiguities and that a dispute resolution tribunal be appointed, in accordance with the requirements of the constitution.
The mediation process got underway following correspondence sent to the TTOC on April 11, in the wake of what transpired at the Federation's AGM.
John and Manning were present at the mediation sessions in May and earlier this month and after reviewing all the evidence, the mediators decided that John and the other members who were wrongly removed be reinstated.Â
On Thursday, John said that today's meeting was always on the Federation's schedule. He added that he did not know what the agenda would look like, but stated that the NBFTT executive will be seriously looking into the recommendations made by the mediators.
And Manning (B), who resigned from the National Professional Basketball League (NPBL) in April, is now no longer an associate member of the NBFTT.
Manning was an associate member of the Federation at the time when he was unlawfully elected as president.
Several attempts to contact Manning went unanswered.
On Wednesday, a T&T Olympic Committee official told the Express that the findings of the mediation team would be announced on June 18, but in a media release on Thursday, the TTOC suggested that the confidentiality agreement between the two parties had been broken and the public disclosure in Thursday's media could damage efforts at remedying the situation.
'As far as the TTOC is concerned, the mediation/arbitration process involving Messrs Earl John and Brian Manning of the National Basketball Federation of Trinidad and Tobago (NBFTT)is ongoing,' the statement said. 'Accordingly, the confidentiality agreement that formed the basis of the mediation/arbitration effort by the TTOC, to which all parties subscribed, remains in place.'
It further added that the TTOC mediation panel have made certain recommendations, 'however, the recommendations have no binding effect unless both parties agree and communicate such to the TTOC office by June 18.
'Any communication at this time by the disputants are therefore premature and can be prejudicial to the efforts of the TTOC. Further, the TTOC wishes to clarify that the recommendations must be accepted in their entirety.
'The TTOC remains confident that this matter will be concluded on June 18.'

But the Bears adjusted their pace pretty quickly and struck back narrowing the gap to only 2 points at the interval 40:42. Jakobsen helped his team to reach 40:31 in the end of the period, but the things became hotter just before the buzzer. Rabbits fought back for 42:41 as the teams went to the lockers. Again Bakken Bears started better and had 64:51 throughout the third period. With 4-10 run the visitors closed to 68:61. Jens Jensen made it 72:71 to bring the intrigue into the game. Gary McIntyre collected 2 points and 1 rebound. The Bakken Bears claimed their second straight Basketligaen title after overcoming Svendborg in the Finals. The Bears completed a 4-0 sweep and proved their status as the best Danish team at the moment. |
