Davis appointed women's basketball coach- April 13, 2015Senior national basketball player, Mahijah Davis (195-G-77, college: Cent.Oklahoma), has been appointed head coach of the women's national team ahead of the country's participation in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) Women's Championships from June 8-12 in Tortola, BVI. Davis was appointed on Thursday night by the Basketball Association to lead the country's charge. The coach said his aim is to build a firm foundation going into the highly anticipated championships. 'I will be looking for fundamentals, numbers and sets; playing spats on the court instead of just running up wild and crazy out of an organised system,' he said. Davis believes he is the right man for the job and is looking forward to the challenge. 'I was only watching with the previous guys that were there doing the condition and everything so I think ABBA needed someone who actually knows to come out and take the programme to another level. I see a lot of girls out there and some of the older folks came out and some of the young ones also and I think that's a good combination in terms of blending the old with the young and try to do big things,' the coach said. Meanwhile, coordinator of female basketball and one member of the senior women's team, Kebra Nanton (82), lamented the team's late start in preparation which she said, could not have been avoided. 'This 2015 CBC for the females was definitely not planned. We decided a month and a half ago that we were going to participate so that was (Trinidad dropping out of the competition) one of the reasons why it was not planned and why we are behind and we have to put in the work because we only have two and a half months left to be prepared so,' she said. The Antigua & Barbuda team is slated to travel to Tortola the first week in June. Antigua & Barbuda is grouped with Bahamas, St Vincent & the Grenadines and the U.S. Virgin Islands. |
