The Regular Season in La Liga is slowly approaching the end. But there may be still some important changes in the final standings in the last 5 rounds. The round was exceptionally exciting as four games ended with a tiny margin. The round was rather attractive and full of interesting results. The round ended with favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The game between third ranked Instituto (20-10) and eleventh ranked San Martin Corrientes (17-16) was the most important one in the last round on Sunday night. Instituto was crushed by San Martin Corrientes on the road 100-78. San Martin Corrientes outrebounded Instituto 46-29 including 31 on the defensive glass. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists. American power forward Lee Roberts (201-87, college: Findlay, OH) fired a double-double by scoring 23 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. Panamanian forward Michael Hicks (196-76, college: Texas A&M-CC) chipped in 16 points and 5 rebounds. San Martin Corrientes' coach Sebastian Gonzalez felt very confident that he used 11 players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. The former international guard Santiago Scala (186-91) produced 19 points for lost side. San Martin Corrientes have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to tenth place. Instituto at the other side keeps the third position with ten games lost. San Martin Corrientes are looking forward to face league's second-placed Ferro in Buenos Aires in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Instituto will play at home against Estudiantes C. and is hoping to win this game.
Leader San Lorenzo delivered the twenty sixth victory. This time they crushed 15th ranked Hispano Am. (11-20) 91-72 in Almagra. Worth to mention a great performance of Uruguayan power forward Mathias Calfani (204-92, agency: Pro Sports) who helped to win the game recording 17 points. Nicolas Aguirre contributed with 12 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for the winners. San Lorenzo's coach Gonzalo Garcia allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. American power forward Devon Scott (206-94, college: Philander Smith) answered with 12 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists for Hispano Am.San Lorenzo (26-4) have an impressive series of five victories in a row. Defending champion maintains first place. Hispano Am. lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the fifteenth position with 20 games lost. San Lorenzo will play against bottom-ranked Atenas (#20) in Cordoba in the next round which should be an easy win for them. Hispano Am. will play at home against Argentino (#17) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very close game took place in Concordia between Olimpico de La Banda and Estudiantes C.. Twelfth ranked Olimpico de La Banda (15-19) got a very close victory on the road over higher ranked Estudiantes C. (17-14). Olimpico de La Banda managed to escape with a 1-point win 84-83 on Wednesday evening. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Estudiantes C.. It was a great evening for Luis Santos who led his team to a victory with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 12 rebounds. At the losing side Daviyon Draper responded with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 10 rebounds. Despite that victory Olimpico de La Banda went down to thirteenth position due to points difference. Loser Estudiantes C. dropped to the eighth place with 14 games lost. Olimpico de La Banda will meet higher ranked Comunicaciones (#7) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Estudiantes C. will play against Instituto having rather not much hope for a victory.
A very interesting game took place in Mar del Plata. It ended with only two-point defeat on the road of 4th placed Obras Basket (20-13) to eighteenth ranked Quilmes MP (10-21) 84-82 on Monday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. It was an exceptional evening for Rick Jackson who led the winners and scored 23 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks (on 11-of-14 shooting from the field). Quilmes MP's coach Javier Bianchelli used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Quilmes MP maintains eighteenth place with 10-21 record. Obras Basket at the other side keeps the fourth position with 13 games lost. Quilmes MP will have a break next round. Obras Basket will play at home against San Martin Corrientes (#10) and hope to win that game.
Important game to mention about took place in La Banda. Twelfth ranked Olimpico de La Banda (15-19) saved a 2-point victory at home edging higher ranked Gimnasia (20-14) 95-93 on Sunday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. Gelvis Solano fired 23 points and 6 assists for the winners. Olimpico de La Banda's coach Adrian Capelli used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. Despite that victory Olimpico de La Banda went down to thirteenth position due to points difference. Loser Gimnasia keeps the fifth place with 14 games lost. Olimpico de La Banda will face higher ranked Comunicaciones (#7) in Mercedes in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Gimnasia will play on the road against Boca Juniors in Buenos Aires and hope to win that game.

Other games of round 31 were very predictable and ended without any surprises. Here they are:
bottom-ranked Atenas was defeated by Argentino in Junin 77-75. La Union was smashed by Instituto at home 73-92. Hispano Am. lost to Libertad S. on the opponent's court 72-87. Penarol unfortunately lost to Obras Basket in a home game 78-84. Gimnasia managed to beat Quimsa on the road 80-75. Bahia Basket defeated Atenas on its own court 79-69. Boca Jrs was smashed by Penarol in Mar del Plata 82-63.
The best stats of 31th round was 21 points and 5 rebounds by Jasiel Rivero of Boca Jrs.



Argentino - Atenas 77-75

Everything could happen in Junin at the game between two tied teams. Both nineteenth ranked Argentino and 20th ranked Atenas had identical 10-22 record. This time Argentino used a home court advantage and edged the opponent from Cordoba 77-75 on Monday night. Argentino made 21-of-22 free shots (95.5 percent) during the game. Argentino outrebounded Atenas 40-25 including a 13-1 advantage in offensive rebounds. American center Arkeem Joseph (206-94, college: Texas A&M Int.) fired a double-double by scoring 16 points and 11 rebounds (made all of his eight free throws) for the winners. His fellow American import forward Leron Black (201-96, college: Illinois) chipped in 17 points and 9 rebounds. Four Argentino players scored in double figures. The former international Nicolas Romano (200-87) produced 18 points and point guard Franco Baralle (177-99) added 15 points and 5 rebounds respectively for lost side. Atenas' coach Nicolas Casalanguida rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. The victory was the fourth consecutive win for Argentino. They moved-up to seventeenth place. Loser Atenas stay at the bottom position with 23 games lost. Argentino will face higher ranked Hispano Am. (#15) in Rio Gallegos in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Atenas will play at home against the league's leader San Lorenzo (#1) having rather not much hope for a victory.

The former international swingman Alexis Elsener (196-88, agency: Interperformances) produced 15 points and 7 rebounds and American forward John Flowers (200-89, college: WVU, agency: Octagon Europe) added 16 points and 6 rebounds respectively for lost side.
