Gimnasia - Estudiantes 79-78 Important game to mention about took place in Comodoro Rivadavia. Sixteenth ranked Gimnasia CR (3-9) saved a 1-point victory at home edging higher ranked Estudiantes (7-8) 79-78 on Friday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Estudiantes. Gimnasia CR made 20-of-26 charity shots (76.9 percent) during the game. Gimnasia CR had a 37-25 advantage in offensive rebounds. It was a good game for Cuban center Pedro Bombino (207-0, agency: Pro Sports) who saved his team from a defeat with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Franco Ferraria (191-2) contributed with 19 points and 9 rebounds for the winners. Venezuelan center Enderson Alcala (193-1) answered with a double-double by scoring 21 points and 11 rebounds and Uruguayan forward Nahuel Lemos (205-99) added 20 points and 12 rebounds in the effort for Estudiantes. Five Gimnasia CR and four Estudiantes players scored in double figures. Gimnasia CR maintains sixteenth place with 3-9 record. Estudiantes at the other side keeps the eleventh position with eight games lost. Gimnasia CR will play against higher ranked Penarol (#9) in Mar del Plata in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Estudiantes will play at home against H.Americano and hopes to get back on the winning track. It ended at the same time the six-game winning streak of Libertad. It was an exceptional evening for swingman Elias Iniguez (195-0) who led the winners and scored 23 points and 7 rebounds. Point guard Lautaro Cabrera (172-0) accounted for 12 points, 8 rebounds and 10 assists for the winning side. The former international swingman Julian Eydallin (195-0) came up with 21 points and 7 rebounds and Nicolas Quiroga (191-3) added 21 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Libertad in the defeat. Both teams had four players each who scored in double figures. La Union moved-up to fourteenth place. Libertad at the other side keeps the tenth position with six games lost. La Union's next round opponent will be higher ranked Obras (#6) in Buenos Aires and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Comunicaciones was crushed by Obras in Buenos Aires 81-59. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Comunicaciones. Obras dominated down low during the game scoring 58 of its points in the paint compared to Comunicaciones' 24. They outrebounded Comunicaciones 48-26 including a 30-18 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Franco Smaniotti (187-0) who scored 15 points and 6 rebounds. Uruguayan swingman Ignacio Xavier (196-99) chipped in 11 points and 8 rebounds. Obras' coach felt very confident that he used entire bench which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Julian Aleric (204-99) who recorded 11 points and 8 rebounds and guard Juan Manuel Bejar (186-1) added 10 points and 6 rebounds respectively. Four Comunicaciones players scored in double figures. Obras have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to sixth place. Comunicaciones at the other side keeps the third position with five games lost. Obras are looking forward to face La Union (#14) in Formosa in the next round and are hoping to win another game. (6-7) 87-79 on Saturday. Boca Jrs. shot 31 for 48 from the free-throw line, while Atenas only scored fourteen points from the stripe. Atenas was plagued by 31 personal fouls down the stretch. The best player for the winners was forward Tomas Pereyra (198-0) who had a double-double by scoring 22 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks. Agustin Facello chipped in 23 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. At the other side the best for losing team was forward Octavio Sarmiento (198-1) who recorded 33 points (!!!) and 8 rebounds and guard Alejo Andres (191-0) added 8 points, 6 rebounds and 9 assists respectively. Atenas' coach rotated ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Boca Jrs. moved-up to thirteenth place. Loser Atenas dropped to the fifteenth position with seven games lost. Boca Jrs. will face higher ranked Estudiantes (#11) in Concordia in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Atenas will play on the road against Libertad (#10) in Sunchales and hope to win that game. Seventeenth ranked Olimpico (2-9) got a very close home victory over higher ranked Regatas (8-6). Olimpico managed to escape with a 2-point win 78-76 on Saturday evening. It was quite big embarassment for the guest team. Olimpico forced 19 Regatas turnovers. Strangely Regatas outrebounded Olimpico 50-37 including a 41-28 advantage in defensive rebounds. It was a great evening for guard Luciano Caceres (180-1) who led his team to a victory scoring 31 points. Forward Mateo Codigoni (191-0) helped adding 12 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. Olimpico's coach used a ten-player rotation in such tough game. The best for the losing side was forward Juan-Cruz Scacchi (200-0) with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists and center Joaquin Marcon (203-1) scored 12 points and 7 rebounds. Olimpico maintains seventeenth place with 2-9 record. Loser Regatas dropped to the eighth position with six games lost. Olimpico will meet higher ranked Weber Bahia (#4) in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Regatas will have a break next round. Local H.Americano (1-14) was outscored by eleventh ranked Estudiantes (7-8) 101-39 on Sunday night. Estudiantes dominated down low during the game scoring 72 of its points in the paint compared to H.Americano's 22. Estudiantes forced 24 H.Americano turnovers and outrebounded them 47-28 including a 35-21 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Venezuelan center Enderson Alcala (193-1) who had a double-double by scoring 36 points (!!!), 12 rebounds, 4 assists and 5 blocks. Uruguayan forward Nahuel Lemos (205-99) chipped in a double-double by scoring 20 points and 13 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Four Estudiantes players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was point guard Jose Barrios (178-96) who recorded 25 points and 4 steals and forward Damian Fernandez (194-2) added 5 points and 11 rebounds respectively. H.Americano's coach gave up on the game allowing to play eleven players seeing no chance for a win. Estudiantes maintains eleventh place with 7-8 record. Loser H.Americano stay at the bottom position with 14 games lost. Estudiantes will face Boca Jrs. (#13) in Buenos Aires in the next round. H.Americano will play again on the road against Estudiantes (#11) in Concordia and hope to win that game. San Martin made 23-of-28 free shots (82.1 percent) during the game. San Martin outrebounded Platense 49-35 including a 38-26 advantage in defensive rebounds. The best player for the winners was Franco Mendez (188-2) who had a double-double by scoring 15 points, 16 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals. Center Rafael Dominguez (205-98) chipped in 21 points and 8 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field). Four San Martin players scored in double figures. At the other side the best for losing team was power forward Nestor Lopez (203-0) who recorded a double-double by scoring 10 points and 10 rebounds and guard Brandon Szlaien (192-99, college: Dean) added 16 points respectively. Platense's coach already knew that his team would not have a big chance, so allowed to play twelve players seeing no chance for a win. San Martin have a solid series of three victories in a row. They moved-up to twelfth place. Platense lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the eighteenth position with 12 games lost. San Martin will face Argentino (#18) in Junin in the next round which should be theoretically another easy game. Platense will play on the road against Ferro in Buenos Aires and hope to win that game.
