La Liga Argentina Round 19: Dep Viedma lose to Petrolero

There was no lack of interesting games this round. The round ended with change at the leadership position and favorites losing the games. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

Round 19 most important game was a defeat of league's leader Dep Viedma (12-7). They were defeated by third ranked Petrolero (10-8) 88-82 on Wednesday night. Petrolero forced 24 Dep Viedma turnovers. 27 personal fouls committed by Dep Viedma helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. It was a great evening for forward Matias Barberis (197-84) who led his team to a victory scoring 17 points and 7 rebounds. Guard Lucas Machuca (185-92) helped adding 19 points. Petrolero's coach used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. At the losing side American Kenny Jones (198-84, college: Kentucky St.) responded with a double-double by scoring 19 points and 16 rebounds (on 7-of-9 shooting from the field). Petrolero maintains third place in Liga Argentina with 10-8 record having just three points less than leader Estudiantes O. Dep Viedma at the other side dropped to the second position with seven games lost. They were replaced at the leadership position by Estudiantes O.. Dep Viedma will play next round against Rocamora trying to make it back to the top of the standings. Petrolero will try to continue on its current victory against fourth ranked Villa Mitre in Bahia Blanca.
The game had a very big importance for second-ranked C.Espanol P. as it allowed them to take a leadership position in Liga Argentina. C.Espanol P. defeated leader Dep Viedma in Plottier 88-84. It was a key game for the top position in Liga Argentina. It was an exceptional evening for guard Agustin Perez (192-99) who led the winners and scored 24 points and 9 rebounds. Nicolas Bravo accounted for 18 points and 5 rebounds. Guard Marcelo Martinez (187-96) came up with 16 points for Dep Viedma in the defeat. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Leading Estudiantes O. (13-5) recorded its fifth loss in Bahia Blanca on Friday night. Visitors were rolled over by fifth ranked Villa Mitre (10-8) 107-86. Franco Pennacchiotti fired a double-double by scoring 22 points and 14 rebounds for the winners. Santiago Arese produced 23 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists for lost side. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Villa Mitre moved-up to fourth place in Liga Argentina. Loser Estudiantes O. still keeps top position with five games lost. Villa Mitre will meet league's leader C.Espanol P. in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Estudiantes O. will play against the league's second-placed Dep Viedma in Rio Negro and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Worth to mention a great performance of Ignacio Fernandez who helped to win the game recording 20 points and 5 assists. Echague's coach allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Echague moved-up to fifth place in Liga Argentina. Barrio Parque at the other side dropped to the fourth position with eight games lost. Echague will have a break next round. Barrio Parque will play on the road against Olimpico (#6) in Ceres and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In Liga Argentina Independiente won against Rivadavia on the opponent's court 87-81. Sp.America managed to outperform Union SF in a home game 86-81. Villa S.Martin rolled over Dep Norte on the road 88-60. Ameghino crushed Tiro Federal on its own court 94-63. Echague was beaten by San Isidro in San Francisco 69-56. Union SF won against Barrio Parque at home 81-69. Rocamora unfortunately lost to Villa Mitre on the opponent's court 77-95. Rocamora managed to beat C.Entrerriano in a home game 83-65. Del Progreso was defeated by Racing on the road 82-68. Atenas was beaten by Estudiantes O. on its own court 83-90. Atenas lost to GELP in La Plata 81-85. Ciclista unfortunately lost to Del Progreso at home 59-76. Del Progreso recorded a loss to GELP on the opponent's court 70-77.
The most impressive stats of the last round was 15 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists by Joaquin Rios of GELP.



Group NORTE
Ameghino - Dep Norte 103-83

Very important is a road loss of second ranked Dep Norte (13-6) against fourth ranked Ameghino (10-9) on Wednesday night. Visiting Dep Norte was crushed by Ameghino in Villa Maria 103-83. Ameghino looked well-organized offensively handing out 26 assists. It was a great evening for swingman Matias Martinez (195-94) who led his team to a victory scoring 29 points, 8 rebounds and 6 assists. A very interesting game took place in Parana. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 3rd placed Barrio Parque (9-8) to sixth ranked Echague (9-11) 84-83 on Thursday evening. Echague shot 60.8 percent from the field. They shot the lights out from three nailing 13 long-distance shots on high 59.1 percentage.
