La Liga Argentina Round 22: Union SF edges San Isidro by one point

Twelfth-ranked San Isidro (5-9) made lots of trouble for first ranked Union SF (13-4) in San Francisco on Saturday. The visitors from Santa Fe managed to secure only one-point victory 76-75. However their fans expected much easier game. 26 personal fouls committed by San Isidro helped opponents get some easy free throw opportunities. Naturalized Spanish swingman Maximiliano Martin (190-90) fired 24 points and 8 rebounds for the winners. Guard Erbel De Pietro (185-88) chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds. American center Anthony Johnson (203-88, college: Fairfield) produced a double-double by scoring 14 points and 14 rebounds for lost side. Both coaches used bench players in such tough game. Union SF maintains first position with 13-4 record, which they share with Villa S.Martin. San Isidro at the other side dropped to the tenth place with nine games lost. They share the position with Atenas and CAO Ceres. Union SF is looking forward to face Barrio Parque (#6) in Cordoba in the next round where they are favorite. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Lanus. Worth to mention a great performance of point guard Jose Gutierrez (185-87, agency: BIG) who helped to win the game recording 19 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Leandro Cecchi contributed with 14 points and 7 rebounds for the winners. American forward Leon Gilmore III (201-95, college: SF Austin) replied with a double-double by scoring 20 points and 12 rebounds for Lanus. Villa Mitre have a solid four-game winning streak. They moved-up to third place. Newly promoted Lanus keeps the eighth position with seven games lost. Villa Mitre will play against GELP (#4) in La Plata in the next round. Lanus will play at home against Progreso (#5) and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An exciting game between Top Four teams was played in Rio Negro. First ranked Dep Viedma faced 3rd ranked GELP. Host Dep Viedma (10-3) defeated guests from La Plata (8-4) 78-69. It ended at the same time the three-game winning streak of GELP. Fermin Thygesen scored 18 points, 7 rebounds and 5 assists to lead the charge for the winners. At the losing side Pablo Alderete responded with a double-double by scoring 14 points and 12 rebounds. GELP's coach Mauro Tartaglia rotated eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Dep Viedma maintains first position with 10-3 record. Loser GELP dropped to the fourth place with four games lost. Dep Viedma will meet Rivadavia (#12) on the road in the next round which should be an easy win for them. GELP will play against Villa Mitre (#3) and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
A very interesting game took place in Carmen de Patagones. It ended with only one-point defeat on the road of 12th ranked Rivadavia (4-10) to eleventh ranked Atenas (5-9) 75-74 on Saturday evening. Genaro Lorio notched 22 points and 7 assists to lead the effort. Atenas' coach Diego Lifschitz allowed to play the deep bench players in such tough game. Atenas moved-up to tenth place, which they share with San Isidro and CAO Ceres. Rivadavia lost fourth consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with ten games lost. Atenas will have a break next round. Rivadavia will play at home against the league's leader Dep Viedma (#1) having rather not much hope for a victory.

Salta Basket moved-up to fourth place. Olimpico lost fifth consecutive game. They dropped to the tenth position with nine games lost. Salta Basket will face Estudiantes T. (#5) in the next round. Olimpico will play against Riachuelo LR (#14) and hope to win that game.

In the last two games of round 22 Echague defeated Dep Norte in Parana 73-64. Villa S.Martin beat Estudiantes T. at home 71-63.

Dep Norte - Echague 64-73

There was no surprise in Armstrong where 9th ranked Dep Norte (5-5) was defeated by third ranked Echague (12-6) 73-64 on Saturday. Guard Lisandro Ruiz Moreno (185-89) fired 23 points for the winners. Facundo Carulla (193-93) chipped in 12 points and 9 rebounds. Four Echague players scored in double figures. Echague's coach Oscar Bonell used a ten-player rotation which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Celestino Cupulutti (186-93, agency: BIG) produced 19 points and 5 rebounds and forward Lautaro Mare (196-98) added 8 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists respectively for lost side. Echague maintains third position with 12-6 record behind leader Dep Viedma. Dep Norte lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the ninth place with five games lost. Echague will have a break next round. Dep Norte will play on the road against Sp.America (#8) in Rosario and it may be a tough game between close rivals.
