La Liga Argentina Round 23: Barrio Parque defeat Union SF

The fans could enjoy quite many interesting games in the last round. The round ended with loss of the undefeated team, favorites losing the games and games ending by tiny margin. Here is the last round review presented by ESL.

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Union SF (13-5) in Santa Fe on Sunday night. Hosts were defeated by sixth ranked Barrio Parque (10-6) 80-65. It ended at the same time the two-game winning streak of Union SF. Barrio Parque shot the lights out from three sinking 14 long-distance shots on high 56.0 percentage. They looked well-organized offensively handing out 22 assists comparing to just 6 passes made by Union SF's players. Swingman Bernardo Ossela (195-94) orchestrated the victory by scoring 14 points and 8 rebounds. Enzo Rupcic (201-97) contributed with 13 points for the winners. Guard Erbel De Pietro (185-88) answered with 24 points and 5 rebounds for Union SF. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Barrio Parque moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Salta Basket and Estudiantes T. Union SF at the other side dropped to the second position with five games lost. Barrio Parque will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Union SF will play on the road against Sp.America in Rosario and is hoping to win this game.
Very important is a road loss of third ranked Villa Mitre (8-3) against fourth ranked GELP (9-4) on Sunday night. Visiting Villa Mitre was defeated by GELP in a tough game in La Plata 65-73. It ended at the same time the four-game winning streak of Villa Mitre. It was a key game for the second position in the league. It was a great evening for Pablo Alderete (198-93) who led his team to a victory scoring 19 points and 9 rebounds. Juan Wall helped adding 11 points and 7 rebounds. GELP's coach Mauro Tartaglia allowed to play the deep bench players saving starting five for next games. Power forward Ramiro Heinrich (204-87) responded with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds. GELP moved-up to second place. Villa Mitre at the other side dropped to the fourth position with three games lost. GELP will play against Lanus (#5) in Buenos Aires in the next round. Villa Mitre will play on the road against the league's leader Dep Viedma in Rio Negro and hopes to get back on the winning track.
An interesting game was also a 20-point tough road defeat of 5th ranked Progreso in a game in Buenos Aires versus Lanus (#8) 78-58. It was an exceptional evening for Leon Gilmore III who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Carlos Baez came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds for Progreso in the defeat. Progreso's coach rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Lanus (7-7) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Quilmes MP. Loser Progreso dropped to the seventh position with eight games lost. They share it with Sp.America. Lanus will meet at home league's second-placed GELP in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Progreso will play against Atenas (#10) and hope to secure a win.
La Liga Argentina top team - Dep Viedma (11-3) added another victory to their record. This time they beat twelfth ranked Rivadavia (4-11) 70-65. The best player for the winners was Lucas Gonzalez who scored 17 points and 9 rebounds. Dep Viedma maintains first place with 11-3 record. Rivadavia lost fifth consecutive game. They keep the twelfth position with 11 games lost. Dep Viedma's next round opponent will be Villa Mitre (#4) in Bahia Blanca. Rivadavia will play on the road against Lanus (#5) in Buenos Aires and hope to win that game.

Rafael Banegas orchestrated the victory with a double-double by scoring 17 points and 12 rebounds. Salta Basket's coach Jose Luis Pisani tested ten players in this game, but that didn't help. Estudiantes T. moved-up to fourth place, which they share with Barrio Parque and Salta Basket. Estudiantes T. will have a break next round. Salta Basket will play at home against Tiro Federal (#10) and hope to win that game.

There were no big surprises in other games of round 23: Riachuelo LR beat CAO Ceres on the road 75-73. Sp.America destroyed Dep Norte on its own court 93-69. Villa S.Martin managed to outperform Tiro Federal in Resistencia 93-89.



Union SF - Barrio Parque 65-80

There was a small surprise when fourteenth ranked Riachuelo LR (4-13) edged 11th ranked Olimpico (5-10) in Ceres 75-73 on Sunday. Diego Alvarez orchestrated the victory by scoring 20 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. Guard Thiago Dasso (185-0) contributed with 14 points for the winners. Forward Gonzalo Guevara (196-98) answered with 18 points and 9 rebounds and swingman Daniel Tabbia (195-93) added 21 points in the effort for Olimpico. Newly promoted Riachuelo LR maintains fourteenth place with 4-13 record. Olimpico lost sixth consecutive game. They dropped to the twelfth position with ten games lost.

An interesting game was also a 20-point tough road defeat of 5th ranked Progreso in a game in Buenos Aires versus Lanus (#8) 78-58. It was an exceptional evening for American forward Leon Gilmore III (201-95, college: SF Austin) who led the winners with a double-double by scoring 18 points and 11 rebounds. Point guard Lucas Perez (184-87) accounted for 10 points and 8 assists for the winning side. Four Lanus players scored in double figures. Paraguayan center Carlos Baez (202-92) came up with a double-double by scoring 11 points and 10 rebounds and forward Facundo Sanz (197-96, agency: BIG) added 15 points and 7 rebounds respectively for Progreso in the defeat. Progreso's coach rotated ten players seeing no chance for a win. Lanus (7-7) moved-up to fifth place, which they share with Quilmes MP. Point guard Federico De Miguel (176-97) answered with 20 points and guard Jeremias Cardona (188-2) added 17 points in the effort for Dep Norte. The winner was already known earlier in the game, so both coaches allowed to play the bench players saving starting five for next games. Sp.America moved-up to seventh place, which they share with Del Progreso. Dep Norte lost sixth consecutive game. They keep the ninth position with six games lost. Sp.America will face league's second-placed Union SF in Santa Fe in the next round and it will be quite challenging to get another victory. Dep Norte will play on the road against Ameghino (#7) in Villa Maria and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

Villa S.Martin outrebounded Tiro Federal 46-35 including 34 on the defensive glass. Forward Sebastian Picton (197-92) orchestrated the victory by scoring 25 points and 4 steals. Point guard Favio Vieta (188-96) contributed with a double-double by scoring 15 points and 10 rebounds for the winners. Naturalized Italian Juan Kelly (189-88) answered with 21 points and 9 assists and Ivan Antoniuk (202-92) added 16 points and 6 rebounds in the effort for Tiro Federal. Both teams had five players each who scored in double figures. Villa S.Martin have an impressive series of five victories in a row. They keep a position of league leader.
